Pennacchio continues his call to achieve energy independence
Pennacchio looks at tar sands and coal gasification
Florham Park, NJ (April 17, 2008) – US Senate candidate and State Senator “Jersey Joe” Pennacchio continued with his call to achieve energy independence today.
Pennacchio said, “Other candidates, on both sides of the aisle, have had the opportunity to lead the charge to energy independence. They have failed, it’s time for them to move out of the way and let me lead.”
“Foreign oil continues to choke our economy,” Pennacchio continued. “We must achieve energy independence to improve our economy.”
“In Canada they are producing more than one million barrels of synthetic oil from tar sands per day and we import approximately 20% of crude oil and products from Canada,” Pennacchio added. “The in-place tar sands oil resources in Utah are estimated at 12 to 19 billion barrels, let's get to work using them to their fullest capabilities. We should also look to our 250 plus years worth of coal reserves for coal gasification to produce clean energy. There are many success stories around the world concerning coal gasification including the Great Plains Synfuels Plant near Beulah, North Dakota. This plant produces nearly 160 million cubic feet of natural gas each day which is piped to Iowa for distribution to the eastern part of the country. Let's get moving with more of this clean energy source.”
Pennacchio concluded, “With a barrel of oil priced at $114.87 this morning we have to be innovative and bold and do whatever it takes to achieve energy independence within 10 years.”
