NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC Endorses Sen. Lautenberg, Hails Incumbent's Leadership as Guardian of Health and Privacy
Pro-Choice Group Has 25,262 Activists in the Garden State
Washington, DC - Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, announced that her organization's political action committee proudly endorsed Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) for reelection, calling him one of the most vocal and visible champions of choice in the Senate.
"Whenever there's an attack on women's freedom and privacy, New Jersey residents can count on Sen. Lautenberg to stand up and speak out for their state's pro-choice values," Keenan said. "His leadership is even more important in this Senate, where every choice-related vote is close. We are proud to call Sen. Lautenberg a friend--and we will urge our 25,262 member activists in New Jersey to support his reelection and enlist the help of their friends and family to make sure this champion of choice can continue his leadership on critical issues."
Keenan cited Sen. Lautenberg's support of the Freedom of Choice Act and the Prevention First Act -- the pro-choice community's two flagship pieces of legislation -- as well as several examples of his legislative leadership:
* Sen. Lautenberg leads the fight against President Bush's discredited "abstinence-only" policy, and has introduced legislation for the first-ever federal program for honest, realistic sex education. He also coauthored a teen-pregnancy-prevention amendment that would require that all "abstinence-only" programs include medically accurate information, a provision the Bush administration and anti-choice senators oppose.
* As media accounts of pharmacists refusing to fill women's valid prescriptions for birth control were surfacing across the country, Sen. Lautenberg authored legislation to ensure pharmacists fill women's birth-control prescriptions -- without harassment, lectures, or delays.
* When President Bush signed the Federal Abortion Ban into law in 2003, becoming the first president in U.S. history to criminalize abortion care, Sen. Lautenberg took to the Senate floor in protest, and warned women about the growing assault on their right to choose safe, legal abortion.
Keenan also said Sen. Lautenberg is part of her organization's Protect & Elect 2008 electoral program. NARAL Pro-Choice America and its PAC will marshal its resources to protect the pro-choice gains made in 2006 while electing even more pro-choice candidates to the House, the Senate, and the White House.
