Courier-News endorses GOP challengers against Buono, Diegnan

The Courier-News has endorsed Republican Dan Brown for State Senate in the 18th district against Democratic State Sen. Barbara Buono. They have also endorsed Republican Assembly candidate William England over incumbent Patrick Diegnan, and recently elected Democratic Assemblyman Peter Barnes.

"As New Jersey voters consider their ballot options in November, they should begin by asking two questions about incumbent legislators: Are they part of the problem? And if not, can they be part of the solution?" the editorial asked. READ

Cammarano might challenge Barnes in 18th

Peter Cammarano, who served as Chief of Staff to Governor Richard Codey, is considering a bid for the State Assembly in the 18th district. The incumbent Peter Barnes is has been appointed Chairman of the state Parole Board. He is expected to resign after the Senate confirms his nomination, which will trigger a Special Election Convention within 7-35 days.

Barnes' son, Edison Councilman Peter Barnes III, has already entered the race. Cammarano, a Metuchen resident and longtime Codey aide, has close ties to Edison Mayor Jun Choi.

Barnes deal done to help Choi

Assemblyman Peter Barnes' appointment as Chairman of the state Parole Board is part of a deal with Governor Jon Corzine to help get Barnes' son, Peter Barnes III, off the Edison Township Council. Barnes III will fill his father's State Assembly seat, allowing Mayor Jun Choi, a Corzine ally and Barnes rival, to fill the vacant Council seat with a Democrat from his own camp.
