Middletown Democrats hold May 18
press conference about bridge construction
MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP (MONMOUTH COUNTY, NJ): The
Democratic candidate for Middletown Committee, Patrick
Short, is holding a press conference at the
intersection of West Front Street and Hubbard Avenue,
in Middletown, on Thursday, May 18 at 2:30 p.m.
Invited to attend the media event are freeholder
candidates Leonard Inzerillo and Barbara McMorrow.
Short explained that the planned bridge will replace
an existing span that was renovated only two years
ago. And, that renovation was supposed to make the
bridge serviceable for the next 10 years. In addition,
with the height of the bridge being raised from three
feet above the water to 12 feet above the water, Short
has concerns about the intended use of the bridge.
“Middletown’s Township Committee is potentially in
another situation where it has not bothered to explain
to voters that a project is being planned, Short
said. “In this case, the committee has long discussed
the possibility of a marina on the Middletown side of
this bridge.
Short questioned why the committee is invoking eminent
domain to take part of the property owned by a township resident for
the project, when it isn’t necessary unless there is
another planned use for the opposing side of the road
from Walsh’s house.
“This project, if it is being planned by the township,
has profound ramifications for not only Middletown but
also Red Bank, Short said. “There is absolutely no
word coming out from Town Hall about why this project
is progressing as it is and I think it’s time for some
answers.
“Why was county tax money spent on the refurbishment
of the bridge two years ago if there is a replacement
of the bridge going on right now? Inzerillo asked.
“Did the contractor do a lousy job for the county two
years ago, which he was paid for, or is there
something here that isn’t meeting the eye?
Inzerillo said he is against the use of eminent domain
except in very clear-cut situations. “But, taking
someone’s property for a project that is very
ill-defined, the intentions of which are unclear, is
not a good use of eminent domain in my book, he said.
Short said that various Middletown civic groups will
be invited to the press event. The public is invited
to attend.
