Despite all the hype about his fundraising prowess, Rotarian American congressional candidate Paul Stuart Aronsohn has just $92,342 in the bank as he seeks to oust two-term Republican Ernest Scott Garrett in the predominately Republican fifth district. Aronsohn has just slightly more than the $74,859 2004 warchest (as of 6/30/04) of the 2004 Democratic candidate, Dorothea Anne Wolfe, and substantially less than Garrett's '02 rival, Anne Ricks Sumers, who had $442,815 in the bank at the same point. Aronsohn, a former spokesman for Governor James E. McGreevey, was able to push Wolfe out of the race earlier this year because he assured Democrats he could raise enough money to wage a strong challenge to Garrett -- but he now has about six times less money than Democrat Linda Stender, who is running against Republican Congressman Michael Ferguson in the adjoining seventh district.
One of the legendary scams in Bergen County politics came in 1984, when Republicans were considering candidates to take on newly-elected Democratic Congressman Robert Torricelli. Torricelli had won the seat two years earlier, when he ousted three-term GOP incumbent Harold Hollenbeck by a 53%-46% margin. The political climate in 1982 (and congressional redistricting in the 9th) favored Democrats and Torricelli leveraged the national contacts he made working for Vice President Walter Mondale and running Jimmy Carter's 1980 re-election campaign in Illinois to help him raise $266,000 -- about $70,000 more than Hollenbeck had.
Ronald Reagan's popularity heading into the 1984 election, and a new congressional map (the '82 redistricting plan was tossed by federal judges), gave Republicans reason to believe Torricelli could be beaten. The 9th district went strongly for Reagan, giving him a 59%-41% win over Mondale -- a plurality of almost 47,000 votes.
Party leaders had several attractive candidates, including newly-elected Assemblyman William "Pat" Schuber and Bergen County Sheriff William McDowell, but decided to go with a unknown insider, Neil Romano, who had served as Executive Director of the New Jersey Republican State Committee in the late 1970's. Romano appeared before the Bergen GOP screening committee and sold them on his ability to raise money -- saying that wealthy family members and politically connected friends would provide him with a hefty campaign warchest -- the type of money a challenger would need to take on Torricelli.
The problem for the Bergen GOP is that they were scammed. Romano had practically no capacity to raise money and the personal wealth he pledged just wasn't there. The lethargic Romano raised just $89,166 -- giving Torricelli an almost 6-1 edge in fundraising. Torricelli won a second term with 63% of the vote, with Romano running more than 60,000 votes behind the top of the ticket.

too bad....not that I think the district is winnable for a D, I just think that a nice, moderate D with some bucks could keep it respectable.

With that being said, there were also Republicans in Hudson County in 1984 AND '85 who successfully capitalized on the popularity of President Reagan and Gov. Kean.
Every Hudson Republican candidate was successful except Albio Sires who switched from Democrat to Republican and claimed to "find his political concience" and soon after, got trounced by popular incumbent Democrat Congressman Frank Guarini. He than lost his political concience for good when he became an independent and then finally re-registered as a Democrat.(Although he did cross party lines to endorse Christie Whitman in '97.)
You just can't make this stuff up folks!

Wally's personal vendetta against Aronsohn is clouding some of the comparisons he makes in this post.
1) While it may be true that Aronsohn has "just slightly more" than Wolfe had at this point in 04, he also has raised $200,000 more than she had at this point. The Aronsohn campaign is obviously campaigning aggressively and spending money early to shift the polling numbers in their favor.
2) Comparing this race to the Ferguson/Stender race is silly as both candidates in that race have much more money than their counterparts in the 5th.
3) No mention of Scott Garrett raising significantly less than he was able to in 2004... If he's so safe, why would he need the support of the NRCC and Cheney?

Paul Aronsohn is a joke. Garrett is certainly beatable but why can't we get someone to run who can win? Putting aside that he has no personality and nothing meaningful to say, exactly how does he spin the fact that he was the mouthpiece for all of McGreedy's lies and sleaze? He makes Mike Schneider look like a winner.

I really don't think having a handful of "moderate GOP" Bergen County towns makes a Democrat competitive in this district. Even if Garrett was somewhat vulnerable, being this closely tied to the McGreevey administration is certainly no asset for Aronsohn.
Earth to Arohnson, why are you running? You cannot win. Period.
Earth to Arohnson, why are you running?
You cannot win. Period. End of story.
Your candidacy only motivates Garrett to campaign that much harder. It only assists Caliguire in Districts 39 & 40 in terms of pulling Republicans and conservatives to the polls.
Your candidacy only helps Tom Kean defeat Robert Menendez by an even wider margin in Bergen County. Your candidacy helps down ballot Republicans for freeholder and surrogate.
The Arohnson oddysey is unrealistic, politically damaging to other Democrats and serves no practical purpose.
Why is he running? I'll tell you why. Because it's all about him
Why is he running? I'll tell you why. Because it's all about him. He only moved to Ridgewood recently when he devised the demented idea to run. And where was he for all those years when other candidates in the 5th were running--did he ever offer support, contribute in any way? Of course not. Now he will run, get his doors blown off, and then all of his supposed commitmment to the district will dissipate never to be heard from again. If you don't believe me, call him for help during the second week of November after he gets less than twenty percent of the vote.
I agree completely with the last comment. I don't have a problem with you making a fool out of yourself; actually, I find it entertaining. But what is disturbing is that your egocentric, self-serving campaign is hurting other Dem. candidates that we actually would like to see win.
