Monmouth County GOP Chairman Adam Puharic wants Rudy Giuliani to run against Frank Lautenberg
In the aftermath of news that Anne Evans Estabrook would not run for the U.S. Senate, Monmouth county GOP Chairman Adam Puharic today said he was calling for an emergency meeting of Republican county chairmen to discuss the party’s options in nominating a candidate.
As for his own personal choice for a GOP senate candidate now that Estabrooks is out, Puharic said he would be happy joining a coalition of New Jersey Republicans calling on former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani to enter the race, or "other talented Republicans."
But in the meantime, "Everybody needs to freeze until we have a chance to talk," said Puharic. "If a majority of the county chairs believe we should rally around state Sen. Joe Pennacchio, fine, but if a majority are not happy with the choices they have now, I beseech everyone not to rush to judgement."
Estabrook’s departure for the moment consolidates state Sen. Joe Pennacchio (D-Morris) as the frontrunner in a field that also includes economics Prof. Murray Sabrin.
Puharic said he would be convening a 10 p.m. conference call with the other county chairs to try to reach consensus.
"I’m trying to urge everybody not to make a decision," said Puharic. "This is new ground now, and I’m not convinced that we as of yet have all the candidates we need in making a thoughtful decision about challenging Sen. Frank Lautenberg."

Isn't this the same stunt
Isn't this the same stunt the party chairs pulled in 2001? I was there when Bob Franks held his last "big" campaign rally, in front of Burlington County GOP Headquarters, and maybe thirty people showed up - the day before the gubernatorial primary. Everybody knew his campaign was cobbled together at the last minute after Di Francesco dropped out. Now we are supposed to rally around some candidate who didn't want to be a Senator even yesterday?
NJ Will Probably Be a Red State
if Rudy runs for the US Senate with John McCain as the republican nominee for President.
Well..
almost anyone would be better than Pennachio and Sabrin. Their ambitions won't get them elected.
County reorganizations are this year.
If the Chairs pull these nonsense moves (sounds like Democrat moves), then their jobs will be up for grabs. Committee people voted in conventions. The whole is starting to stink with a suspected TIA. Conservative Republicans can be soreheads about ideological issues. But the blantant rigging of the nomination process will screw the turnout in the General.
add another one to the list.
Looks like we can add Puharic to the list of Republicans that need a replacement.
STOP EMPLOYING DEMOCRAT STRATEGY...
They are the first to say "You need to get behind the winner" if its their candidate, but when its not their candidate, then they pull this kind of crap.
This isn't leadership, this is a joke. And its reasons like this, that allows for the Democrats to whip our behinds time and again.
Pathetic
I have to tell you that if Robert Ortiz pushes for a Rudy candidacy for the NJ Senate seat, I'll beg my local committee person to vote against his re-election as BCRO chair.
Rudy spent his entire career to elected office bashing New Jersey and now Republican County Chairs might want him to represent us in the Senate??? His only connection to the state is that his son went to the same high school as Webber and Baroni. It's enough to make me sick to my stomach.
a change...
of strategy is needed. The county chairs would be direlict in their duty to win elections if they allowed Sabrin or Pennachio to be the nominee. They will both get slaughtered by the dems.
Isn't Puharic resigning in June
I thought Adam "Hatch Act" Puharic was stepping down as Monmouth Republican Chairman in June.
Where does Chairman Hatch Act work now anyway. This guy has had more jobs in the last few years then I can remember.
Dereliction of Duty?
No, The dereliction of duty stems from County Chairs conspiring against two Republicans who are currently in the race. Their job is to get the vote out in their county. Not play shenanigans with games like "who is electable" or "who can beat the incumbent". ANYONE can beat the incumbent if the county chairs just went and did their jobs.
And Yes, Sabrin can win.
I promise you this though, if these county chairs pull this stunt, there will be a mass turnover in republican leadership in the coming years. Many people in the party are completely FED UP with the hanky panky that the select few try to force down the rest of our throats.
Remember, YOU GUYS ARE ELECTED to your positions. Your not a King over a small empire. You are to answer to the requests of your constituents. This isn't American Idol, where we try and throw out the most popular person currently in the party. That strategy has failed us for the past 7 years in New Jersey.
