FERGUSON ACCEPTED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FROM CONVICTED FELON BOB NEY
Ferguson Refuses to Return Tainted Money

Scotch Plains, NJ -- Rep. Mike Ferguson has taken thousands of dollars from convicted felon Rep. Bob Ney and should immediately divest himself from those funds, said Linda Stender for Congress campaign manager Ed Oatman.

Rep. Bob Ney agreed on Friday to plead guilty to federal criminal charges that he made false statements and conspired to commit fraud and violate federal lobbying laws in the congressional corruption probe spawned by disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Ferguson has accepted a total of $7,500 from the American Liberty PAC -- Ney's leadership PAC. According to FEC reports, in 2003 Ferguson accepted $2,500 from the Ney PAC. In 2004, he accepted $5,000 from the Ney PAC.

Great line from a PoliticsNJ.com reader:

"If the Republicans really want to replace Tom DeLay on the ballot in Texas, then Bush should appoint (New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Deborah) Poritz to the federal bench, fast."

Douglas, we're not in New Jersey anymore

Poor Doug Forrester -- if only he'd picked Texas instead of New Jersey as his adopted home state. Last week, a Federal Judge ruled that it is too late for Republicans to name a replacement candidate for embattled former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who has withdrawn as a candidate for re-election and has quit Congress. The ruling comes less than four years after the New Jersey Supreme Court allowed Democrats to nominate Frank Lautenberg to run against Forrester for the United States Senate when Bob Torricelli dropped out of the race five weeks before he election. At the time, the U.S. Supreme Court -- still under heavy criticism for their role in the 2000 presidential election -- refused to hear Forrester's appeal of a New Jerey Supreme Court decision that allowed the candidate switch.

Blue 7th, a grassroots organization group focusing on NJ's 7th congressional district, called today for Rep. Mike Ferguson to finally purge his campaign of cash connected to indicted Texas Congressman and former Majority Leader Tom DeLay. After being indicted and having more than one top former aide convicted of corruption, DeLay announced yesterday that he would resign his seat in Congress and not seek reelection.

"The culture of corruption is pervasive in Washington DC, reaching to the highest levels of Congress and to individual members like Mike Ferguson," said Blue 7th chairman Nathan Rudy. "DeLay's resignation proves that Ferguson's Texas benefactor was crippled by corruption scandals, and it is time for Ferguson to give up the tainted cash he received from DeLay and his cronies."

New Jerseyans for DeLay and Ney

Tom DeLay, the embattled former House Majority Leader, has raised $10,250 from New Jersey donors for his 2006 re-election campaign, including $2,000 from ex-Congressman James Courter and $1,000 from Lionel Kaplan, a prominent Democratic fundraiser from Princeton. Kaplan also contributed $1,000 to DeLay's 2004 re-election bid. DeLay's Democratic opponent, former Congressman Nick Lampson, has only one New Jersey donor: he received $500 from Edwin Oroway, a financial consultant from Franklin Lakes

Three New Jerseyans have contributed to the '06 re-election campaign of Bob Ney, the Republican Congressman from Ohio who is at the center of the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal: Clare Hart, the Chief Executive Officer of Factiva, a Princeton-based Dow Jones company ($1,500), Matthew Hamel, the Factiva General Counsel ($1,500) and Wendy Whitaker, a mortgage banker from Lambertville ($500).
