Some interesting poll numbers in a swing town

A poll conducted for the Democratic mayoral candidate in North Arlington shows Republican Thomas Kean, Jr. leading Democratic U.S. Senator Robert Menendez by a 47%-29% margin in this Democratic-leaning blue collar town of 15,181 people. The same survey, done by Neighborhood Research, gives Democrat Peter Massa a 31-point lead in the race for Mayor over Republican Peter Norcia, and Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney a ten-point lead against his GOP challenger, Todd Caliguire.

North Arlington's voter registration is 30% Democratic, 18% Republican and 52% Unaffiliated.

In 2005, Jon Corzine won North Arlington by a 56%-40% margin over Douglas Forrester, and in 2004, George W. Bush won the town by six votes over John Kerry. Corzine carried the town narrowly (57 votes) over Bob Franks in 2000, while Al Gore won it by 850 votes. In 2003, State Senator Paul Sarlo won North Arlington by a 54%-46% margin; in the same election, voters picked GOP Assemblyman Paul DiGaetano and Democratic Assemblyman Frederick Scalera. Last year, North Arlington strongly supported the Democratic legislative ticket.

Can't say I'm all that shocked. For starters, Tom Kean Jr. has very broad appeal just like Joe Lieberman in Connecticut.

Second, New Jersey has always had a statewide reputaion of criscrossing between the Republican and Democratic ballot. Especially Bergen County.

Ah my area. This doesn't surprise me, Menendez has become about as popular as the weevil in Bergen. I wonder what the Rothman-Micco numbers are here.

Don't be too surprised to see Ferriero cut off Menendez if he continues to bomb.

Congressional races are usually a much tougher nut to crack. Even as popular as Ronald Reagan was Bob Toricelli was able to win that 9th District seat. It will take a lot of money.

I hope that Vince Micco gets the fundraising support he deserves. I would hate to think that the RNC would throw an Iraq War vet to the wolves. The least they can do for him is give him a campaign warchest to work with.

Well and heck not every congressman is as good at stuffing ballots in his pocket as Mr. Rothman...

Micco might have a real shot if Giuliani or McCain is at the top of the ticket in 2008.

You really aren't delusional enough to think that a pro-Gay Marriage candidate like Giuliani or a pro-Illegal Alien candidate like McCain is going to head the GOP ticket in 2008?

Do we even want to give this poll done by Slick RIck Shaftan any credibility?

Shaftan is now schilling for the Democrats in North Arlington and of course he's torn as to who wants to win, he's hedging his bets here.

Come to think of if, when was the last time whacko right of right Rick Shaftan even had a credibile candidate who won something more than dog catcher?