Ron Paul For NJ US Senate
As long as we're playing throw out random names....
Reasons why Sabrin Will Lose in November
1. Sabrin is basing his campaign off of the failed Ron Paul presidential candidacy.
2. Lautenberg beat Sabrin by 15% in the last Rasmussen poll.
3. Sabrin will receive NO SUPPORT from the GOP because Sabrin might as well run as a democrat with his views on the Iraq war.
In response to Eric.,

1.) Sabrin is basing his campaign off of several different events, granted one part of it being the Ron Paul Campaign, but trust me, he has a whole slew of supporters from the last two times he ran for office.
2.) Lautenburg is VERY VULNERABLE and can be easily beaten by Sabrin, Especially after he gets past the primary.
3.) If the GOP is that stupid to refuse to support Murray solely on his views on the war, then I promise several things will happen.
A.) The Republican Party will be forever dead in New Jersey.
B.) There will be a large exodus of supporters flocking to the Democrats in New Jersey, which will ensure that a Republican will never hold a higher office than that of Mayor anywhere.
C.) Everyone of these "official" republicans, whether they be the County Chairs, or State Assembly and Senators, will expose themselves for the hypocrites that they proclaim themselves not to be.
I know its hard for many of the current day Republicans to stomach, but the fact is the face of the party is changing now. You can either do what is right for both the party and the country, or you can forever seal the fate of it in New Jersey, as many will continue to flee to other states where its cheaper to live, taxes are lower, and the Republican Party isn't so arrogant and ignorant of what the constituency wants.
Are you serious?
Are you kidding? Lautenberg will not be easy to beat. He has name recognition and money. Which is why we can't field Sabrin and Pennachio.
Run.....
Dr. Joseph marbach...we have experts on this site, we should use their talents. If not Marbach, Then let's run Ashcroft.
Take Blinders Off
The State and County Chairmen's jobs are to field candidates who can win general elections. The right wing of the Party loves to spew RINO against republicans who aren't socially conservative on all issues. Guess what? Those candidates have ran and lost.
Rudy wanted to be Senator once before but was forced to step-down due to his battle with cancer.
Also, most of the GOP chairs were supporting Rudy for President. So, it's not that big of stretch for them to support a Senatorial candidacy.
Lautenburg will be easier
Lautenburg will be easier than expected.
Murray will traunce him in a debate. Hands Down.
People want Lautenburg out. They think he is too old.
Many Democrats want the chance to run for Senate but know that they cannot compete against the 8 million dollar warchest he proclaims to have.
They will silently support a Sabrin candidacy just to get Lautenburg out of the way, and then come back in 6 years and have their own primaries.
I know a good handful of Dems who are really thinking along these lines. To run against Frank would be a "no-no" in the Democratic Party.
Establishment Republicans are killing GOP here
Can we stop this nonsense? Estabrook pulled Romney the minute she saw that her money will take her nowhere. Giuliani for US Senate in NJ is the dumbest idea I have heard next to the other idea about Giuliani's Police Commissioner for US Senate a couple of years ago. We all know what happened next.
I thought we have a selection process that is working so far. Estabrook dropped out. Jersey Joe and Dr. Sabrin are in. Let's unite behind one feasable candidate and let's be honest about it. That includes Chairman Wilson support of rank-and-file candidate not establishment push-on-us choice, which basically means another failed campaign of Tom Kean Jr. and Forrester.
It's the economy stupid, and finances, stupid, this year. There is only one choice now. Dr. Sabrin is it.
RLC Grass Roots
Lets think about this logically. Why would a Democratc with ambitions for higher elected office support Sabrin instead of Lautenberg? Odds are that Lautenberg will not seek another term because of his age. So why would they help a Republican get elected who will then be able to campaign for reelection as an incumbent when they could simply allow Lautenberg to retire in the Senate and then run in a wide open race.
This senate race will depict the future of the party.
Fact is this.
You have many republicans in New Jersey who are about to pack up and leave. This is their last stand in the state regarding real conservative change.
