Here's a report from the front lines. I don't mean the insurrection in Baghdad, I'm referring to hunting season in Hunterdon County.
We're into our third month of this exercise of American manhood. A few little observations from my own farm might help enlighten. It's not quite the romantic bonding experience that you imagine. I've yet to encounter my first father and son slaying the wild beast to defend home and hearth while feeding the young'in's back home.
I did, however, observe a bow hunter last month while hiking through the woods. This gentleman must have weighed in at about 250 lbs. This was probably his first sporting experience since the hot dog eating competition at Nathan's.
He was perched in a tree with lunch and refreshments. Below him were scattered melons and corn. With the onset of winter the deer are without plentiful food. The smaller deer in particular can't find anything to eat and are quickly attracted to the pile of seeds. The great hunter must have been resting thirty or forty feet from his prey. Felling the helpless and hungry animal requires all of the skill and precision of a bather finding the surf. The arrow flies directly down on the feeding animal.
It only gets worse. The slaughter is only part of the story. Days latter my dog begins to arrive home with various body parts. Whole legs, ribs and skulls arrive at my door. It isn't enough that the animal is killed. The carcass is left to rot. Provisions have been made for homeless centers to receive the meat to feed the needy. It would make some sense out of the killing. It's just too hard to climb down from the tree and recover the dead animal. There's just so much exertion that one sport can impose on its participants.
Bow season hasn't even ended and last week I was greeted by the first evidence of the latest phase of hunting season. The roar of ATV's began to deliver the well armed marksmen of our State to the shooting gallery. No type of ATV is powerful enough because in this sport exercise is to be avoided at all costs.
Within hours our sportsmen had met with success. A small wounded doe was found hovering behind my barn. Her leg was nearly severed by a single blast from our precision marksmen. She shook in terror if you approached. Her panic caused her to urinate as her wide eyes conveyed pure terror. She couldn't move but she dragged herself on three legs to attempt a futile escape.
I'm not certain what was worse. Our sportsmen were such bad shots that they couldn't kill her or were too lazy to pursue the animal and end its misery.
I killed her. I ended her misery. Now I've become a part of this insanity. 60,000 deer will be slaughtered in New Jersey this year because we tolerate these yahoos and haven't the will to humanely control the population.
Now consider this. Many of the marginally stable under educated bloggers whose names appear below have guns. Need more convincing of the dimensions of the problem? Read their responses, consider their reasoning, evaluate their command of the language, and tell me that we don't have a problem.

Just like watching the Kefauver hearings when you were 5 days old, right Bob?
This is your typical rich snob's view of hunting. Bob fits right in.
You've lived in Hunterdon for how long, Bob?
Only the Torch would view his recent arrival to the bucolic splendor of Hunterdon County as cause for the locals to curtail several hundred years of deeply rooted traditions. Earth to Bob -- you essentially moved to what you perceive to be a nuissance. A handful of less than stellar examples of the sporting life and the fact that you quite irresponsibly let your pooch run around the great outdoors unsupervised aside, you should at least attempt to live in harmony with the prevailing culture -- one in which you have chosen to immerse yourself.
As far as American exercises in manhood go, I'd say hunting is a good deal more wholesome than trapsing around the globe with an aging Bianca Jagger on a pathological quest to destroy our intelligence capabilities and out covert operatives. Or how about that legendary antiquing expedition up the north face of Mount Ev-arrest with your personal Sherpa guide David Chang? You're a regular Davey Crockett, you are.
Besides, Bob, is it fair to let the inappropriate actions of the few unbridled yahoos you witnessed tarnish the reputations of the many responsible hunters that grace our fields and forrests? Kind of like saying every politician is a filthy lying criminal just because of the manic malevolence manifested by a certain former US Senator whose name rhymes with "more-a-jelly".
BTW, congratulations on being the first PolitickerNJ sanctioned blogger to take preemptive pot shots at his/her readers. What's wrong Bobby? No kids applying to West Point whose applications you screw up to publicly badger now that you're a civilian like the rest of us? Additionally, while I'm qualified with an assault rifle courtesy of the US Army, I choose not to hunt. I have an A&P about a mile away down Rte. 31 that provides all the fresh meat I need.
How'd ya kill it?
Back your car over it?
Is The Clock Still Ticking?
