"Total cost per mile in New Jersey is nearly 19 times the national average"
Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-26) issued the following statement today regarding New Jersey having the highest administrative costs per mile to operate state-controlled roads:
"New Jersey has the highest administrative costs in the nation when it comes to operating state-controlled roads. In a recent issue of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, it is stated that it costs an astounding $68,352 to operate each mile of state controlled road, nearly 19 times the national average.
"This dismal ranking is a prime example of why Governor Corzine’s plan to increase tolls another 800% is wrong and why spending cuts are needed instead. New Jersey needs to become more effective and cost efficient in operating our state run roads and all other state departments and agencies. This will result in less government jobs, fewer government salaries, lower government healthcare and pension payments and most importantly, a decreased tax burden on New Jersey residents.
"I strongly encourage Governor Corzine to seriously examine all state expenditures to help rein in spending rather than propose new ways to increase taxes."
