Caspersen won't seek Ferguson's seat

Bedminster Township Committeeman Finn Caspersen, Jr. said today that he will not run to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Mike Ferguson.

“I talked it over with my family, and the best thing for me and my family at this juncture is not to pursue the seat,” said Caspersen, who was mulling a bid last week.

Caspersen wanted to challenge Rep. Rush Holt in 2002, but dropped out of the race after congressional redistricting moved much of the Somerset portion of the old 12th district into the 7th.

Casperson is the son of philanthropist Finn Caspersen, Sr., the retired Beneficial Management Chairman who was ranked by Mother Jones as the 11th biggest political donor in the nation, giving $811,000 to candidates from both parties.

The 37-year-old Caspersen says he is “just thinking about it at this point.”

Pelios to retire as Somerset Dem Chairman

Somerset County Democratic Chairman Elia Pelios is stepping down after ten years.  Democratic County Committee will meet in June to replace him.

Four candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination for Somerset County Freeholder to oppose Republicans incumbents Peter Palmer and Bob Zaborowski: Somerville Councilman Dennis Sullivan, Montgomery Mayor Celia Xie Birge, North Plainfield Councilman Douglas Singleterry, and Rev. John Graf, the former Somerset County United Way Chairman who sought the GOP nod in 2007.

Caspersen will challenge incumbent Freeholder

Bedminster Township Committeeman Finn Caspersen, Jr., the heir to the Beneficial Management fortune, is planning to challenge four-term Somerset County Freeholder Peter Palmer in the June Republican primary. Palmer, a former Mayor of Bernardsville, was first elected to the Board of Freeholders in 1996.
