Johnson continues attempt at damage control

Assemblyman Gordon Johnson has taken some lumps lately -- enough to make it appear that, out of the three ethics crusading 37th district legislators, he’s the most vulnerable.

Ever since he joined his running mates, state Sen. Loretta Weinberg and Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, to introduce a reform package that reignited the civil war between Chairman Joe Ferriero’s Bergen County Democratic Organization and the Real Bergen Democrats, Johnson has found himself in the crosshairs – both from Ferriero and his 37th district Republican opponents.

Almost immediately after the Real Bergen Democrats introduced their reform package earlier this month, Ferriero criticized Johnson as hypocritical for seeking to ban dual office-holding while concurrently serving as an Assemblyman and Englewood Councilman.

Nibot calls for investigation of Johnson

State Senate candidate Clara Nibot wants the Attorney General to investigate district 37 Assemblyman Gordon Johnson for soliciting campaign contributions at the Englewood police station.

Last month, Gordon received a letter from Englewood City Manager Robert Casey reprimanding him for accepting $40 in donations from four uniformed police officers at the station while he was a city council member.

Nibot criticizes Weinberg for holding a grudge

Republican state Senate candidate Clara Nibot says that her opponent, Loretta Weinberg, should not be spending her time fighting with Bergen County Democratic Chairman Joe Ferriero.

Instead, Nibot said, Weinberg should be addressing the $3 billion budget deficit that’s expected next year.

Republican legislative race updates

Three Republicans put out press releases this morning attacking their Democratic opponents.

In district one, Republican Assemblyman/State Senate candidate Nicholas Asselta questioned his Democratic opponent, Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew, over his former support for a bill that would have benefited U.S. Vision, a company that was purchased in a partnership between South Jersey political boss George Norcross and Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts, a Van Drew financer.

37th District Republicans try to qualify for Clean Elections funds

Democratic State Sen. Loretta Weinberg is a strong favorite to win re-election in a Bergen County district the GOP has not won since 1971.

For Republicans to stand any chance at all, their candidates say they’ll need to qualify for public financing from the Clean Elections pilot program.

But right now they’re not even close.

Dem candidates names on ballot in bigger, bolder font

Wojciech Siemaszkiewicz, the Republican candidate for State Assembly in the 37th district, appears to have a valid complaint against a fellow Republican, Bergen County Clerk Kathleen Donovan.  The sample ballots in District 37 list the Democratic incumbents, Loretta Weinberg, Gordon Johnson and Valerie Huttle in a larger, bolder font than the GOP challengers.  While the incumbents have qualified for the "Clean Elections" designation, there is nothing in the law that allows Clean Elections candidates to have their names printed in bigger type on the ballot; indeed, the law specifically requires the names of candidates to be the same size.

Gordon Johnson is not the brightest bulb in Trenton

In many counties, a State Senator being criticized for ethical woes by her own County Chairman could cause a race to become suddenly competitive. That's not the case in the 37th district, where Republican Clara Nibot has practically no chance to oust incumbent Loretta Weinberg next month. The Nibot campaign was effectively over when she failed to qualify for public financing in the Clean Elections pilot program. You have to wonder if Joseph Ferriero and Weinberg would have attacked each other if the Republican ticket had $300,000 to spend.

GOP candidate questions Weinberg funding of OPRA request

Clara Nibot, Republican candidate for State Senate in the 37th district is trying to make an issue of opposition research from her opponent, incumbent Loretta Weinberg.  What makes this interesting is that Weinberg is looking for information on Bergen County Democratic Chairman Joseph Ferriero, not Nibot.

Allen hasn't contributed to women running for Senate

"It still upsets me," Allen said. "Hundreds of years -- eight women."

But actually, Allen was the ninth woman to serve in the State Senate. She was preceeded by Mildred Barry Hughes (D-Union) in 1966, Jerry English (D-Union) in 1971, Wynona Lipman (D-Essex) in 1972, Anne Martindell (D-Mercer) and Alene Ammond (D-Camden) in 1974, Leanna Brown (R-Morris) and Catherine Costa (D-Burlington) in 1984, and Martha Bark (R-Burlington) in 1997. Allen and Shirley Turner (D-Mercer) took office in January 1998.
