Tony Soprano's Assemblyman

For those who are wondering how a State Assemblyman from Newark can get a police department in Morris County to drop attempted murder charges, the geography is easy. Ronald Zellman, the corrupt fictional legislator from the North Ward, could have had a legislative district that extended from Newark to South Orange, West Orange, Livingston and into East Hanover, where Tony Soprano picked up his son. The district could easily go from West Orange through Verona into North Caldwell -- Tony Soprano's hometown. This map, of course, would mean that Senate President Richard Codey is Zellman's running mate. Perhaps Jon Corzine was relieved that some fictional Governor of New Jersey didn't bail A.J. Soprano out of jail.

A Tony Soprano-backed candidate would be a positive step toward reforms for this corruption plagued state. Sad, isn't it?

I always figured Zellman represented the 27th, though in the show they make up the fictional "41st District". The only thing technically incorrect would be the 27th takes in Newark's West Ward, with part of the North Ward in the 28th and Steve Adubato's center in the 29th. They were smart of course to pick an assemblyman who isnt close to any legislator from Essex County in likeness.

Zellman's district must have been drawn by Larry Bartel.

A minor correction to Tony Soprano's Assemblyman

In the episode Johnny Cakes which I believe you are referring to, A.J. was arrested in and picked up by Tony in the fictional town of East Haledon not the real town of East Hanover, If you look at the superimposed graphics inserted on the building and on the police cars, which means if you were to assume that East Haledon is near the real New Jersey town of Haledon then that would put Assemblyman Zellman's district partly in Passaic County not Morris.

A bit of trivia the building used is the West Orange Police Department complex at 60 Main Street in West Orange in Essex County. The Sopranos producers also made a goof, In the end credits they listed West Orange as the City of West Orange instead of the Township of West Orange.
