Poll: NJ primary now in play; Clinton's lead falls to six points

Hillary Clinton’s lead over Barack Obama in New Jersey has narrowed to 44%-38%, according to a private poll commissioned by one of the state’s most powerful Democratic leaders, George Norcross. The poll, conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner on January 30-31, was distributed to some Norcross allies earlier this morning and obtained by PolitickerNJ.com.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who ended his bid for the GOP presidential nomination earlier this evening, is expected to join Sen. John McCain at a rally in Hamilton on Monday -- the day before the New Jersey presidential primary.

Sweeney, Vitale back Clinton

Barack Obama may have gotten the support of Dick Codey today, the most popular politician in New Jersey, but two other prominent Edwards supporters have gone the Clinton route.

Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney and State Sen. Joseph Vitale announced their support for Clinton in a conference call today, burnishing their respective organized labor and health care credentials. They were joined by Mike Beson, the Edwards campaign state director

Vitale, who chairs the Health and Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, said that Clinton has the best plan to provide universal health care.

“I find her approach to helping solve this issue not just inspired but informed. I’m pleased to join her campaign,” said Vitale.

McCullough endorses Romney

Egg Harbor Township Mayor James "Sonny" McCullough is endorsing former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney for president, according to the Romney campaign.  McCullough endorsed Rudy Giuliani on October 1.

McCullough, who lost last year in his attempt to hold onto his district 2 state Senate seat, plans to offically back Romney on Tuesday morning.

Corzine gives Clinton an early AM time slot

Governor Jon Corzine will vote in Hoboken at 6:15 AM and then help Hillary Clinton by meeting some commuters at the Jersey City PATH station.  His schedule has no other public events on Super Tuesday until 8:00 PM, when he’ll attend a Clinton primary party at the Skylark Diner in Edison.

Lautenberg won't endorse today

There's still one big fish who has not endorsed a candidate in the 2008 Democratic presidential contest: U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg.  But Lautenberg's people say there is no chance the four-term Senator will pick between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama before tomorrow's New Jersey primary.

New Jersey's beauty contest could prompt a credentials fight in Minneapolis
