Burlington County Democratic Chairman Rick Perr called on Burlington County Bridge Commission Chairman John Comegno II to step down today in the wake of his drunk driving arrest Monday night.
“The allegations against Mr. Comegno are extremely troublesome,” said Perr. “Public officials must hold themselves to a higher standard. Mr. Comegno is also a lawyer, and his alleged refusal to submit to a breathalyzer and flight from the accident scene are concerning.”
Perr said that he’s especially troubled that Comegno, a Republican, does work on behalf of the Moorestown Board of Education and could set a bad example for students, especially in light of a recent alcohol-related car accident that killed two kids.
Comegno was appointed to the bridge commission last year. His appointment came after it came to light that lobbyist Robert Stears had overbilled the agency $1 million.
“At its least, Mr. Comegno’s alleged conduct demonstrates the exercise of very poor judgment – a judgment Burlington County cannot rely upon at the helm of an already troubled agency,” said Perr.
A call to Comegno’s law office was not immediately returned.
