Happy New Year and thank you all for attending today’s State of the State Address.

Mr. Senate President; Mr. Speaker; Chief Justice Zazzali; Justices of the Supreme Court; Members of the Legislature; Members of the Cabinet; Governors Florio, DiFrancesco, and Bennett; Honored guests and fellow New Jerseyans;

It is a pleasure to be with all of you.

Now – let me turn to my purpose today.

Something else for Mike Ferguson to worry about

The U.S. Supreme Court today upheld a challenge to the reapportionment of congresional districts in Texas, and ruled that State Legislatures can draw new maps at their own discretion, rather than be limited to once a decade. Does that mean that New Jersey Democrats -- if they can put their current budget squabbles behind them -- might consider new House districts for the 2008 elections?

PENNACCHIO CONDEMNS "KELO LIGHT"

Assemblyman Joe Pennacchio, R-Morris and Passaic, released the following statement today following the passage of legislation by the Assembly that allows municipalities to seize a resident's private property for private redevelopment. The bill allows this if the inclusion of the property is found necessary, and as long as the non-blighted property is no more than 20 percent of the land mass being designated as needing redevelopment. The legislation does not contain any real safeguards to ensure that a good faith effort has been given in order to save those properties from eminent domain:
