State Senator Joseph M. Kyrillos, Jr.

FAILED REFORM SESSION MEANS MORE PROPERTY TAX PAIN

Senator Joe Kyrillos, (R-Monmouth/Middlesex), today issued the following statement in response to a Department of Community Affairs' report showing that property taxes increased by 7 percent last year:

"Today's report underscores the dismal failure of the property tax special session. There is no end in sight to the property tax spiral that is causing many people to rethink living in New Jersey. I had hoped that public frustration with property tax bills at twice the national average would induce the Legislature to enact systemic reform. I and several of my colleagues tried to advance a reform agenda that would reduce the cost of government in New Jersey. Our efforts to provide lasting reform were lost when the Democratic majorities sided with the well-financed defenders of the status quo.

New Jersey homeowners will pay an ever increasing steep price to finance our inefficient and redundant system of delivering local services. Instead of bold action, the special session produced an election year gimmick that isn't sustainable."
