Paul supporters rally in Fort Lee

Led by prospective U.S. Senate candidate Murray Sabrin and roused by Assemblyman Michael Doherty, supporters of presidential candidate U.S. Rep. Ron Paul held what they described as a liberty and freedom rally in Fort Lee today.

"We are overtaxed, the policies of our bi-partisan political elite have weakened the security of our borders, our civil liberties are under attack, and future generations are facing an unprecedented liability of $60 trillion to maintain the welfare state," said Sabrin, a professor of finance at Ramapo College of New Jersey, who ran for governor as a Libertarian in 1997.

Republican Paul has poor numbers in New Jersey. A Quinnipiac University poll this week showed him 2% among likely Republican voters. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani remains the front-runner at 38%, followed by Sen. John McCain at 12%.

But neither the numbers not the cold would deter this mostly young Paul crowd that gathered on the overpass on the Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge and waved banners and American flags at cars passing below.

"I think a lot of young people really identify with Ron Paul because they're afraid of what they're going to be left with," said Jay Carlson of Linden, who was among the 60 Paul activists on Fort Lee's streets.

Held in the town where Washington set up key fortifications during the Revolution, the event dovetailed symbolically with tomorrow's commemoration of the Boston Tea Party when some of the candidate's backers plan to attend Paul events in Philadelphia.

"We're making our political statement that we want liberties and freedom," said organizer Joseph Fisher of Passaic County, "and we believe Ron Paul is the only candidate who's going to give them to us."

Known as Dr. No because of his relentless opposition to pork barrel spending and to measures - such as the Iraq War resolution vote - he deems unconstitutional, Paul has built an impassioned anti-government following.

"He's the best thing that's happened to the Libertarian movement in years," said Bill Shetlick of Flemington.

As they engaged people on the street during their walk from the overpass to Monument Park, some of the supporters drew attention to Paul's policy positions, including abolishing the income tax, and pulling the troops out of Iraq.

"There's one guy running for president who's saying 'wait a minute, we can't keep doing this,'" said Doherty in his keystone remarks to the crowd in Monument Park. "We need to bring our troops back home. We need to get out of Europe. We need to get out of Korea, and bring our troops to defend the borders of the United States."

A former Army captain, Doherty accused Democrats and Republicans within the Washington-Wall Street power structure of trying to maintain an empire.

"One of the problems (with that) is you have a lot of bills," said Doherty. "And what is our government doing to pay those bills?"

The small crowd yelled back, "Raising taxes."

While they know he's a long shot, Paul's supporters today noted that they submitted far more signatures than the 1,000 required by the state Division of Elections in order to get Paul's name on the ballot for the Feb. 5th primary in New Jersey.

The great white hope

One cannot overlook the support he has nationally from anti-semetic fringe groups and until Ron Paul stands up and denounces these elements in his base, he will be nothing more than Philippe Petain.

Our borders, not Iraq's

Doherty and Sabrin correctly point out that our military must first and foremost be used to defend the borders of the United States.  Those of us Republicans who opposed the Iraq War from the start did so with this conviction - long before the illegal immigration debate rose to the top.

"GIULIANI'S GOING TO CREAM YOU!!"

Couldn't have said it better myself.

That Pesky old Constitution again

George is correct as usual here.  Mr Paul seems to be the only politician who acts like a stateman. He seems to be the only one who really cares about  the basics.

After all the open borders policy and the pandering to foreign interests  have ruined both the middle class and the blue collar NON UNION worker in the USA

Giuliani is collapasing

Rudy's candidacy is nowhere.

He'll finish behind Paul in Iowa and behind Paul in New Hampshire.

Where is Rudy going to win? California? NY? NJ? Maybe at best.

The "Crypt Keeper" and his crazy wife and estranged children don't make for a traditional first family.

Demsanddonts

Your analysis is about as inspiring and as enlightening as a Ty-D-Bowl commercial.

A traditional first family? Who detemines that? Your personal attacks against Rudy are beyond shallow. I guess you forgot that Ronald Reagan, the greatest President of the modern era, was divorced and had two children from his previous marriage to Jane Wyman before he became President and to date, is the only President in American history to ever be divorced.

He later married Nancy whom he first met when she contacted him in regards to her name showing up on a communist blacklist when he was President of the Screen Actors Guild. They would later adopt their son Michael.

If Ronald Reagan were running today, you would probably be ripping him to pieces the same way you rip Rudy, especially being that he was a Democrat who switched party affiliation. That definitely would've been the kiss of death for sure in your eyes! I can just imagine all of you Repubes calling him a RINO with an "unconventional family". Oh, and let's not forget that he was the Governor of *gulp* CALIFORNIA!!!

Your irrational buffoonery is comical at best.

Constitution?

Too bad Paul actually wants to change the Constitution by revoking the 14th Amendment. He's against birthright citizenship, so I'd say he's against the Constitution when he doesn't agree with it.

Touchy, touchy Dino!

Let me count the reasons why Rudy has about as much chance as you to be the 2008 GOP nominee:

* How about his acceptance of the Liberal Party nominations for mayor in 1989, 1993 and 1997?

* How about his ill advised endorsement of liberal icon Mario Cuomo for re-election against then Senator George Patacki in 1994?

* How about his lack of foreign policy credentials?

* It's one thing to be divorced ala Reagan, quite another to be married three times and once to your cousin! Pile on top of that his kids can't stand him doesn't make much for a "Kodak moment."

* His relationship with Bernie Kerick, who will be doing some time behind bars.

* His pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage positions fly-in-the-face of most practicing Catholics who see hom out of the mainstream.

Being a RINO in NYC for a generation doesn't work. It didn't work for John Lindsay. It didn't work for Ed Koch. It doesn't work for Rudy.
