Assembly Republicans

MEMO TO REPORTERS
BOARDING THE CHAMBER TRAIN TO WASHINGTON

SEE IF YOU CAN GET STRAIGHT ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS
FROM CORZINE, ROBERTS AND CODEY

1. Governor Corzine, since you don't support a constitutional amendment guaranteeing permanent property tax relief, what did you mean in your State of the State address when you demanded "significant and sustainable property tax relief"?

2. Governor Corzine, you said property tax relief "will not be built on a one-time 'election year miracle'" in your State of the State address. If you won't guarantee permanent property tax relief, then why should taxpayers believe their property tax credit will still be there in the future?

3. Senate President Codey, last July you said you were looking at a "permanent fix." In an op-ed that listed you and Assembly Speaker Roberts as authors, you said you were "working with the governor to ensure that (any property tax relief) will be a responsibly sustainable program." In fact, you wrote: "It would be a cruel hoax upon the people of this state to provide a tax cut that is not real and lasting. We have no intentions of engaging in any such exercise." Since you cut the property tax rebate program as governor, why should taxpayers trust you to deliver "lasting" property tax relief now?

4. Assembly Speaker Roberts, just last month you were quoted as saying the property tax credit you were going to sponsor would not be "for one year or two years. It's a permanent reduction." But you voted down a Republican bid to make the tax credits truly "permanent." So what is there in your bill that taxpayers can read and believe with any degree of confidence that their property tax credit will never be eliminated or reduced?

5. Speaker Roberts, how can you consider a construction worker and secretary who have two children and a combined income of just over $100,000 a year "mega-wealthy" and therefore undeserving of a 20% property tax credit?

IF THEY HAVE ANY DIFFICULTY EXPLAINING WHAT THEY MEAN WHEN THEY TOSS AROUND WORDS LIKE "RICH," "PERMANENT," "SUSTAINABLE" AND "LASTING," LET THEM PEEK AT THIS CHEAT SHEET (COURTESY OF WEBSTER'S) SO THEY CAN SEE FOR THEMSELVES HOW THEY ARE CHEATING MIDDLE CLASS TAXPAYERS:

- permanent (adj.) lasting or intended to last indefinitely without change.
- sustain (vt.) to keep in existence - sustainable (adj.).
- lasting (adj.) that lasts a long time; enduring.
- rich (adj.) having more than enough material possessions; owning much money or property; wealthy; having abundant natural resources.
- guarantee (n) a pledge that something is as represented; a positive assurance that something will be done in the manner specified.

UNION BEACH: “I want your vote on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 because I am clearly the better candidate, Leigh-Ann Bellew tells voters. “Congressman Pallone has had eighteen years to make your life better. I think he failed and failed miserably.

Pallone is a partisan leader who enjoys the power and influence of office and his only goal is to keep being re-elected. Bellew promises to be a legislator; a representative who has a deep concern for the district and our country and wants to be a true servant to the constituents of the 6th District.

“Pallone’s record paints a picture of a Congressman that introduces feel-good legislation that never goes further than committee. Yet he uses them for political bragging purposes, says Bellew.

She feels that if he’s not playing politics with these bills, then he is the most ineffective Congressman in Washington, unable to convince even his Democratic colleagues to co-sponsor his bills.

“There is the real difference between myself and Congressman Pallone, says Bellew. “I want to work for my constituents while he is looking to score political points for his party.

Either way, Mr. Pallone was given an opportunity to serve the people of the sixth District, Yet, there is nothing in his record that doesn’t smack of partisan politics. This means he puts his colleagues before his constituents; those same constituents who put their trust in him for 18 years.

“I want to alleviate the middle class tax burden by eliminating the Alternative Minimum Tax and the Marriage Penalty Tax. I want to keep the child tax deduction increase, keep tax relief in place for low-income Americans who were removed from the tax rolls, and keep Education Savings accounts in place, says Bellew. “Frank’s voting record shows he does not support one of these initiatives

“In contrast, says Bellew, “I want to secure our nation’s borders and enforce our immigration laws. He voted against both measures; preferring amnesty and Social Security benefits for illegals who would undercut American workers,

“I love America. I believe in her strength and in her future. I believe that as a middle-class daughter of a retired GI, wife of a small businessman, and mother of two young boys, I understand the struggles of young families and senior citizens and I am asking you to give me the opportunity to serve you. I promise I won’t let you down.

“I want your vote on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 because I am clearly the better candidate, Leigh-Ann Bellew tells voters. “Congressman Pallone has had eighteen years to make your life better. I think he failed and failed miserably, but I will let you decide.

