Payne Announces Grant for University of Medical and Dentistry of New Jersey

Release Date: Feb 22 2008

Washington, DC – United States Congressman Donald M. Payne today announced that the National Cancer Institute has awarded $181,433 to the University of Medical and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ).

The National Cancer Institute, a division of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, is the federal government’s main agency for cancer research and training.  The Institute supports and coordinates research projects conducted by universities, hospitals, foundations and businesses throughout the US and abroad through research grants and cooperative agreements.  The grant awarded to the University of Medical and Dentistry of New Jersey will be used for chemotherapy research.

“There have been great strides made in the field of cancer detection and treatment,” Congressman Payne stated.  “There has been a steady decline in cancer death rates since the early 1990s – by 18.4% for men and 10.5% for women.  While much progress has been made in this area, there is still important work to be done.  I am very happy that UMDNJ received this funding so it can continue their important work.”
