Monmouth Dems hope numbers boost translates into freeholder power, while GOP banks on McCain

In Monmouth County, registered Democrats now lead Republicans by 10,000 voters, according to the County Board of Elections’ registration report, which positions the shore county once again for a likely battle come November.

And finally it’s a battle at the county level, where gleeful Democrats see an opportunity to gain control of this traditionally GOP stronghold.

But while the Democrats want to use those Board of Elections numbers to trampoline their pair of Freeholder candidates onto the board to at last seize the majority, GOP leadership feels confident that a John McCain presidential candidacy will play to their party’s root strength here.

"Obviously a vast majority of voters are overwhelmingly unaffiliated in a county that leans Republican," said state Sen. Sean Kean (R-Monmouth), a longtime McCain supporter.

Democrats hope to make past inch-by-inch gains count in Monmouth

Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Victor ScudieryMonmouth County Democratic Chairman Victor ScudieryATLANTIC HIGHLANDS - Just one day after the 2007 general election, Monmouth County GOP Chairman Adam Puharic posted the results on his party’s website and noted gleefully that the Republicans had sumo tossed the Democrats out of the circle in every non-municipal contest - with the exception of one: a freeholder match between Democrat John D'Amico and Republican Jeffrey Cantor.

At that point, D'Amico-Cantor was undecided, and Puharic mused about the possibility of humiliating the Democrats with a shutout. But post provisional and absentee ballots, D'Amico squeaked out a victory and became the second Democrat in as many years to win a seat on the Monmouth County Freeholder Board, in a traditionally Republican stronghold.

Rumors threaten career of Monmouth Freeholder

Keep an eye on Monmouth County Freeholder Anna Little. There is considerable speculation that Republicans could seek to replace her on the organization line when she runs for re-election this year. The GOP must defend two of their four seats in 2007 and are concerned that unsubstantiated rumors of potential ethical infractions could hurt their chances to maintain control of county government.

Little, an ex-Highlands Councilwoman, won a hotly contested special election to fill the seat of Amy Handlin, who had been elected to the State Assembly. She won an unexpired term last November, but is up for re-election this year. Democrats won the seat of longtime GOP Freeholder Theodore Narozanick, with former Freehold Councilwoman Barbara McMorrow defeating Manalapan Committeeman Andrew Lucas.

Dem win in Monmouth Freeholder race will lead to fierce '07 battle

Former Freehold Councilwoman Barbara McMorrow will become the first Democrat to serve on the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders since 1989 when she replaces 85-year-old Theodore Narozanick in January. McMorrow, who came within 1,792 votes of winning in 2005, defeated Andrew Lucas, a 29-year-old Manalapan Councilman.

That will force Republicans to defend their majority next year, when Freeholders Robert Clifton and Anna Little (who won an unexpired term yesterday) are on the ballot. With an open State Senate seat in the 11th district and a hotly contested legislative race in the 12th -- possibly between Democratic State Senator Ellen Karcher and Republican Assemblywoman Jennifer Beck -- it is nearly certain that Monmouth will be a battleground in the 2007 campaign.

If Inzerillo stays, look for McMorrow to bolt

There is much disarray among Democrats in Monmouth County, where the party organization has withdrawn their support of Freeholder candidate Leonard Inzerillo. Under pressure to drop out of the race so that Democrats can replace him on their ticket, local sources say that Inzerillo seems intent on running anyway -- even without the backing of County Chairman Victor Scudiery. If he insists on remaining in the race, there is nothing Democrats can do to remove the winner of their primary. But if Inzerillo stays, it appears that Democrats will lose their other candidate, former Freehold Councilwoman Barbara McMorrow. McMorrow ran in 2005 and came within just 1,792 votes of winning in a race where the spoiler was a Green Party candidate who -- with the support of the Asbury Park Press -- won 18,698 votes. McMorrow seems to believe that she can not win if Inzerillo is on the ticket with her and has reportedly told party leaders that she will drop out if they can't find a more suitable running mate for her. McMorrow could also emerge as a candidate for the State Assembly in the 12th district next year, running with Democratic incumbents Ellen Karcher and Michael Panter.

Editor's note: McMorrow told PoliticsNJ.com after the original post that she intends to remain in the race, with or without Inzerillo on the ticket.

"With 89 days remaining, I am committed to spending every one of them making sure the residents of Monmouth know that I will be their voice in county government come November 7th.

To the contrary of the article that was posted on Inside Edge, I do not now nor have I ever believed that I cannot win if Lenny is on the ticket nor did I tell party leaders that I will drop out if they can't find a more suitable running mate. In addition, I would like to make it clear that I have absolutely no intention or desire to seek or accept the Democratic nomination for State Assembly in the 12th district next year.

This campaign, without Lenny, is well underway. Beverly and I have been actively campaigning for weeks and continue to do so at this moment. Our commitment to this campaign is nothing less than 110%."

Monmouth County Democrats Re-Organize
Victor Scudiery to Serve 9th Term as Chairman

MONMOUTH COUNTY – Victor V. Scudiery, Chairman of the Monmouth County Democratic Party received unanimous consent in an unchallenged race to continue to serve as Chair for another two years. The event, attended by Democratic County Committee members from across the county, was held on Tuesday night at the Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands. The Chairman, as well as the executive board were elected to a two-year term to serve concurrently with the elected Democratic County Committee members.

Also elected on Tuesday night was Rebecca Aaronson, a one-term Vice Chair of the party, former Manalapan Mayor and Committeewoman, and twice candidate for Monmouth County Freeholder. Her election, along with all other members of the executive board, was unanimous and unchallenged. Mayor Gerald Tarantolo of Eatontown was elected as the Corresponding Secretary, Susan Folta of Iinterlaken as the Treasurer, and Steve Morlino of Howell as the Sergeant-At-Arms.

Democrats both on the stage and in the room expressed strong confidence in their ability to elect Democrats this year in Monmouth County. The unchallenged races were seen as a strong sign of unity among Democrats as to who their leadership should be and in what direction their organization is moving. Candidates Beverly Bova-Scorano for Surrogate, Barbara McMorrow for Freeholder and Lenny Inzerillo for Freeholder now take their spot alongside their party’s leadership and head into November united to ensure that the fight to make Monmouth County a two-party county continues on.

County Democratic Candidates Win Primary Nod

MONMOUTH COUNTY – Beverly Bova Scarano, Barbara McMorrow, and Lenny Inzerillo, candidates running for County Surrogate and two seats on the Board of Chosen Freeholders respectively, ran unopposed in Tuesday’s Primary Election. The team, working together for some time already, now takes to the campaign trail as the official Democratic Party candidates. All three expressed their appreciation and thanks for those who voted in Tuesday’s election. The candidates look forward to a substantive, issue-based campaign and intend to seriously question the incumbents’ abilities to lead this county ethically, responsibly, and effectively.

Beverly Bova Scarano, candidate for County Surrogate, lives in Middletown Township with her husband Lynn and her daughter Christine. Beverly graduated from Middletown Township High School in 1960 and has lived in Middletown ever since.
