(TRENTON) - Legislation Assembly members Douglas H. Fisher, John Burzichelli and Joseph Vas sponsored to uproot the deliberate mislabeling and misbranding of farm produce as 'Jersey Fresh' and 'Jersey Grown' was released today from the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.

Vas primary rival withdraws

Barry Adler, a Woodbridge veterinarian who challenged Assemblyman Joseph Vas at the Middlesex County Democratic convention this week, says he will not run in the June Democratic primary.

“As a Committeeman myself I respect the clear decision that was made," Adler said. "Although I care deeply about serving the public, I recognize that this is not my year to run for public office.�

Adler lost by a 3-1 margin, 200-61.

Vas wins convention challenge

Middlesex County Democrats voted overwhelmingly to suppprt Joseph Vas for a third term at their convention tonight. Vas, the Mayor of Perth Amboy, defeated Woodbridge veterinarian Barry Adler by 139 votes, 200-61. Incumbent John Wisniewski was renominated by a wide margin, receiving 261 votes.

Vas appears in good shape for Assembly re-election

After the bitter 2006 Democratic congressional primary, some party leaders had openly threatened to take retaliatory measures against Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas -- suggesting that his attacks on now-Congressman Albio Sires could cost him his nineteenth district Assembly seat. While the animosity between Sires (who got 75% of the vote in that primary) and Vas have not subsided, the threats have. Vas is a heavy favorite to win the Middlesex County Democratic Convention against his only rival, Woodbridge veterinarian Barry Adler.
