Senator Gerald Cardinale, (R-39), the senior member of the Republican Senate Caucus issued the following statement regarding published reports that the senior Senator from the State of New York was vetting candidates to fill Governor-elect Jon Corzine’s unexpired United States Senate term.
“I am surprised but heartened to learn that Governor-elect Corzine has shown strong leadership qualities by reaching across the Hudson River to seek out the best candidate to represent the State of New Jersey in the United States Senate. Senator Charles Schumer of New York, the chairman of the Democratic Senatorial campaign Committee, a post formerly held by Jon Corzine, is surely the best man to advise the incoming governor on his replacement. While he’s at it, why not consider asking the junior Senator from New York, Hillary Clinton, to interview some of the female and minority candidates that Chuck Schumer inadvertently overlooked. As long as the Governor-elect is polling out-of-state politicians to fill the Senate vacancy, we might as well ask Hillary Clinton to weigh in on the merits of appointing Nia Gill, Blair MacInnes or Shirley Turner as potential United States Senators.
“If the New Yorkers cannot agree on who the next Senator from New Jersey should be, maybe we could get Joe Biden or Ed Rendell to break the tie.
“I can only hope that the Governor-elect shows the same desire to reach a consensus across the aisle as he does reaching a consensus across our boarders.