You have all the major media outlets now discussing and analyzing the coming recession (oh, by the way, the same one that Ron Paul was talking about earlier in the year, but everyone laughed at him for it)
You have Corzine hiking up tolls, State Senators offering themselves pay raises, a "supposed" 10 Million dollar dog park being built new New Brunswick somewhere (I haven't confirmed it, but thats what I have been hearing from people over that way) and we are making plans to support this new paid family leave crap, and "borrow" 25 million from the disability fund, all the while, More Businesses will be forced to flee the state.
Real conservatives are on the ropes, and they are mad as hell that the Republican Leadership DOES NOTHING but spew forth more liberal crap.
The future of the party will be decided this year. The current leadership will either step up to the plate and do what is right, accept the fact that the direction of the party is changing back to its roots, and get behind a proven leader who has the skills to not only bring more of our tax dollars back home, but knows economics and finances very well, OR
They can continue to try and mimic Democrats, and forever doom the future of the party for the next 10 years, as everyone packs their bags and seeks refuge elsewhere in the country, while New Jersey falls off into the economic abyss. (consider that lucky, it could be worse and fall into the ocean)
One thing I have realized about many of my colleagues is that they will sell their beliefs in favor of fortune and fame, and that, my friends says alot about the character of many of these people.
2nd Response to Eric
It works like this..
If Lautenburg Wins, then steps down, someone is appointed to the U.S. Senate seat, and gets a 6 year headstart on fundraising for the next election. (rumor has it Corzine, but many Dems are not happy with him either)
If Murray Wins, it levels the playing field for ALL democrats who would like to run for the seat in 6 years.
A sitting U.S. Senator has no problems fundraising to keep his seat, thats why incumbents tend to be hard to beat, dollar for dollar.
If you think we have problems in our party, trust me, there is a rift starting to develop among the Dems as well.
Those aren't reasons why
Those aren't reasons why Sabrin will lose in November, those are reasons why he will run an unconventional campaign.
1) Sabrin has been distancing himself from Ron Paul and likes to focus more on the issues that conservatives can get behind (anti-tax, fiscal restraint, boarders, abortion, etc etc). Furthermore, we find that candidates like Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, and other mavericks find it much easier to win in State and district elections. Sabrin isn't running for president, he is running for Senator...this allows him to stand more firm on principle. Whatever the rank-and-file may say about Sabrin, few deny that he is the most principled, erudite man running.
2) Polls mean little when name recognition is so slow. Once Sabrin, who is a phenomenal debater, is allowed to debate Lautenberg, people will gravitate toward him. He is not only articulate, but outflanks Lautenberg on the Left on many issues. Why is this not a bad thing? Because he speaks in terms of the Constitution--a document that resonates with the GOP.
3) Sabrin WILL get the support because if it comes down to a pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, anti-tax, limited government conservative and Frank Lautenberg, few will not vote for Murray simply because he wants to talk about bringing some troops home.
Rudy and taxes
Why is it that all the GOP Chairs seem to forget that Rudy went to court to try to keep the NYC commuter tax against NJ residents after it was repealed for New Yorkers - even though it was clearly unstitutional to do so. In fact, instead of accepting the repeal of the commuter tax, he actually wanted to increase the tax on New Jersey residents. Yep, that will go over real well in a New Jersey senate race when the voters focus on it.
John Ashcroft.
He already has ties to NJ..Best friend to our former Morris County Freeholder and Bush Pioneer...none other than: "tadah", CC. Ashcroft will bring waterboarding to the Jersey shore, He's also wealthy...$52 million contract as a monitor. He'll pay his taxes.
Joe Pennacchio
He won 3 counties last week, including a large Union County Convention last Sat. Thats a good week in anyone's book and Bergen county is tommorrow night. He won because Republicans liked his message and he works hard.
He knocked on doors in Union County all week!! When was the last time a US senate candidate did that???
Isn't that good enough? Or you have to be a multi millionare to run?
The Democrats pick candidates by insiders and bosses, are the "wanna be" bosses in the GOP doing the same thing?
I agree with the poster who cited the Reorganization this year.
Any County chairman who interferes with the selection process should be booted.
Anyone who jumps in now is pure and simply an opportunist. You put your name in to run because you wanted to run in the beggining like these guys did. Sorry For Ann's health problems, but her candidacy was going no where. Union County proved that. She had the leadership all locked up and Mike Ferguson, but the rank file decided that contest.
