Bergen Republicans hit rivals on EnCap

The Bergen County Republicans are seizing on the joint federal and state investigation of a huge development project gone awry in the Meadowlands.

The troubled EnCap project would have included 2,500 residences and two golf courses before it was shut down by the Meadowlands Commission last month. The Bergen Record reported that, post bankruptcy, the project is facing a corruption investigation by U.S. Attorney Chris Christie and State Attorney General Anne Milgram.

Not all Republicans happy with Bergen freeholder slate

Bergen County Republicans feel that the scene is set for a competitive freeholder race.

Three incumbent Democrats are up for reelection to the all-Democrat board. There’s Bernadette McPherson, who just lost her mayoral seat in Rutherford by a landslide; David Ganz, who lost his mayoral seat in Fair Lawn to Republican Ed Trawinski in 2005 (although he was reelected to the freeholder board that same year); and the brand new Vernon Walton, a former Englewood councilman who lost that seat to Democratic Assemblyman Gordon Johnson in 2006.

“McPherson and Ganz, I think, are the soft underbelly of the Democratic freeholder board,” said Republican state Sen. Gerald Cardinale.

Add to the chastened incumbents a few local circumstances, like the growing EnCap controversy, the indictment of former Democratic state Sen. Joe Coniglio and having the popular Republican Kathleen Donovan on the ballot for reelection as county clerk, and some Republicans feel that they have the makings for a good race and a chance to win a Freeholder seat for the first time since Lisa Randall won one in 2003.

“The (Democrats) each have baggage,” said Republican strategist Thom Ammirato. “You’ve got great issues floating around them.”

McPherson in fight to stay as Rutherford Mayor

In southern Bergen County, Republicans are focusing much of their energy on one town: Rutherford.

Democratic Mayor Bernadette P. McPherson, who is also a Bergen County Freeholder, is up for re-election along on a slate with Democratic Councilmen Ray Frazier and Richard Reyes.  Currently, the balance of power on the council is 5-1 Democratic.  The Republicans have fielded attorney John Hipp for mayor, along with Rose Inguanti and John Sasso in an attempt to tie council.

But more is at stake that just the leadership of this town of 18,000.  The election is one of the first offensive moves by new Bergen County Republican Chairman Robert Ortiz, who’s trying to slowly claw the Republicans back to power town by town.  And it just so happens that this was one of the first towns that Bergen County Chairman Joseph Ferriero turned over to Democrats, with McPherson’s election in 1999 and winning a council majority the year before that.

For Ferriero, maybe another fight

Bergen County Democrats were not supposed to be defending their 6-1 majority on the Board of Freehodlers this year, but suddenly it is possible that they must do exactly that. A new poll conducted for the Bergen GOP by Rick Shaftan's Neighborhood Research shows the county race in a statistical dead heat between Democratic incumbents Bernadette McPherson and David Ganz and Republican challengers Michael Kaplan, the Mayor of Norwood, and Ramsey attorney Kelly Kirk. If Kaplan and Kirk were to win, that would reduce the Democratic majority to 4-3.

The problem for Democratic County Chairman Joseph Ferriero is that one of the four Democrats is Valerie Vainieri Huttle, who has had no trouble declaring her independence from Ferriero and the Bergen Democratic organization. Huttle is headed to the Assembly (probably in a few weeks) but remains a Freeholder, if she wants to be, until at least January 2007. Huttle plus three Republicans could effectively remove control of the Bergen Freeholder Board from Ferriero; that could make her -- and State Senator-elect Loretta Weinberg (who gets senatorial courtesy over Bergen appointments as soon as she takes office) -- considerable powers in Bergen County politics.

Kaplan and Kirk for Bergen County Freeholder

Release Date: Oct 6 2005

Statement to the League of Women Voters

To the members of The League and to the guests who have gathered for tonight's freeholder debate, we are sorry to disappoint you. Please accept our apologies for not being here, but there is an important meeting tonight in Rutherford on the controversial EnCap development that we believe we must attend. The EnCap project is of vital concern to the many residents of Rutherford, Lyndhurst and North Arlington. This project has gone from one that promised recreation to thousands of Bergen County residents, to one that will burden communities with thousands of units of unwanted low and moderate income housing.
