Bellew Says Hudson River Tunnel Plot Reinforces Need For Terrorist Surveillance

The recent success in ending an attack by an al-Qiada loyalist on Hudson River train tunnels, based upon FBI monitoring of internet chat rooms, brought both pride and worry to Congressional Candidate Leigh-Ann Bellew. She expressed "pride in the hard work of our security officials;" but she also raised concern over what she called "the threat posed by actions of Democrats like Frank Pallone who seek to inhibit terrorist surveillance."

In addition to the FBI's actions, the NSA's ability to monitor communications by those associated with terrorists has been threatened by Democrats like Frank Pallone. Bellew pointed out that the surveillance is "of terror suspects, not law abiding citizens, and is therefore narrowly focused to provide for our Nation's security." Bellew reacted to those who stand opposed to programs aimed at monitoring communications among terrorists by saying "they place greater importance on the terrorists' right to privacy than law abiding citizens' security, right to be free from terrorist attacks, and right to life."

Bellew noted Pallone's opposition to terrorist surveillance programs is consistent with his actions against intelligence operations in general. She pointed out Pallone's vote against the 2005 Intelligence Authorization Act; "an act that provides those charged with monitoring the terrorists who are trying to kill us the means and ability to find and stop terrorist plots before they are carried out."While discussing the Democrat's past voting record," Bellew said, "I do not know whose side Pallone is on when he votes against the measures necessary to prevent further terrorist attacks."

The Candidate said she would not only support such legislation, but would assist in the creation and implementation of other legislation to enhance our government's ability to stop terrorist plots before they take place. Such legislation would be narrowly focused to ensure that only those with ties to terrorists are subject to surveillance.

Congratulating the Administration's recent success, Bellew said she is proud to see that the objectives are still being carried out despite opposition by those such as Pallone. Bellew stated that, unlike her opponent, she would act with "the security of New Jersey families and the State" at the forefront of her mind when voting on terrorist surveillance issues. As for Pallone, Bellew said, "he has played politics with our lives too much and it has to stop."
