Senators Joseph V. Doria and Shirley K. Turner introduced legislation last week that would eliminate the embattled Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) and replace it with an independent authority within the Department of the Treasury to handle school construction finances.

RICE: WE NEED TO MOVE FASTER IN BUILDING NEW SCHOOLS

TRENTON - Senator Ronald L. Rice, Chair of the Joint Committee on the Public Schools, made the following statement today after the Committee heard testimony from representatives of the Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) on the status of pending school construction projects:

"The main thing that I am concerned with is the time frame in which these schools will be built. The Administration has been moving in the right track with the SCC and improving its accountability, but now they need to move on funding the schools we have promised to build.

Star-Ledger article says any action not likely before 2008

Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose again called on Governor Jon Corzine and the Democrat Legislature to convene a Special Session of the Legislature to address New Jersey's property tax crisis and work through the summer if necessary.

Responding to an article in today's Star-Ledger, which said it is unlikely that Corzine or the Democrats will take any action on the issue before 2008, McHose, R-Sussex, Morris and Hunterdon, said the Democrats' delaying tactics are unconscionable.

Responding to a report issued yesterday in which a special task force recommended that the Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) be abolished, Assembly Education Committee members Assemblymen Bill Baroni, Joseph Malone and David Wolfe said the group's recommendations should be taken very seriously given the immense waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars within the program.

INVERSO CALLS FOR SPECIAL PROSECUTOR TO PROBE SCC

Senator Peter Inverso, (R-14), announced that he will introduce legislation Monday, March 13 which would require the Governor to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate allegations of waste fraud and mismanagement at the Schools Construction Corporation (SCC). This bill is identical to A-2807 introduced in the General Assembly by Assemblyman Malone and Assemblyman Baroni.

Senator Anthony R. Bucco (R-Morris) issued the following statement regarding published reports that the scandal-plagued, Democrat-run Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) plans to construct a $37 million elementary school next to a “sex theater and hotel known for prostitution.� According to media reports, the SCC recently told the superintendent of the Passaic school district that they would not pay the estimated $5 million cost to demolish the buildings.