If it offends you so much to live around country folk in Hunterdon County, Bob, why not pack up all of your ill-begotten booty and hike on out of here? I do not know a single person in this area who is happy to have you around. Not one. You have even offended the powers that be in the little Democrat-dominated City of Lambertville with your lying antics over the traffic ticket you tried to weasel your way out of a while back. Parking by sound, indeed!!
Gee, too bad there isn't a mandatory notification law when dishonest, unethical or unpatriotic former elected officials plan to move into an area. You, of course, would have had to file three notices because you quite clearly qualify under all of the categories.
What would we call it . . . Bob's Law simply sounds too pedestrian, don't you know!
Here's a thought for you. Why not move in with the ultra-progressive snobs over in Princeton? They hate hunters so much, that they annually hire professional assassins to come in and cull the herd, so as not to muss up their pretty vehicles.
And as for your cute little pre-emptive strike on all of what has turned out to be very thoughtful commenters on this post, that tactic seems runs so counter to your claimed philosophic antecedents, don't you think?

Rat Face and the truth
That sniveling rat face Torricelli has probably never hunted or shot a weapon. He certainly didn't serve in the military and this story is another example of his hatred for gun ownership.
Him and Corzine are praising the abolition of the death penalty, and has utter contempt for sportsmen, hunters, scouts and others who actually use the outdoors for recreation and sport.
I guess him and Jon will impose a ban on fatigues, tents and mess kits next.
Hey Bob: Just go away!
Why Don't you Move to Hudson
Why Don't you Move to Hudson County if you don't like it..
torrecelli -Deer hunting
So what are the real chances that "Torricelli the trustworthy" actually hiked anywhere....ever... ? his knowledge of the woods is probably limited to select drop off points wherre political contributors could stuff bundles of cash in hollowed out trees... or secluded spots to take married women.
As for his knowledge on manhood and deer, it goes without saying that he lacks standing on either issue. First of all the autmn woods offer a feast for deer -- who -- judging by deer population estimates are not starving in New Jersey... nor anywhere else in the east . Bob -- those little round things you see on the ground around trees during your jaunts in the woods are called nuts, or acorns.... deer eat them....lots of them.
The only place in New Jerse where deer have starved overr the pastt gneration was in the Great Swamp in Morris County -- when "Visionary" and humanitarian do-gooders like Mr. T helped outlaw hunting. After a few years, the deer ate themselves out of house and home....so hunting was started again. Meanwhile, the "outdoorsmen" like Torricelli, who got their knowledge of wildlife from Disney -- continue to protest deer hunting and offer condoms to bucks ( those are male deer Bob.)
Mr. Torricelli should stick to topics he knows something about... like bribery, influence peddling, special interest legislation and illicit affairs.
Bob the "Torch" Torricelli, the corrupt man of NJ Strikes again!
Once Again Bob the "Torch" Torricelli, the corrupt man who was afraid to run for reelection because he broke the peoples trust, now has the nerve, to criticize those citizens, (a right he lost when decided to be corrupt) He even goes further in the his post to question the intelligence of those who would disagree. Well I question the intelligence of a man who breaks the peoples trust; I question the intelligence of anyone who does not look at comments from Bob the "Torch" Torricelli and critically examine them. Clearly the "Torch" who admittedly has lots of experience in back room deals, has no experience with hunting. Tell me “Torch” when you were watching the hunter how close where you? Did your presence frighten the deer? Did the hunter take note of you? Your story is a fake. It is simply not true. There is no way a deer would approach with you standing in the distance watching. Have you ever even seen one in the wild? The “Torch” continues and expresses his disdain for our founding fathers, our constitution and the rights guaranteed therein. I thought since he ran and hid from the election we were done listening to anti-American ravings.
I suggest Bob the “Torch” Torricelli that next time you try and make someone look stupid, try something which you have never done before, the Truth. I know, I know, everyone is gasping, Bob, the “Torch” Torricelli and the Truth in the same sentence? Bob its easier than you think, and it would probably do you a lot of good too. (Granted Bob the "Torch" Torricelli doenst have any woodsy stories with deer, so he has no other choice but to make them up)
Torricelli = The Torch of New Jersey Public Corruption!
I guess no Asian felons ever gave Mr. Torricelli a hunting rifle as a "gift".... just gold watches, grandfather clocks, etc.
