Nearly 60% of New Jersey voters say that 84-year-old Frank Lautenberg is “too old to effectively serve another six-year term in the U.S. Senate,” according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released this morning. Lautenberg has a 39%-31% job approval rating, but 40% of voters think he does not deserve re-election; 32% say he should return to the Senate.
“Senator Lautenberg, who faces re-election this year, leads an unnamed Republican challenger 37 – 30 percent. But the number of voters who think he is too old to run again has risen four points to 58 percent, and the number of voters who think he deserves re-election has dropped four points to 32 percent. Lautenberg could be in trouble if the Republicans field a serious challenger,” said Clay Richards, the Assistant Director of the Quinnipiac polling institute.

And yet, he'll still end up
And yet, he'll still end up winning anyway.

Too Old? Don't Count Your Dentures Just Yet
I remember listening to Lautenberg speak at Boys State at Rider University in 1994 and he still had enough fire in the belly to scream at a 17-year old delegate asking him a question we couldn't hear (but obviously upset him). It is probably not a wise idea to piss off the young people most likely to vote (and run campaigns) in near future. Too bad YouTube wasn't around back then - I would have loved to post that video.
The Dems can stick a rutabaga on the ballot and he/she will still get 45% of the vote. Lautenberg survived reelection in the Republican landslide of 1994, why not give old blue hair another chance to pad his pension? He'll still win.
Only life worth living is a youthful one
Ageism rears its ugly head once again in the Democratic Party. Absent some universal healthcare mandate which prescribes morphine drips into oblivion for anyone over the age of 75 for whatever ails them, the next best thing the party platform embraces is pullng the plug on their careers. Step aside old man, your shuffle is halting the march of progressives who only measure the value of life by the level of taxes it can shoulder between the ages of 16 and 70.
This year GOP will have formidable candidate Dr. Sabrin
This is the only chance that GOP will have this year. Fiscal and economic matters will be on voters minds this year. Dr. Sabrin certainly is an expert in these fields, far more knowlegeable than Lautenberg. All GOP needs to do is to get behind Sabrin.
Sabrin for Senate
It seems clear that the only Republican candidate who stands a chance of beating Lautenberg is Murray Sabrin. Could you imagine the Republican outfranking Lautenberg on the left? Sabrin opposes the PATRIOT Act, the War in Iraq, along with the absurd drug war. His message of freedom and personal liberty will resonate with NJ voters.
If nominated, Sabrin will be able to debate Lautenberg and show the people of NJ what it means to be consistently pro-liberty.
Of course he's too old!
He's going to be 90 if he's re-elected. He's a hypocrite who questioned Fenwick's age some 26 years ago when he was 58!
Fossil Frank is getting what he deserves. If he really cared about the state, he would retire and let someone younger and more able to serve the state.
He's just a pig who doesn't want to leave office. It's all about him, not the voter.
He's lucky the Republicans are so stupid and incompetent they can't mount a serious effort to defeat him.
Dont bet on it Demsanddonts
I agree with others here that Sabrin's new kind of Republicanism can easily defeat a flailing Lautenberg. No one is letting this slip away.
A great man, but his time is up to be a great politician!/!/!/!/
Lautenberg needs to realize his time is up. It is really sad when people will not just give up. This man (pointing out demsanddonts) is afraid he will have nothing left if he leaves and probably believes that it makes hime feel younger. I mean the man is 84, and not that age should matter, but we have seen that his choices have lessened the good of New Jersey over the years. The man is a great man, but his time is up to be a great politician. He is being selfish not to let others who can now do better take their turn. THe man had his chance and did a fine job...but quit while your a head. It is an embarrassment to the state and should be an embarrassment to him. He going to weaken New Jersey, because even if he wins (which we might be looking at Republicans taking the seat for a while), he will win by little. Meaning there is not as many supporters behind him and feuds will erupt.
Who knows, maybe he thinks he still hasn't proven anything yet..which is pretty sad>.!.!.!.!!!!!
Frank Lautenberg Has More "Marbles" Left Over Than...
......most of his critics ever started with.
Barring death or disability; the seat is his for another term.
Ask Senator Byrd if 84 is too old. :-)
From Frederick Douglass
Is Byrd still a member of the KKK?
I'm sure Frederick Douglas is spinning in his grave.
Typical liberal. All emotion, no intellect.
GOP bad, Dems good.
Pathetic.
