Riley leaves job, as planned, say Democrats

Eighth district Republicans got Constitutionally banged up when they tried to confront the Democrats over the issue of Tracy Riley’s husband representing a man charged in a terror plot. But now the GOP is crowing over Riley’s departure from her job as a clerk and office manager at her husband's law firm to focus on her campaign for the Assembly.

Riley announced today that she is leaving the firm, and Republicans say it’s because she can’t bear the association.

"She must have been hearing it during her travels on the campaign trail," said Burlington County Republican Spokesman Chris Russell.

Riley counters no way, she had already postponed taking the bar exam so she could "devote more time listening to and speaking with the taxpayers of Burlington County."

"She’s been planning to do this all along after Labor Day as the campaign intensifies," said Democratic Campaign Spokesman Peter Clerkin. "She’s putting her career on hold to focus exclusively on the campaign."

In the summer, GOP mayors of towns bordering Fort Dix had protested Michael Riley’s legal representation of Shain Duka, one of six men arrested and charged on May 7th with plotting to attack the military base. Riley’s opponents essentially signed off on the mayors’ concerns.

But critics of the mayors responded that the U.S. Constitution is no small document, and that it guarantees the rights of the accused to representation in a court of law. Still, the Republicans insisted, the fact that Riley’s husband would represent a man suspected of wanting do damage to the base raises the patriotism question down here.  Now, Republicans argue, Riley is acknowledging as much.

"It crosses an ethical line for him to represent a guy going onto a base to shoot up a bunch of soldiers," said Russell. "She’s tried to create a space between herself and her husband."

"What more do they want?" said Clerkin. "Do they want her to divorce her husband?"

Riley, a domestic violence victim who said she worked her way through law school in order to provide legal assistance to victims of domestic violence, said she will complete the last stages of her legal training at a future date.

"I am focusing my complete attention on this campaign, which I entered because of what I believe is a leadership vacuum in meeting the needs of the hardworking people of Burlington County," Riley said in a press release. "In public service, people come first. Making government more accountable and eliminating waste in Trenton to lower our property taxes is far more important to me than pursuing my legal career at this time."

Clerkin said his candidate was not involved in the Duka case.

Riley is running on a ticket with Assemblyman Francis Bodine (the senate candidate) and Chris Fifis, against a GOP ticket comprised of Phil Haines (the senate candidate) and Dawn Marie Addiego and Scott Rudder.

More Garbage

Its all BS really, poor little Tracy knows she has a problem and with less than 2 months before the election, she is desperately trying to make herself the good guy, but it is waaaaaaaaaaay too late! Sorry Tracy, you lose

Polls are in!

Sounds to me like the GOP had more of an issue than the Dems let on.

I think Torricelli put it best when he stated; "When did we become such an unforgiving people?"

Poor Tracy don't let those illegal alien and terrorist haters get you down!

09/04/07 8:14 pm

Not such a blonde after all?

She did just take away the Republican's best argument against her candidacy, even if her decision was the result of political pressure.

09/04/07 8:57 pm

Yep

There is absolutely no way the Republicans can use this issue now. I mean after all, there are no press reports or photographs to use in mailers.

And I am certain she no longer shares a checking account with her husbands who cashes in the checks from the defense of the Ft. Dix Six.

Yep. This issue is over now. Guess we should just focus on the very competitive Senate race.

I hear Bodine's pension reform platform is taking off - he gives back $500K of taxpayer money that he collected from the pension loophole lawmakers gave themselves and he'll promise never to do it again - or he'll quite his job and hopes no one notices (high-five to Tracy for that idea).

Argument Still Valid

The fact IMHO that she waited so long to do this combined with her contradicting everything she said months ago still is a very valid argument for the GOP. You know, like old Flipper John Kerry! Tracy cannot have it both ways; timing is everything and yet she will share in any $$$ that is made by this case. The better form of valor would have been to go to the judge and defer the case to someone else and YES it does happen!

Looking for Substance in a Haystack

First, if one is against pension padding, then Vince Farias, not Fran Bodine, is the person that should be of focus.