Perhaps the NJ Department of Parks should release some wolves in Hunterdon County so the deer die in a more humane way.
Being eaten alive!
Mr. Torricelli
Dear Mr. Torricelli,
(I apologize for the informal title, but I refuse to use the title "Former Senator" in reference to disgraced and corrupt politicians.)
The isolated experiences with hunters you outlined are agreeably disgraceful. Real hunters, out of respect for both the animals and nature, take and eat the animals they kill. However, your post is so angry and ill informed that I have a hard time taking it seriously.
I can see you don't enjoy hunting. That's fine. You let us hunt, and we'll let you do whatever it is you wish - as long as it does not infringe upon our rights, deface the Constitution and the 2nd Amendment, embarrass our state, or involve you ever running for public office again. Although I suppose my last request - that you never run for public office again - is somewhat redundant. For you if ever ran for office again and won, you would invariably infringe upon the basic liberties of your constitutions, deface the Constitution, and embarrass our fine state. So please don't. Instead, continue to sit back in your pitiful retirement and whine. Continue to whine about anything and everything you want. Continue to be bitter about the disgraceful manner in which you left office. Continue to be bitter because this state will never trust you again. In short, continue doing exactly what you're doing. As long as you have no real power, I can sleep soundly at night.
Sincerely,
A Proud New Jersey Resident
A Defender of Liberty
A Patriot
And One of Your Millions of Critics
Deer Hunting
And we are to believe that "Christians" recreate themselves with guns and killing animals? Really? I never read about Jesus stalking, torturing and maiming. Surely this is a representation of Lucifer hiding in the woods as so called "Christian" hunters. This is one of the few socially still acceptable arenas of pathology. Wife beating, lynchings and group rape is no longer acceptable. This dirty work in the woods is a manisfestation of ignorance and pathology. To get one's adrenaline pumping by murdering and torturing animals is not a sign of intelligence in 2008. The smart people do not need this "rush" to enjoy themselves. Avoid these folks. They have underlying pathologies. Check it out for yourself.
The Smart People.
The "smart people" are the voters and taxpayers of NJ who have had enough of the political correctness of the ethically challenged such as the former senior senator from Franklin Lakes.
The liberals of New Jersey really have no problem with the likes of Torricelli, it's hunting they hate.
The liberals have no problem with convicted death row inmates, it's the death penalty they can't stand.
The liberals have no problem with Islamic terrorists, it's the military they despise.
The liberals have no problem with illegal aliens who join gangs and terrorize our urban cities, it's Steve Lonegan they hate.
Ridiculous
I will not address Torricelli’s post point by point. The manner in which he attempts to make his point does far more to discredit his character and his argument than any rebuttal of mine possibly could. However, I should point out that the basic evidence he cites in his post is hardly credible. He uses misrepresentative, anecdotal evidence based on limited interactions with a few hunters in an attempt to vilify an entire group of people. Just as it is unreasonable for me to conclude that all New Jersey politicians are corrupt based on Torricelli’s disgraceful tenure in office, it is unreasonable for Torricelli to make sweeping conclusions about hunters based upon the limited interactions with hunters he cites.
Some readers may be shocked not that I am defending sportsmen, but that in doing so I have defended politicians. But I know that not all current and future New Jersey politicians are corrupt, for I intend to be a Garden State politician one day. But Mr. Torricelli, I refuse to follow in your footsteps. I will not be corrupt. And I will not attack sportsmen. I will defend them. I will defend them not simply because I too am a sportsman; not simply because I believe in the Constitution; not simply because I believe in freedom and liberty. I will defend them because, sir, in my America, we do not use the irresponsible and irreverent acts of the misrepresentative few to justify treading upon the treasured liberties of the masses.
TORRICELLI ON DEER HUNTING
Hunting teaches violence, a disrespect of nature and a devaluation of life.
Hunting is Animal Cruelty. There are anti-cruelty laws that attempt to prevent people from harming or starving domestic animals. Anti-cruelty laws should apply to all animals, including wildlife.
People who hunt for sport probably never consider the true fact that the bear or deer they're about to kill will feel the same pain that their hunting dog would feel!
Hunters want to kill for fun – period. And many hunters have told me exactly that! They think it makes them manly. HA! HA! The truth is that the public's tolerance of invasions of its parks and backyards by armed strangers is declining, just as its sympathy for wild animals and its interest in non-lethal solutions to wildlife problems are rising.
