Saxton will not seek another term

Citing health concerns, U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton announced today that he will not seek a 13th term in office.

"Although I had intended to run in 2008 and was planning a strong campaign, developments which occurred earlier this year regarding my health have prompted me to make this decision," read a statement issued by Saxton.

Saxton, 64, has been treated for prostate cancer and chronic sciatica, a back and leg condition, according to the statement. He has served in Congress since 1984, and first entered public office as a state Assemblyman in 1975. The announcement comes one year before Saxton, who has never lost an election, was to face what would likely be the hardest battle of his congressional career.

"I will continue to receive medical treatment, and my health care providers have indicated the prognosis is, in fact, very positive," said Saxton. "…I have always done my best to serve the diverse Third District. When making tough decisions, I have honestly weighed the pros and cons at hand, and when possible, compromised and worked with Republicans and Democrats for the greater good."

Saxton was expected to face a tough fight against Democrat John Adler, the Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman, in a district that narrowly favors Republicans. Adler was tapped by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who see the seat as potentially vulnerable.

Republican State Committee Chairman Tom Wilson said that Saxton harkened back to a more “genteel” era of politics.

“He is somebody who comes from that time and place in politics that were much more genteel, somebody who has friends on both sides of the isle, someone for whom partisanship meant less than getting something done,” said Wilson, who cited Saxton's record on military and coastal issues as his legacy. “His work on military issues is clearly going to be a big part of his legacy. But it’s probably more personal than anything. He’s an old fashioned politician.”

Saxton's Republican colleague, Rodney Frelinghuysen, who represents the 11th district, wished him well, and prominently noted his work on the Armed Services Committee. Had he decided to stay in Congress, Saxton would have become the committee's ranking member after the upcoming retirement of U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter. He’s credited with preventing the closure of Fort Dix, McGuire Air Force Base, and the Lakehurst Naval Air Station – all major employers in southern New Jersey.

"Every soldier today owes a great debt of gratitude to Jim," said Frelinghuysen. "His tireless work on the House Armed Services Committee has improved their quality of life and that of their families on the home front."

Democratic U.S. Reps Rush Holt and Rob Andres added their voice to praise Saxton, as did Republicans Scott Garrett and Frank LoBiondo.

“It has been a pleasure serving with him in Congress, including our joint effort - serving on the House Committee on Natural Resources - to protect the Pinelands and other pristine parts of our state. I look forward to continuing to work with him as he concludes his term and returns to private life,” said Holt.

Saxton's retirement has led to intense speculation about who will replace him. A leading contender is Diane Allen, a Republican State Senator from Burlington County and a former Philadelphia TV network news anchor. She was re-elected to a fourth term this week with 56% of the vote. Allen sought the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate in 2002 and finished second in the GOP primary.

Allen acknowledged today that she’s considering running, and has received phone calls from Tom Wilson and an official from the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) asking her to consider running.

“It is not something I had ever given thought to because I assumed that Jim Saxton would be in office as long as I was involved in government,” said Allen. “My first sense that there was going to be an opening in the office was when Tom Wilson left a message in my office asking me to consider running, then I got a message from the NRCC asking me to consider running and my head has been spinning ever since. So yes I am considering running.”

Wilson said that Allen’s popularity in the Burlington County-dominated seventh legislative district makes her an attractive candidate.

“She has run for federal office before, she’s a good vote getter, and with Hillary Clinton at the top of the ticket there will be an added emphasis on getting a woman (to run),” said Wilson. “There are a lot of reasons for Diane to consider if it’s right for her at this time in her life.”

Other names being tossed around for Saxton’s seat from Burlington County are Sheriff Jean Stanfield, 8th district Senator-elect Phil Haines and Burlington County Freeholders Bill Haines and Aubrey Fenton.

But Ocean County, which also makes up a large part of the district, could also field a candidate. Possible Ocean County candidates include County Clerk Carl Block; Freeholders John Kelly, Joe Vicari and Gerry Little; Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, Assemblyman Chris Connors; and Ocean County Committeewoman and former Assemblywoman Virginia Haines.

Ocean County GOP Chairman George Gilmore said that it’s too early to tell whether his organization will field a candidate for the seat, and that the three Republican organizations from the counties that make up the congressional district should all have a say.

“Hopefully the three organizations will have a consensus as to who the nominee will be,” said Gilmore. ‘I think we have to give it some time to see who is interested in running.”

Adler said that Saxton’s departure will not change the dynamic of his campaign.

“He’s been a gentleman to me over the years and on a personal basis I wish him nothing but good things,” said Adler. “I don’t think there’s any question that Congressman Saxton was and remains a popular figure in the third district, but I think the positions he and the Republicans embraced recently are more at odds with what the people of the third district need.”