Bottom line is, Senator Pennacchio if given half a chance by the Country club is a hard working and presentable candidate who will raise money.
Its only the first week of March!!
Lets wake up and stop being stupid and get down to the hard work , thats how you win!
PC517 and I agree its time
PC517 and I agree its time to get down to the nitty gritty. We just don't agree on who the better candidate is.
Sabrin
As far as the Sabrin and Pennacchio are concerned, I'll ultimately vote for either of them in a general election over Lautenberg.
I will, barring something crazy happening, vote for Sabrin in the primary. However, Sabrin's campaign cannot go around pulling stunts like asking the state GOP Chairman to resign. Unacceptable behavior for someone who is seeking office.
Nonetheless, Sabrin's background as a businessman and an economist make him the most appealing option to place in the Senate in a time of economic trouble. He is a true Conservative, but he is one who's message can resonate to the other side of the aisle (which is the only way that a conservative will ever win in NJ).
If the GOP is desperate for another Senate candidate, however, they shouldn't be begging for a carpetbagger, but should look in-state to another man who understands the economy: Steve Forbes. It would take a LOT of begging to drag him into the election, but he would be a slam-dunk for the nomination, and a strong candidate in the general election as well.
Bottom Line
The petition filing deadline isn't until April 7th (I'm pretty sure on that) so anyone can jump in and easily get the required signatures to be on the ballot. So the fact that some Chairs and others are open to anyone else entering the race is fine, because it would be legally fine and it is democratic since we aren't pulling a Torricelli-Lautenberg switch here.
The counties where Pennacchio already is on the line should remain, the counties where Estabrook was on the line are free to do whatever they want, and the one's coming up can do so as well.
This isn't anything against the current candidates, it's how I believe this race should go from here. If someone should enter now that's their choice and if they start winning lines and conventions that's fair, as long as Pennacchio gets to keep those he already won which is just Union and Hunterdon I believe.
WTG PC517!
I agree with everything you've said except for one thing. . . the Democrats don't choose candidates - they are told who their candidate is. From Lautenberg running for the Torch to McGreevey resigning on a date that forced "Governor" Codey on us to Corzine buying the Senate & Gubernatorial nomination, Dem's haven't chosen a candidate in a statewide primary in many years.
And that's a disgrace that mocks the Democratic process.
Godspeed, Joe Pennaccio!

Election Law Reality
New Jersey election law requires candidates to be residents at least 1 year prior to election day. Perhaps people should consider the law before they call for someone to be a candidate, otherwise they could look foolish.
actually...
Article I Section 3 of the US Constitution...
"No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of 30 years, and been nine years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, WHEN ELECTED [emphasis added], be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen."
Since this is the supreme law of the land, it would be interesting to see if a State Law could create additional requirements for a Federal office...I would think it could not.
A Great Choice!
If this is doable, I say absolutely!! Who cares if Rudy isn't from New Jersey? Neither is Senator Prune Juice. For all we know, they may very well be next door neighbors!
Murray Sabrin has turned me off completely with his saber rattling and "Jersey Joe" Pennacchio is a hack who cares about nothing but his own personal ambitions which he made clear when he shamelessly atttacked Tom Kean Jr. in '06 in a shallow attempt to grab a piece of the spotlight for himself. Who cares if we got stuck with Bob Menendez, just as long as "Jersey Joe" sees fit to make a statement for '08?
If the rules have to be bent, that's fine with me. If the rules can be bent in favor of Senator Prune Juice, they can also be bent against him as well.
"Liberals are people who will believe anything...twice."- William F. Buckley
Two things matter to me in
Two things matter to me in this election:
1. Getting NJ's financial house in order - I wasn't in favor of Corzine's toll plan, or the rumblings about selling assets, but at least he was acknowledging that there was an issue. That Sabrin is focused towards financial elements is very attractive to me. Pennaccio touts his support of lowering sales tax, etc., but I see no specifics given about how to cut spending. Corzine's proposed budget cuts are a step in the right direction, but some attention to the corrupted system is in order.
