Madden's GOP opponent drops out

Democrat Fred Madden unseated an incumbent Republican State Senator four years ago by just 64 votes after the Camden County Democrats spend nearly $5 million on his campaign.

Now, Madden is unopposed in his bid for re-election to a second term. His Republican opponent, former Gloucester Township GOP Chairman John Jankowski, dropped out of the race on June 24, and so far, no new challenger her emerged.

More GOP defections in South Jersey

Gloucester Township GOP Municipal Chairman Frank Mellace is resigning, switching parties, and says he will back the entire Democratic slate of legislative, Freeholder and Council candidates in the general election.  Gloucester Township, population 64,350, is one of the largest municipalities in Camden County -- and one of the largest towns in the state with a Republican Mayor.

GOP infighting in Camden County

Gloucester Township GOP Municipal Chairman Frank Mellace sent this letter to Camden County Republican Chairman Rick DiMichelle about his desire to run a voter registration drive. Mellace says he has not received a response.
