Former Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler says he will not be a candidate for Mike Ferguson's 7th district House sat in 2008. "I'm not running," Schundler told PolitickerNJ.com.
There has been speculation that the 2001 GOP gubernatorial candidate would return to Westfield, where he grew up, and seek a political comeback in a race for Congress. Schundler was the Mayor of Jersey City from 1992 to 2001.

Will He Run for Mayor
Will Schundler run for mayor in 2009 against Healy, Fulop and Cunningham?
Buzz is...
Fulop may challenge Albio so Healy staves off a tough opponent. Still, I could see Schundler prevailing, I wonder if Harvey Smith wants his old job back?
Fulop, Schundler, Healy, Smith
I thought Fulop announced he didn't want the congressional seat and was going full speed ahead on his referendum campaign as a precursor to a mayoral race. I know the speculation of Fulop for Congress has come back up, but thought it was wishful thinking on Healy's behalf. Of course Schundler woudl want Fulop in Congress too, since it would open up a better path for Schundler to return to City Hall.
Don't see Smith running for mayor again, Cunningham and Co. is trashing him.
no bret redux
Healy's got a ton of money and the inside track.
Fulop may have a tough time raising money without looking/being hypocritical and taking it from developers. He also needs a citywide organization. Right now, he's strictly downtown.
Cunningham will face criticism that she's going against the "1 pol - 1 job" desires of the people. On top of that, the HCDO deal had to be that if she gets Glenn's senate seat, she doesn't run for Mayor. If she runs, all bets are off for a senate re-election. And at the end of the day, another Mayor Cunningham would destroy 30 years of progress in JC.
Smith will run if Cunningham does, only to split the black vote and deny her the office. Rewards from HCDO ensue.
Schundler. Bret, who? He's been out of the local game far too long and has only recent failures (election + nomination) to point at. His demographic (to the extent he has one) of black churches and disaffected yuppies gets divvied up between Cunningham/Smith and Fulop respectively. In a 5 way race, he finishes 5th.
I love...
How Smith and Cunningham ran together and now hate each other again! This kind of stuff is why I can never leave North Jersey.

Bret Who?
