Pascoe: the Schundler that could have been

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Chicago-based political consultant Bill Pascoe, who ran Bret Schundler’s 2001 and 2005 gubernatorial bids, said that had it not been for the need to feed the media beast, Schundler could have easily won his first gubernatorial bid.

And today, eight years after leaving office as Jersey City mayor, Pascoe believes that not only does Schundler have a good chance to reclaim that seat, but that he’s one of the leading contenders.

Sitting at yesterday's New Jersey delegation breakfast at the Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport, Pascoe flashed back to early 2001. He was managing Schundler’s fledgling campaign for governor, and couldn’t gain any traction with the media. A top statehouse reporter, he said, told him that reporters wouldn’t cover Schundler’s campaign because they were convinced that he was merely positioning himself for his mayoral re-election in May of the same year. So to prove his sincerity, Schundler didn’t file to run for re-election.

Democrats win Illinois house seat in race run by two ex-N.J. operatives

In a solidly Republican House district in Illinois, Democrat Bill Foster won a special election to replace ex-House Speaker Dennis Hastert.  He defeated Jim Oberweis by a 52%-48% margin in a race managed by two onetime New Jersey political operatives.  Foster's race was run by Tom Bowen, who managed campaigns for Paul Moriarty and David Mayer in 2003, while the Oberweis campaign was headed by Bill Pascoe, who ran campaigns for Bret Schundler, Douglas Forrester and Nicholas Asselta.

Does Bill Foster’s victory in Illinois District 14 provide insight into the competitive U.S. House races in Districts 3 and 7?

According to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, it does.

In Illinois, it's Pascoe vs. Bowen

A Special Election for Congress in Illinois’ 14th district – the seat formerly held by Dennis Hastert – is of special interest to New Jerseyans because the campaigns of the two major party candidates are being run by operatives who once worked in this state.  The campaign of Republican Jim Oberweis is being run by Bill Pascoe, who has run campaigns for Bret Schundler, Douglas Forrester, Nicholas Asselta and others.  And Tom Bowen, who ran the Assembly campaigns of Paul Moriarty and David Mayer in 2003, is managing Democrat Bill Foster’s race.  According to Chris Cillizza’s analysis in The Washington Post, this is a close race in a reliably Republican district.

Must see TV: Ayscue vs. Pascoe

Poltical junkies should not miss NJN's On the Record this weekend: Democratic strategist Steve Ayscue and GOP consultant Bill Pascoe face off in a discussion on the race for State Senate in the 1st district. Ayscue is backing Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew, while Pascoe is working for the Republican incumbent, Senator Nicholas Asselta. Ayscue and Pascoe have the potential to be incredibly entertaining, and you can be sure they won't agree on much in this hotly contested legislative race.

Pascoe's Away Messages are always fun

From Bill Pascoe, who ran statewide campaigns in New Jersey and now heads a political consulting firm in Chicago: "Kudos to Bob Menendez for rolling out the red carpet and making Barack Obama feel right at home. With one of Obama's major donors, Tony Rezko, getting indicted on a 24-count federal corruption charge yesterday, it was awfully thoughtful of Sen. Menendez to make Sen. Obama feel right at home by putting him on stage with another guy under federal investigation. Hudson County, as everyone knows, is Cook County spelled differently."

Always entertaining

The latest AOL away message from Republican strategist Bill Pascoe: "Help! After seeing the results of the new Quinnipiac survey, I've fallen off my chair and I can't get up! Send an ambulance, but please make sure it's not from one of the scores of towns that got short-changed by the Dems' diversion of homeland security and first-responder funds to towns represented by Dem legislators!"
