BUONO MEASURE WOULD REQUIRE NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION ON CHAIN RESTAURANT MENUS

EDISON - Senator Barbara Buono, D-Middlesex, announced during her keynote address at yesterday's Metuchen-Edison, Woodbridge Childhood Obesity Summit that she would introduce legislation today requiring all chain restaurants in New Jersey to display basic nutrition information on their menus. Dr. Marlene Schwartz, also a speaker at the Summit and the Director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy at Yale University, supported Buono's bill as an effective strategy to respond to the growing obesity epidemic, especially among our children.

"We know that Americans are eating out more and more. In 1970 Americans spent just 26% of their food budget on eating away from home," said Senator Buono. "Currently, we spend almost half of our food dollars dining out. This bill will give families an effective tool to make informed choices and hopefully reduce the incidence of obesity and its related diseases."

VITALE PUSHES PELZMAN INITIATIVE TO PROMOTE SENIOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS

TRENTON - Following Woodbridge Mayor Frank Pelzman's call in his 2006 State of the Township Address for senior citizen homeowners to be exempt from construction permit fees, Senator Joseph F. Vitale has pushed through legislation to accomplish this on a Statewide basis, which was approved today by the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee by a vote of 4-0.

"For so many seniors living on fixed incomes, and trying to balance a budget of high-cost medications and day-to-day living, home improvements can be next to impossible," said Senator Vitale, D-Woodbridge. "By removing the permitting cost from the equation, we can do our part in promoting senior home improvements, and allowing them to maintain their quality of life and remain an important part of their communities. Mayor Pelzman deserves a lot of credit for pushing this important initiative in Woodbridge, and we think it will work well for the rest of New Jersey."

"This law gives an additional incentive to residents over age 62 to reinvest in their single family homes," said Mayor Pelzman. "It is important that seniors have a chance to enjoy the comfort of their home as they enter their retirement years."

McCormac having trouble raising money

Former State Treasurer John McCormac is trying to raise money for his Woodbridge Mayoral campaign from the State Street crowd he met in Trenton, but he's having limited success. It seems that lobbyists and interest groups are putting their checkbooks away after learning that playing in the Woodbridge local race would most definitely annoy Woodbridge State Senator Joseph Vitale, the Deputy Majority Leader and the powerful Chairman of the Senate Health Committee, other legislators, party leaders, and a majority of local County Committee members who are likely to support the popular incumbent, Frank Pelzman, in the 2007 Democratic primary. McCormac's campaign won't be helped by today's news stories that three of his top department heads are being investigated for accepting gifts while on his watch.
