Obama gets line A in Hudson County

Those Democrats who vote in Democratic Party stronghold Hudson County on Feb. 5th will go into the booth and find Sen. Barack Obama’s name in line A, said Clerk Barbara Netchert.

"We put all the names into a drawing wheel and we select them one at a time," said Netchert, who first pulled Obama’s name out of the wheel.

Last was Obama’s chief rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton.

"I can’t believe Hillary came in last," said Nechert. "It’s my first drawing as county clerk and I’m going to be put in the hot seat."

Hudson Clerk candidates keep it civil

While their tickets wage war, Hudson County Clerk candidates Mary Jane Desmond and Barbara Netchert are unfailingly polite to each other.

“I ran into (Netchert). I went right up to her when she was coming up the steps and said ‘this may be awkward over the next couple months but I prefer that it not be,” said Acting County Clerk Mary Jane Desmond, a former Bayonne City Councilwoman and one time Republican . “I sat at her table for 20 minutes talking to her. This is not personal.”

Gaughan drops challenge to Quigley; Inclan will resign

A war among Hudson County Democrats was avoided today by Jersey City Councilman William Gaughan's decision to drop his challenge to Assemblywoman Joan Quigley. Gaughan is the Jersey City Democratic Chairman and Chief of Staff to Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise.

Democratic sources say that Hudson County Clerk Javier Inclan will announce his resignation next week. Inclan is expected to be replaced by Barbara Netchert, the Executive Director of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency and a DeGise ally. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy reportedly signed off on Netchert in exchange for saving Quigley.

Quigley, the Majority Conference Leader and Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee Chair, is widely viewed as one of Trenton's most competent legislators. Inclan, the first Latino to win countywide office in Hudson, will be accepting a position in state government.
