PALLONE: ANDREWS SIDED WITH REPUBLICANS AGAINST NJ CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

Release Date: May 9 2008

Rep. Frank Pallone: Andrews Sided with Republicans Against New Jersey Children and Families

Throughout his 18-year congressional career, Rep. Rob Andrews has voted with Washington Republicans over the interests of the people of New Jersey.  The pattern began when, trying to curry favor with the Gingrich Republican majority, Andrews voted to cut school meal programs for needy children.  [Star-Ledger 3/28/95]  For this and other votes with the extreme Republicans, the Star Ledger called Andrews a Newt Gingrich "clone."

Andrews was one of only nine House Democrats to stand with Newt Gingrich and the right wing Republicans to vote for legislation to deny school meal programs for children.  Andrews supported cutting not only food programs for students but also getting rid of nutrition programs for pregnant women and infants.  [HR 4, Vote #269, 3/24/95].

"From voting with the Bush Republicans to take us to war in Iraq to voting with the Gingrich Republicans to slash school lunches, Rob Andrews has been on the wrong side for New Jersey," said Rep. Frank Pallone.   Pallone currently chairs the House Subcommittee on Health and was one of 199 Democrats to oppose the legislation to cut the school lunch program that Andrews and the Gingrich Republicans supported.
