WHELAN LAUDS BRANCA FAMILY FOR ADVANCING SAFE DRIVING

TRENTON – At a news conference today with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Senator Jim Whelan credited the family of Richard “Ricci” Branca, who was just 17 when killed by a drunk driver, for advocating mandatory use of ignition interlocks to block vehicles from starting unless the driver is sober.

Senator Whelan, D-Atlantic, is the co-prime sponsor along with Senator John H. Adler, D-Camden, of S-1926, known as “Ricci’s Law,” to make ignition interlock devices mandatory for all drunk driving offenses and to require their installation while driving privileges are suspended.

Pair of Bills to Hold Drunk Drivers Accountable Approved in Committee

TRENTON – The Senate Law & Public Safety and Veterans’ Affairs Committee added their support today to two bills sponsored by Senators Barbara Buono and Paul Sarlo that would increase minimum jail time for those caught driving while their license is suspended for drunk driving and allow judges to treat DWI convictions more than 10 years apart as second offenses.

TRENTON – Senator Barbara Buono, a long-time advocate for reforming New Jersey’s drunk driving laws, said today that Attorney General Stuart Rabner has thrown his support behind two of her reform measures and that a Senate committee will consider the bills next week.