Secondly, some Republicans on this board, but particularly the substance-less campaigns of Addiego, Haines, Rudder, need to go back and read the Constitution and realize that all individuals are entitled to representation under the law. One wonders why this campaign distraction is being brought up by the Republican candidates but then...

Beneath this empty veneer of political posturing and misplaced jingoism, Riley and Fifis have completely wedged the Republican ticket into a wall: The Republicans in the 8th refuse to sign onto a ban on pay-to-play. The reason would be that PaineWebber, Nykita, the Capehart firm, and other contract-receiving companies wouldn't be able to contribute to the BurlCo Republicans -- and Addiego et al wouldn't reap the rewards.

(And backwardsnj: how many posts do you make in any Baroni or Coniglio thread, my friend?)

09/04/07 10:28 pm

Answer

A million and one Martin..a million and one.

But at least I put substance in my posts in those threads..

Not saying you don't

Maybe someone else doesn't...

Kid gloves?

Oy vey... Since when has the Sixth Amendment devolved into an expression of coddling? Why do conservatives detest the Constitution so...these are /rights/, NOT privileges, no matter who the /person/ (yes, remember that pesky Fourteenth while you're at it) as well. Remember, the Constitution does not only confer its privileges and immunities on those who pass the Helen Chenoweth Memorial Demographic Examination (HCMDE).

09/05/07 8:48 am

I'm sorry...

I was using a GOP tactic there...:)

Yeah...ain't it pesky that the Constitution protects all people and not just Republicans...

and Gopgal...I doubt Will Ferrell would be pleased by your use of his image...

09/05/07 9:58 am

And?

And I guess myself and others do not have the right to be safe from being blown up??? Look at the terror plan thwarted in Germany today, more animal terrorists were planning to hit US airbases in the next few days! Sorry, I stand by my posts and I do believe that will ferrell would agree with me that he and his children would want to be safe from being blown up too.

It's about protecting someone's right to counsel...

not protecting their right to blow things up. Jeez...you have a thick skull. Until someone is convicted they have a right to an attorney and to a vigorous defense. That's what makes our justice system better than oh say...China.

It's people like you that convicted Richard Jewell and threw away the key before a trial (which of course never happened). Once they are convicted, screw em, then they are terrorists, until then they have a right to a defense and that is what Riley's firm was providing.

And I was referring to you as GOPGal using the image of Ferrell, a well known Dem....and for that matter I am surprised that Hogans_Heroes, a poster with a seemingly conservative bent, would use the image of a well known amateur pornographer.

09/05/07 1:08 pm

And if you want to be technical...

the Supreme Court has decided, in Miranda v. Arizona, that the 5th amendment does give a person the right to an attorney. I don't think it has ever debated "the right to be safe from being blown up" although I am not a legal scholar so excuse me if I am wrong.  If it was the government doing the blowing up, then the whole deprevation of life liberty and property without due process in the 5th amendment might apply.

09/05/07 1:11 pm

Lololol

It must be so nice being holier than thou, but it is painfully obvious you have no family member in the military or lost someone to terrorism. I understand your ignorance. With that being said, in a contentious political election, it would have been better had Riley been honest from the get go and her husband defer the case to another attorney, it happens every day. But the point is not about defending those animals especially those illegally here in this country (which unfortunately we also have to pay for) it is about a woman who is so desperate to get her way that she has never even acknowledged the feelings of those residents who were in harms way. Oh, and the next time you talk to Will, let me know I am using his avatar! I didnt know I could not use a Dems picture - asshole.

Oooh...hit a soft spot.

Such a potty mouth. Calling me that term when you have been the leader of the nasty brigade against martin. You can say that Martin is a little verbose but he never has stooped to using profanity like you. That's the last bastion of a person with a small vocabulary. And I didn't know that standing up for the constitution was suddenly being "holier than thou". I believe the constitution is what those who serve in our military take an oath to defend.

09/05/07 1:16 pm

They only like certain parts of the Constitution...