The absence of an incumbent may boost Adler’s chances in this district, which can go either way in national and statewide elections. The district is dominated by Burlington and Ocean Counties, and includes the Camden County town of Cherry Hill. In 2004, Bush carried the district with about 51% of the vote, while in 2000 Gore won it with 55.1%. That same year, Bob Franks won the district over Jon Corzine by roughly 19,000 votes. In his 2005 gubernatorial campaign, Corzine lost the district to Doug Forrester by about 4,000 votes.

But while other Republicans had close races in the district, Saxton has consistently won reelection by solid margins. His closest recent race was against Susan Bass Levin in 2000, when he won 58.2% of the vote .

DCCC spokeswoman Carrie James suggested that Saxton's decision to retire may be due to more than just his health. Saxton’s stance on unpopular New Jersey issues like the Iraq War and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program have handicapped him, she said.

“Congressman Saxton's decision to retire is a clear indication that the Republicans who refuse to separate themselves from President Bush on issues like Iraq and providing affordable health care for 10 million kids are in danger of losing their jobs,” said James.

NRCC spokesman Ken Spain was confident that Repulbicans would prevail there.

“New Jersey’s third district is a Republican leaning seat. In last Tuesday’s elections Republicans in Burlington County posted impressive victories including winning an open state senate seat,” said Spain. “We are confident that we can retain the seat.”

For the Record

Before getting into election battle politics with Republicans about this seat, I wanted to mention some good things about Saxton, even though I've been probably his harshest critic on here and am a Democrat.

Congressman Saxton received the highest rating of any Republican in Congress on environmental issues. He deserves praise for helping with clean water bills and environmental preservation.

Saxton helped keep Ft. Monmouth and Ft. Dix in operation, helping keep jobs and federal money flowing into BurlCo and the state.

In recent years, Saxton has been receiving high ratings (100% from the Humane Society) for his ethical work in helping homeless animals in congress.

Thanks, Congressman Saxton, for your service.

Paging Diane Allen...

The only one who is moderate enough and proven enough to win a congressional district that barely favors Republicans.

Martin One, start getting ready your anti-Allen material again...

Its McGuire

Saxton worked to keep McGuire and Dix off the BRAC list and helped to create thousands of jobs in South Jersey by supporting these bases and Lockheed Martin.  He has been a great representative.

FYI--Fort Monmouth is closing thanks to Rep. Holt.

Wither Ocean County?

What is the party affiliation breakdown of the Third Dist. for both parties among the three counties?  Anyone?

Ocean County Seat?

Is there a viable canidate to come from Toms River or one of the other shore towns?

I get the impression that this district is really a Burlington County hold

Ocean is split...

Allen is the slam dunk choice. She is the most prominent State official in the district on the GOP side.

I think we will hold this seat but we need someone up for the battle and Allen is our woman.

Just what the House Republican Caucus needs, another RINO.

I wrote "RINO", not "Rhino" (the confusion is understandable.)

Now Marty

can really put a label on Allen as a Bushie.  Or will Dennison seek out retribution and try to campaign against Allen and blame her for the ills of Willingboro

Allen vs. Adler will be a great match up and lots of money will be spent on this.

Here are some answers to your questions based on 2007 statistics:

Burlington - R's 51,776 D's 50,532 Ind/Unaff 141,265

Ocean - R's 80,232 D's 47,476 Ind/Unaff 218,346

Camden - only Cherry Hill is in the District meaning 75k voters.

And while I think Diane will be a tough opponent, her recent flare up with Paulsen may come back to hurt her.  Also, George Gilmore will definitely run someone from Ocean.  It is the population/Republican base of the District.  There are a few folks who may run.  Joe Viacri threatened to run against Saxton years back.  Also, Chris Connors would be a strong candidate.  Plenty of time to sort things out.

Thank You Congressman Saxton

You have served us well and God Speed in your future endeavors!

After all these years waiting for the old man to retire - no way.  His senate seat is safe even if a primary threat is raised. After thinking about this I doubt Allen will jump in either.  The last go around left a bad taste in her mouth.

Well said.

It is also interesting to note that in 2012 new district line will have been drawn.  So the winner in 2008 may see a radically different district.

Ditto on the kind words posted about Congressman Saxton

A decent man with a good record of service to his district.  Best wishes for a happy and healthy retirement.

Observations on Saxton & the District

Saxton has been a good congressman and he will be missed.

The next congressman from this district will be from Ocean County and will be a Republican.

Adler will make a good run, but he'll fall short based on the demographics, partisan advantages in Ocean and Burlington, the issues, and his record in Trenton.