Here is just a small sample of what he supported in his last Congressional term:

He sponsored HR 2059 which prohibits the commercial harvesting of Atlantic striped bass in the coastal waters. Introduced in May, 2005 the bill has only 3 co-sponsors and is sitting in the House Resources committee.

He sponsored HR 2197 which would provide health benefits for workers and their families. Introduced in May, 2005 there are no co-sponsors. It sits in five different committees.

He sponsored HR 3917 which would force employers pay for employees and their dependents who are covered under SCHIP. Introduced in September, 2005, the bill has only 13 sponsors and sits in House Energy and Commerce committee.

He sponsored HR 4088, to impose limitations on the use of eminent domain for purposes of economic development. Introduced in October, 2005, there are no co-sponsors. It sits in the House Judiciary and Financial Services committees. Simultaneously he voted NO to the Private Property Rights Implementation Act to allow homeowners the right to challenge eminent domain in federal court. This version passed the House.

He sponsored HR 4518 to deny Federal retirement benefits to Government officials convicted of a crime. Introduced in December, 2005 there are NO co-sponsors. It sits in the subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security

“The picture here is of a Congressman that introduces feel-good legislation then doesn’t work at getting them passed, but uses them for political bragging purposes, says Bellew.

“He betrayed that trust for political ambition, says Bellew. “What can I say that would make you put your trust in me? I can say that I love America. I believe in her strength and in her future. WEBBER RESPONDS TO COURT’S LEWIS V. HARRIS DECISION

Morris Plains, NJ – 26th District Assembly candidate Jay Webber today made this statement in response the New Jersey Supreme Court’s decision in Lewis v. Harris:

Today seven members of the New Jersey Supreme Court have sought to replace the very foundation of our society – the family unit created by the marriage of a man to a woman – with their personal views on family formation. In so doing, they have tossed aside a broad consensus reflecting thousands of years of human experience, the natural law of our Founding Fathers, and the collective wisdom of every major world religion and ethical system. Overriding the great weight of that authority on behalf of eight and a half million New Jerseyans are seven citizens who happen to occupy positions of considerable influence.

Jose Sandoval has roundtable discussion with Hispanic press

FOR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION
Date: September 24, 2006

Passaic, NJ Jose Sandoval, candidate for Congress in NJ-08, had a roundtable discussion yesterday with the top Hispanic media outlets from New Jersey and New York. The Hispanic press had the opportunity to listen to the candidate speak about his campaign and ask him questions about his position on key policy issues affecting the Hispanic community in the district, such as immigration, education and housing.

When I arrived to New Jersey in the seventies I only had $13 in my pocket. With hard work and dedication I achieved the American Dream. I was able to put myself through college, go to law school and develop a successful urban real estate firm, said Sandoval. This country opened doors for me and gave me the opportunity to move up. Now it is my time to give something back to the community and open doors for others.

I am running for the 8th Congressional District because we need change. The representation we have in Washington is broken and it is time to fix it and make it work for us again.

Sandoval added, Our taxes are through the roof, our children are not learning, and our streets are filthy, in disrepair and riddled with crime. Affordable housing is non existent and businesses are leaving and taking their jobs elsewhere. We all see these problems but they are not being solved.

For nearly a decade we have had a Congressman in Washington who has not been able to effectively represent our community. The voters of this district need someone who understands their needs and will fight for them. Someone from the community they can trust to improve their quality of life.

As Congressman, I will make sure federal funds are given back to our schools. I will work to give our teachers the necessary tools and I will provide schools with more funds for infrastructure.

Taxes are out of control, Sandoval continued. Our families and business owners are feeling the burden every day. Unlike my opponent, I support making the federal tax cuts permanent. These cuts help everyone’s wallet and help the economy. I will not only work to reduce taxes for our families, but also look for new tax incentives that help our small businesses grow.

Finally, I will work with the federal government to bring more programs to the district that will help reduce the cost of housing and help families own their own homes.

Republican Senate passes Menendez initiative

Democrats are touting an early legislative victory by the state's newest United States Senator, Robert Menendez. After just two weeks in office, the Senate passed Menendez's amendment to protect middle class families from a stealth tax increase from the alternative minimum tax (AMT). The measure put the Senate on record in opposition to an unexpected tax increase that might have impacted 17 million middle-class families this year, in many cases by more than $1,000. Menendez worked on this amendment during the Chamber of Commerce trip to Washington, causing him to miss the annual dinner.