Pennquaker:  Like the part that they interpret to say that they can own a bazooka...

Way off Base

ebmd, you are totally off base and you are missing the point of this thread. You are conveniently ignoring the facts at hand, and from reading your posts, I can see why. I wonder where it says in the Constitution itself protection of those illegaly entering our country and with intent to harm us. You can spin it anyway you want to ebmd, but you are far from sitting in judgement and obviously have your own issues to deal with. Again, the point of this thread was to dechipher why Tracy Riley is conveniently dropping her "job" less than two months before a major election. It is not going to help her in any way because I do agree with previous posters, it is a little too late. Her firm will be representing Duka and whatever happens, she and her family will be making money off of this case and that is what is distasteful to many people. Yes, Duka has the right to a defense, but the Rileys should have known this would come back to bite them in the behind. Many people I have spoken to understand that this Duka is entitled to a defense, but they are not happy that the Candidate for the Assembly's family owned business is representing him. The fact she is quitting is nothing more than a political ploy to garner sympathy and to try to run away from the facts at hand. Also, ebmd, who gives a crap what avatars people use? Are you truly that bitter and unhappy a person that your posts can only pick on that? Get over yourself.

09/05/07 1:45 pm

Bottom Line

I think the bottom line is that the 8th district Republicans are idiots for even making this an issue. Shouldn't make too big of a difference because they might pull off the win anyway, but it definately didn't help them. Stay on message: Taxes, Overspending, Budget, Asset Monetization, Bodine's Corruption.

Then again the GOP in this state being idiots is nothing new. A monkey can run the organization better than it's been ran as of late. The Republicans that stand on their own two feet and go out there and work hard and deliver a logical positive message mixed in with a negative or two are always the one's that win.

When will the state GOP learn that?

09/05/07 1:50 pm

Intent to harm doesn't make a difference.

The constitution, and the 14th amendment specifically, requires the states to provide equal protection under the law to all persons (not only to citizens) within their jurisdictions.  It says nothing to a persons intent.  If it did, who would be the arbiter of such intent.  I know plenty of lawyers who represent people they don't like.  They do it because as an officer of the court they take an pledge that in it says:

...I will strive as best I can.. To be at all times, even at personal sacrifice, a champion of due process, in court or not, for all persons, whether they be powerful or envied, or are my neighbors, or be among the helpless, hated, or oppressed;

I would say that at this point Duka falls under the hated category.

Believe me, I don't support terrorists, but I do support the Constitution and the rights it gives people.  I would be very leery to enter a country that would not afford me, as a non-citizen, the same rights.

I am not bitter.  Just being sarcastic.  Do you actually think I think that Will Ferrell cares about some woman who posts on a NJPolitics Blog??

09/05/07 2:10 pm

Yeah you do

you do care about gopgals avatar or why would you make an issue of it?? YOU said it not her or anyone else. I do agree with you about what the constitution says, however, it does not mean that people are going to be happy about it. I will say it again and again, Tracy does not care about anyone but tracy and if she really had any sensitivity, she would have come out months ago letting people know where she stood and what plans she has to keep people safe, but she did not and now she is trying to run away from it. The Mayors did a stupid thing without really thinking it through, however, from what I hear the residnets of those towns are solidly behind the GOP because they like being safe and so far the GOP have the plan to do so.

09/05/07 7:26 pm

I don't know Tracy...

and I don't live in that district so I was mainly dealing with the constitutional issues in abstract terms. Anyone who thinks the GOP knows what's best about keeping us safe needs to look at the President's plan regarding those Mexican trucks. That's about the worst thing in terms of keeping us safe. Any Republican (or Democrat for that matter) who does not oppose that can never say anything about "keeping us safe".

09/06/07 3:29 pm

Bottom Line

Haines beats Fran "Pine Valley" Bodine by a LANDSLIDE. Addiego & Rudder ride his coat tails to victory.

EVERY Labor Organization has endorsed Haines, welcome to retirement Franny Boy!
