TURNER BILL ADVANCES TO BAN SMOKING IN CASINOS
TRENTON - A bill sponsored by Senator Shirley K. Turner, D-Mercer, to ban smoking in casinos and simulcasting facilities was approved today by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.
"It's time for gamblers to kick the habit or at least to butt out around the blackjack tables," said Senator Turner, D-Mercer. "Casino workers deserve the same smoke-free environment as everyone else."
Senator Turner's bill, S-1089, was approved unanimously by the panel and sent to the full Senate for consideration.
Senator Turner, who lettered in five varsity sports in high school, said gamblers in Atlantic City would be better off taking a stroll on the Boardwalk instead of smoking in casinos.
"Fresh air, inside and outside the casinos, can only lead to wiser wagering," Senator Turner said.
Senator Turner's bill would impose fines on violators of between $250 and $1,000 by adding casinos and simulcasting facilities to last year's Smoke Free Air Act.
