LAUTENBERG STATEMENT ON NEW G.I. BILL PASSING SENATE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) issued the following statement upon final passage by both the Senate and House of a new G.I. bill, extending educational benefits to a new generation of veterans:

“We often talk about honoring our veterans and their service.  Now it’s time to show them.  For veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, this bill will help cover the high costs of tuition, housing, books and more.  Helping those who served our country is not just our responsibility, it’s our duty.”

Sen. Lautenberg is one of the four principal sponsors of the new G.I. bill in the Senate, along with Senators Jim Webb (D-VA), Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and John Warner (R-VA).  As part of the Fiscal Year 2008 Emergency Supplemental Bill that passed the Senate last night, the G.I. bill now goes to President Bush for his signature.