2. Cleaning up said corruption in NJ politics - and that goes for BOTH parties. Kudos to Sabrin for bringing this issue to the forefront as well. I have to question the idea of first touting Estabrook as a candidate and now Giuliani?? Giuliani has an ethical record that I would be kind to call, "tarnished". Do we really need more of this in NJ politics??
Dino..
I was aware that Pennacchio was thinking about challenging Kean Jr., but how exactly did he attack him? I don't remember reading anything about that then.
Oh and to the last commenter, both of those are state issues, not federal.
Yes, they are state issues,
Yes, they are state issues, which is why I am supportive of Sabrin challenging the GOP establishment and setting up to run candidates at every level in the state.
There is a growing number of people in NJ who are mad as h-ll and aren't going to take it anymore, and any candidate or party can ignore this faction at their peril.
Sabrin is attempting to tap this vein, and set these people up as direct challengers to the status quo in NJ politics, and I applaud that.
backwardsjersey
I was aware that Pennacchio was thinking about challenging Kean Jr., but how exactly did he attack him?
Pennacchio criticized him for the "Soprano" style ad that ran against Bob Menendez insinuating that Sen. Kean insulted Italian Americans which was absolutely not true.
Sen. Kean did not have anything to do with the running of that ad and had absolutely no control over the group that ran it. That didn't matter to Pennacchio though who knew the truth but didn't care. He allowed himself to be a tool for Menendez and followed his lead in order to pander for votes for two years down the road.
I kept silent on my opinion of Pennacchio for a while but I simply can't anymore. While I would vote for him against Senator Prune Juice, I really don't care for him at all.
Tom Kean Jr. was our best chance at winning a seante seat in years and while Kean shoulders a lot of blame himself for his failing campaign, "friends" like Pennacchio, who have a zero chance, didn't help matters much.
"Liberals are people who will believe anything...twice."- William F. Buckley
Stick with Pennacchio!
If Tom Wilson allows this BS to happen, he should be given the boot.
Pennacchio won the Union County GOP convention (where Estabrook was the favorite) with his speech. While Anne said most of the right things, her delivery was weak. Then Jersey Joe got up and hit a home run. Many of the delegates made up their minds at that moment, including me. This guy has the fire needed to beat Lautenberg. Instead of trying to pull a page from the Dem handbook with another 'switcheroo' (like the one that got us Lautenberg again), let's stick with the best candidate who has been up for this race from day one. I firmly believe Pennachio would have won this primary over Estabrook anyway. So, why try to change now?
The soon to be former County Chair from Monmouth should try to do his job instead of just fishing for headlines.
Stick with Pennacchio
Yeah, do that. And make sure you alienate the %85 of Republicans for yet another year as the "liberal establishment" of Ego-maniacal personas continue to make themselves feel important.
I applaud Sabrin for having enough balls to go straight to the root of the problem itself, which is a failed leadership in the party on multiple levels.
As for you "Rudy" lovers, amazing how everyone was upset when Hillary Clinton went Carpet Bagging to New York to be their Senator. Now, apparently its ok because its another pro-war, anti-civil rights establishment Republican?
Yeah, The party is definitely very ill and dying a slow death. Amazing how the "liberal establishment" is running scared, sending their thought police all over the internet and the press now, trying to minimalize Sabrin's presence.
Someone quick, buy a graveplot, because if Sabrin doesn't succeed, there will have to be a mass burial of conservative ideals, all the while those who are left standing, will start fleeing the state on the coat tails of industry, which as I understand, are already making the same plans.
Then the rest of you can enjoy your Welfare State Paradise.
RLC
You continue to insist Sen. Pennacchio is "liberal", but can you provide one example of how he is a "liberal"?
Guess the quote...
''No matter what the Supreme Court does -- and I have great respect for the Supreme Court, and this ends it as a matter of law -- they're still not going to convince me that my grandfather, when he was sitting in Italy, thinking of coming to the United States, and on the shores getting ready to get on that ship in Genoa, was saying to himself, 'I'm coming to New Jersey,' ''
Senate race
Knowing this state and it's Band of Pathetic Voters, Ron "Wack Job" Paul would fit right in with all of you NJ Voting Morons..........and WIN!!!!!!!!!!