11/09/07 4:08 pm

She'll have to get through the primary first

Allen's district is only about 9% of the primary vote, and she's to the left of Hillary Clinton.

Party Breakdowns in District

The OC:

Are these numbers (for parties) county-wide for Ocean and Burlington -- or just the parts that are in the district?  A good part of Ocean (and maybe some of Burlington - I'm not sure) are in Chris Smith's district.

DON'T DO IT, FRANK!

DEERFIELD: LoBiondo Brothers Trucking is on fire

DEERFIELD — Dozens of firefighters are on the scene of a blaze at LoBiondo Brothers Trucking, in the 700 block of Landis Avenue.

Crews from Seabrook, Rosenhayn, Bridgeton and Vineland are working the fire, which appears to have broken out in the office of the trucking firm. Flames are visible from the roof of the office and doors on an adjacent loading dock are charred and blackened, according to a Daily Journal staffer on scene.

The staffer reports heavy black smoke visible for several miles leading into the scene.

The company’s trucks are stored in a lot at the rear of the building.

The Daily Journal will update this story with pictures and more information as soon as they become available.

Rep. Frelinghuysen represents the 11th congressional district, not the 13th.

Also, Rep. Saxton is an amazing congressman, i am saddened to see him go.  Best of luck in retirement.

I need to go print up some "Allen 08" campaign literature.

Lockheed Martin

Saxton brings home alot of money to Lockheed Martin, which employs 6,000 voters in South Jersey.

A Democrat will never be able to bring in the Federal Contracts that Saxton did.

If a Dem wins, 6,000 people will get fired.  They know it, so expect a huge grass roots effort by citizens to keep that seat in Republican hands.

DCCC Woman None too Bright

Wow. Could the DCCC be any MORE out of touch.  Beloved Congressman retires because he has cancer and they see it as an opportunity to attack, attack, attack.  Adler should denounce her and her remarks ... it would do him a world of good in the district.

Not So Simple...

These days treating non malignant prostate cancer isn't neccessarily disabling. Saxton himself says the prognosis is good.

I wish him well as a human being and may he live to be a hundred and twelve; but I don't buy the story.

The district has been trending Democratic and 08 looks to be a bad year for congressional Republicans as they get hit with the backlash for supporting/enabling an incompetent lying administration drunk with power and suffering from delusions to boot.

I remember when Rudy G smartly used this same excuse to drop out of his Senate race against Hillary; and left poor Rick Lazio to be outclassed.

Clearly Saxton has made some good votes and done some good things; but his votes against SCHIP are unforgivable and any Republican looking to become the nominee to replace Saxton had better condemn those votes and announce their full support of the SCHIP program asap!

It seems that, when he knew that he wasn't likely to be running again, Jim Saxton showed his true colors......and if I were a kid in NJ that needed health care whose parents couldn't afford it; I would see those true colors as ugly.

I bet Saxton has great coverage and the last thing on his mind is any question about how to pay his own medical bills. I wish the same could be said for all the children of our great state.

So, Congressman Saxton, thank you for your service, good luck with your health situation and good riddance as a congressman. You certainly won't be missed by the chidren who need medical treatment and won't get it if you have your way.

Typical

Let me first state that I should not be surprised by the DCCC spokesperson (was going to use another name for a female dog) and her heartless comments about an individual who has dedicated his life to the public good and is diagnosed with cancer,  Gutter politics at its best.  Van Hollen should be ashamed.

As for the 3rd, the majority of towns from Ocean are in the 3rd.  Smith has the following towns: Ocean County: Brick, Bay Head, Jackson, Lakewood, Lakehurst, Mantoloking, Manchester, Point Pleasant Beach, Point Pleasant Borough, Plumste.  The 3rd has

In Ocean County, the following towns are in the Third District:        Barnegat,       Barnegat Light,·        Beach Haven,·        Beachwood,·        Berkeley,·        Dover Toms River),      Eagles wood,·        Harvey Cedars,·        Island Heights,·        Lacey,·        Lavallette,       Little Egg Harbor,· Long Beach,·        Ocean Township,·        Ocean Gate,·        Pine Beach,·        Seaside Heights,·        Seaside Park,·        Ship Bottom,        South Toms River,·        Stafford,·        Surf City, and    Tuckerton.

Gee

Gee another heart felt goodbye.  Just shows the moral superiority in the Dem party today.  I have shot down your previous posts pertaining to SCHIP so I won't go there again.  But you are a true asset to the problem with politics today Nick.  Could use the same dog reference for you as well.

