Senate Republican Budget Officer Robert E. Littell (R-Sussex/Morris/Hunterdon) issued the following statement regarding to reports that Abbott school districts spent monies with little in-house oversight and controls according to audits released by the Department of Education.

Middle class communities in Sussex, Morris and Hunterdon counties have suffered under an unprecedented string of five straight years of frozen school aid that neatly coincides with Democrat Party control of State Government. The cry goes up from the Abbott districts ‘we need more money -- after all it’s for the children’ -- and my constituents send billions in income tax revenues to Trenton.

What do the taxpayers get for their billions? Jeeps and jukeboxes! Paychecks for employees who have been dead since Nixon was in the White House. Nearly a thousand cases where vendors were paid more than purchase order amounts. Instead of rooting out corruption and putting the cheats and chiselers responsible for such deeds in jail, the response from the administration that talks about restoring ethical standards has been a collective yawn.

I would ask the Inspector General to investigate this fiscal nightmare, but her powers are about to be eviscerated by the State Comptroller bill that is sitting on the Governor’s desk. The very fact that the administration is poised to dismantle the very mechanism created to root out corruption, waste and fraud of the kind discovered in the Abbott districts shows how a bleak ethical blindness has settled over State Government.
