Judicial overreaching on land use issues threatens the quality of life throughout Bergen County and must be reigned in, according to Kathleen Donovan the Republican candidate for County Executive and her runningmates. The candidates said that the only relief may come by overturning the various Mt. Laurel decisions by constitutional amendment.

Kathleen Donovan, Republican candidate for County Executive, pledged today to "conduct a top to bottom review of the county budget and eliminate all unnecessary expenditures."

According to Donovan, "A quick review of the county budget discloses taxpayer funds being sent to agencies outside of government. Unless these expenditures including grants provide direct taxpayer benefit they should be eliminated. Immediately."

The election of Kathleen Donovan to the post of County Executive will mean a leaner, more efficient Bergen County government, according to Republican Freeholder candidates Elizabeth Randall and Ed Trawinski and Surrogate candidate Jae Kim.

"Kathe Donovan has made the County Clerk's office the model for efficiency," the candidates said. "Just think how taxpayers will benefit when she expands those efficiencies to the entire county government."

Randall, Trawinski and Kim are running as a ticket with Donovan in the June 6 Republican Primary.

Noting that Donovan is the only countywide Republican elected official overseeing a constitutional office, the candidates said, "Although the Democrat controlled County Executive and Board of Freeholders have failed to fully fund her budgets, Kathe has made the County Clerk's office the most efficient and productive in the state. She generates millions of dollars of profits which are returned to the state and county treasuries each year. Kathe Donovan is clearly the taxpayer's best friend."

Randall, Trawinski and Kim concluded, "Kathe turned the County Clerk's office into a profit center. This coupled with her experience as the first and only woman to lead the $5 billion Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as it's chairperson make her the ideal candidate to serve as Bergen County Executive."

Donovan Calls for Limits on Public Use of Eminent Domain

The taking of private property for so-called public purposes should be controlled by new state law designed to strictly limit the practice, according to Kathleen Donovan and her running mates in the June Republican primary.

Nominating petitions for Bergen County Surrogate candidate John Scalzo were disqualfied today after an Administrative Law Judge found that he did not have enough signatures after challenges to certain signers. Scalzo is running on the BCRO line against Jae Kim, an attorney who is running with Kathleen Donovan. Scalzo has two days to add more signatures to replace the ones that were disqualified.

Woodcliff Lake Council President Endorses Donovan Team After Candidates Square Off In Joint Appearance

Paul Camella, President of the Woodcliff Lake town council, has endorsed Republican County Executive candidate Kathleen Donovan and her running mates. Camella's endorsement follows the first joint appearance by the two rival GOP slates vying in the June primary which was held in Woodcliff Lake on Thursday (April 20) night.

Fair Lawn Councilman Edward Trawinski will run for Bergen County Freeholder on a slate with County Executive candidate Kathleen Donovan. He'll join incumbent Freeholder Elizabeth Randall and Surrogate candidate Jae Kim on a line that will oppose the Bergen County Republican Organization ticket of Todd Caliguire for County Executive and Robert Yudin for Freeholder. The BCRO slate will not have candidataes for Surrogate or for the second Freeholder seat. Congressman Scott Garrett and U.S. Senate candidate Thomas Kean must decide which line to run on. Trawinksi, a former Mayor, has lost two races for Freeholder and one for Congress, but staged a comeback last year when he beat David Ganz, a Bergen County Freeholder, in a local race in Fair Lawn.