11/09/07 7:24 pm

bad taste

When a Congressman retires and cites health reasons, and you are in an official position as spokesperson, you don't put out a statement like the DCCC did today.  Rush Holt and even Marty had the decency to tip their hats for at least one day.  If people on this board want to speculate that there were other reasons for his retirement, so be it.  But for it to be done in an official press release by an official organization just shows that there are too many rabidly political people (probably in both parties) that care more about the game then they do about people.  Classless.

11/09/07 7:35 pm

Saxton retirement.

Adler's entrance into the race had to be a factor in Saxton's decision to exit.

Adler is a great candidate and much younger than the incumbent. He's Harvard educated and will be fully funded.

At this point in ones's life, is getting re-elected that important?

Diane Allen seems to be a logical choice in a place like New Jersey. The district tilts Republican and in a presidential year, anything is possible.

I have to believe if Clinton is the nominee, Adler will run away from her and to the right of Allen, much like Arohnson tried to do against Garrett in 06.

11/09/07 7:53 pm

Demsanddonts

Adler had nothing to do with the decision.  Saxton has $1.4 million in the bank and would have easily doubled if not tripled that for the race.  He had already defeated Adler once and now the Senator has a record (including eliminating the death penalty which will not play well in eastern Burlington and Ocean Counties).  This was purely a health related decision.  However, the stress of a political campaign would not have helped his recovery and there may be more to it than just prostate cancer.  Seeing his grandkids grow up I am sure was seen as more important in the larger view of life.  God bless you Congressman and thank you for representing us very well.

votes against SCHIP

Yea, I won’t go there either except to say the last time I look in the mirror but not necessary true for some morons on this site, I AM AN ADULT......enough said about the SCHIP thing it was a joke and a piece of  CRAP legislation from the DEMOCROOKS and all in DC knew it anyway.

And speaking of CRAP -  from a person who knows – ADLER.

11/10/07 11:08 am

SCHIP is No" Joke"....

Defending the Bush Veto was/is a radical and meanspirited (in effect, if not in intent) decision on Saxton's part.

That vote was/is wrong in the view of half of the REPUBLICAN congressional delegation of NJ!!!

I truly do wish Saxton well in with his health/longevity as a human being. May he live to be a hundred and twenty

When he recovers his full strength and is feeling his oats again; it will be interesting to see if he hooks up with the medical industrial complex in some remunerative manner.

Regardless of what you ideologues here may think about giving innocent children health care who may not otherwise get it; the ultimate arbiters of this program will be THE PEOPLE!!!

And if you have a problem with that; then you have a problem with DEMOCRACY!

So, please, go ahead and nominate another candidate to run who will take the Saxton position if you are so positive that he and Bush are so right on it. Make my (election) day.

Any Republican (who wants to have a shot at winning) will have to denounce the Saxton support of the Bush veto; or SCHIP will be one of the the central issue in this race (and deservedly so).

Bush has screwed this country left AND right! And it's congressional Republicans that have enabled him in that effort!

You want to talk about "class"?  In this instance Jim Saxton has aided and abetted George Bush in screwing the children of New Jesey just so the health insurabce industry could protect its market share....and, no matter how you dress it up in slick ideological rationales, that's just plain rotten.

Pot, kettle called

What is meanspirited are the comments you made in a previous post.  And although I said I would not rehash the arguments I made against your warped views regarding SCHIP, I feel compelled based on your demonization of the GOP members who opposed the big government takeover of the health care industry.  Yes - that is what it would have been had it not been for the courage of the members who voted against this crappy piece of legislation.  First, get this through your thick skull - no child will or has been denied care.  Period.  Moreover, what this bill would have done was it would have required some children who already have existing coverage to be added to the government rolls.  Why should I as a parent be forced to take my child out of private care and be mandated what type of care he or she can receive?  Additionally, those children with parents making 60, 70, or 80 thousand a year are eligible under the plan.  Illegals?  They get coverage too.  Legal resident aliens?  To hell with them.  They have to wait 5 years while those here illegally can apply and receive care immediately.  We would deny children care?  BS.  Maybe if we take the 80,000 adults in the State of NJ off of the SCHIP program, we could use that money to cover the 110,000 kids whose parents haven't even bothered to sign up for the current program.  I won't even touch on the fact that 21 million NEW smokers would have to take up the habit to pay for the expansion under the Pelosi bill.  Saxton supports expanding - but not the reckless boondoggle that was offered.  When the Republicans created the program - yes it was a Republican idea - it was viewed as a program to help those in real need and not adults or children whose parents have the means to afford health care on their own.  The bill creates a new welfare class which we had been successful in reducing.  If it looks like feces, smells like feces, it must be feces.  That bill was feces.
