Asselta for Assembly?

In his concession speech, State Senator Nicholas Asselta said that he would be back.  People who know him aren’t surprised by such a pledge; Asselta, his friends say, will be miserable when he’s out of office.  Don’t be surprised to see Asselta run for his old Assembly seat in 2009, when Jeff Van Drew isn’t on the ballot – he’d be a fairly formidable candidate against newly-elected Democrat Matthew Milam. Asselta could position himself for a Senate comeback if Van Drew falters – or moves on. 

He wouldn’t be the first politician to be forced to be happy with a consolation prize.

Herald News endorses Bate for Passaic County Surrogate

The Herald News has endorsed Passaic County Surrogate Bill Bate for re-election. Bate served as a State Senator from 1972 to 1974 and as an Assemblyman from 1974 to 1982 before running countywide. READ

The Harvey Smith Club

When L. Harvey Smith returns to Trenton in January, he will join a rather obscure and exclusive club: former State Senators who become Assemblymen. Smith served in the Senate for three months in 2003 and 2004, between Joseph Charles' resignation to become a Superior Court Judge and Glenn Cunningham taking office in January 2004.
