Quinnipiac: Corzine approvals continue to slip

Gov. Jon Corzine's job approval ratings continue to go down and voters are split, 44%-43%, on whether he should be re-elected in 2009, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released this morning. Corzine has a 46%-43% approval rating, down from 49%-40% in September, and 48%-39% in July. Among New Jersey voters, 41% say they would vote for Corzine, and 31% say they would back an unnamed Republican candidate.

“Midway in his first term, voters are lukewarm about Gov. Jon Corzine and give his performance a mediocre rating. Most just think things have stayed about the same since he took over in Trenton,” said Clay Richards, the Assistant Director of the Quinnipiac polling institute.

Voters in New Jersey oppose the elimination of the death penalty by a 53%-39% margin, but prefer life without parole rather than the death penalty for people convicted of first-degree murder by a 52%-39% margin.

And by a 59%-29% margin, voters oppose the sale or lease of the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway as a way of reducing the state’s debt and possibly funding tax relief. By a 74%-24% margin, New Jerseyans oppose a gas tax increase to finance road and mass transit improvements.

“Without knowing the details of the Governor’s plan to pay off the state debt, voters oppose 55 – 41 percent any plan that involves doubling tolls on the New Jersey Turnpike or Garden State Parkway. And they reject 3 - 1 any alternative that involves a gas tax hike. But if forced to pick, they would prefer almost 4 - 1 paying higher tolls than paying more for gas," Richards said.

Death Penalty

I guess this is why the vote on the death penalty was done during the lame duck session. Every legislator who voted for it should be ashamed of themselves.

Death Penalty

I am actually proud of the vote on the Death Penalty. The Death Penalty is an ancient form of revenge...it is not justice.  The mark of a civilized society is the belief in justice. Revenge no matter who issues the verdict is cruel and unusual...what might I ask is more cruel than death?  Of course some of you are going to completely disagree with me. I respect that, I simply cannot ever justify the taking of a human life, no matter how wreched that life may be. I do not have that kind of right and neither to men and women serving on juries or on benches.  Furthermore, it costs more moeny to execute someone that it does to put them in prison for life.

SJBlue can bring the coffee and donuts

to the next Right to Life meeting, then.  I can't wait to see him and discuss our shared belief that there is never a justification for taking any human life - prenatal or postpartum.

Corzine's liberal implosion.

Is anyone shocked this clown is sinking like a rock?

What happen to property tax relief?

Nothing.

Now he wants to kill a capital punishment bill that is rarely used. I'm sure the parents of Megan Kanka will be proud of the idiots in in the senate who voted to commute life sentences to a bunch of hardened criminals who have nothing to lose and will now be free to kill prison guards and other inmates free of retribution or the death penalty!

How about his sordid relationship with that union hack Katz?

Will we ever know how much he gave her? That's been swept under the rug.

What about this phony tax break bill concocted by the likes of Sarlo who barely escaped getting re-elected?

This guy makes Florio look like Washington.

If the Republicans can't be Corzine, they just can't win and the people of this state deserve what they get.

You got me.

I agree with you, I abhor abortion. I find it disturbing that people could be so cavalier about their bodies and their health. I'm not in the minority, just about everyone hates abortion.  However, I disagree that fetuses are human beings until they could survive outside of the mother's whomb. I am not a physician and I do not pretend to know when that is, but I agree that partial birth abortion (except in certain extreme circumstances) should be illegal. Since a fetus cannot exist outside of its mother's whomb the only "thing" that gives that fetus "life" is the argument that it has a soul. I personally believe that life begins at conception, but I cant press those beliefs on others. Thus, as soon as we can scientifically prove the existance of a soul I will remain pro-choice. Furthermore, I am not a woman and make no pretenses that I am able to judge what it is like to be pregnant or what it is like to be a woman. I support every woman's right to make her own choice.  So yes I am pro-choice and against the dealth penalty.

The dems in the

state house can put stem cells and "tax breaks" on the ballot for public vote but they decide to tackle the death penalty in lame duck.  This makes me sick!

Corzine (SJRED)

Gee, that argument sounds like the one that Pilate tried on Jesus Christ when he sent him to the cross.............

I wash my hands..... "I'm pro-choice”

Some how I don't think that's going to work either.

What a copout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