Even my 13-year-old grandson wrote to me: Hunters think it makes them “tough” to kill a living creature. Yes, “tough” to use a fancy rifle and hunting equipment, bait, and camouflage to kill a plain, naked, unarmed animal. With all of the hiding, and baiting, and waiting until the poor thing has no means of escape, I wouldn’t be surprised if they tied it up and then shot it. There is no chase, no effort, no muscle, just sitting and making unfair odds for the “prey”. Believe me, it’s not so impressive for five or six men with all the tools of the trade to take down one animal. It shouldn’t be hard to notice that hunters use weapons and equipment that the animal would never be able to use, while the unarmed animal has to wait and die.”
Hunting is a clue to a mentality so philosophically starved it is almost frightening to contemplate.
Torricelli on deer hunting
I wish we had more compassionate politicians serving today like Torricelli. He is to be admired for speaking for defenseless victims that cannot speak for themselves. I am suprised at the comments here and thought NJ residents for the most part didn't have that mentality. Just because it's "tradition" doesn't make it right. We have to evolve as a society and I hope we can all become educated and enlightened, and develop enough compassion for others that we realize killing is not a "sport", and if you find enjoyment at taking the life of another, then you might have a problem.
And for those thinking I let others kill animals for me and eat them, I certainly don't. I am much healthier leaving flesh out of my diet and feel better that I'm doing all I can to protect Mother Earth.
As far as the overpopulation argument, there are more people than the Earth can take, but we aren't allowed to hunt people.
Ah, the vegitarians
Haha, I knew it wouldn't be long before the vegetarians showed up. Hey, listen Pam, I'm not a vegetarian, but I respect your right to be one. All I ask from you is that you respect my right to eat meat, and you respect the right of hunters to kill their own meat if they wish. On a somewhat related note, I'll be the first to argue that hunted deer live and die in a FAR more humane manner than cattle and other livestock slaughtered on corporate farms.
Hunting is 'a cowardly heritage of blood lust'
Some believe that hunting derives its "integrity" from the practice of fair play, i.e. when the animals aren't fenced in, they have a fair chance of escape. As an ex-hunter, I disagree.
What chance do they have against a 30-06 high-powered rifle, with a 150-grain bullet, deadly accurate at 300 yards? Not much fair play or integrity when the majority of hunters sit in a tree stand or on a hilltop with a high-powered rifle that can blow a deer's heart out at 300 yards, just waiting to kill an unsuspecting deer family that strolls by.
In 2002, the Rev. Andrew Linzey, an Anglican priest and authority on animal welfare, wrote an open letter to bishops in the House of Lords at the time of a debate over hunting. "The deliberate infliction of suffering on 'lesser creatures' who are wholly in our power, and who are strictly speaking, morally innocent," he wrote, "is a gross betrayal of our God-given responsibility."
Bottom line: There is no sport, fair play or integrity in hunting. It is a cowardly heritage of blood lust, and joy of killing a defenseless animal.
If it was fair play, and the deer could shoot back, how many hunters would be out in the woods?
Politicans and wildlife killers
Politicians grovel at the altar of the woodland killers because they realize that these are truly the "lemmings" of the political world. String the words "God" and "Guns" together and they will follow you like a John in heat on a New York street corner. I have never met a hunter (woodland psychopath) that does not kill in one shot and eat every teensy bit of meat ...... right down to the guts which they feed to the penned coyotes in their backyards which they use to collect coyote pee. Yup, every darn bite. And - the wife (or whichever lovely they are currently bedding) just swoon over the opportunity to cook and prepare the latest kills. Not to mention the kiddies - those same kids that throw out 75% of their free and reduced lunch, but yum, yum, they eat every bite of that coon steak. These guys and now gals (by the way, the percentage of women in hunting is increasing at the same rate as the percentage of women increasing in prison ....... ) have found a safe place to do mean, gory, ugly things to living creatures. The creatures can't talk. And - they (the woodland warriors)can carry wild tales. The politicians know ignorant cliff jumpers when they see them - the bright orange and stubble gives them away every time. Tell them you are "Protecting their God given rights to torture and maim living animals" and Mr. Politico Friend of God has a political apostle forever. Which of the Jesus brothers do you think shot an arrow in the eye of that doe we photographed last week? Was it the good brother "Jesus" or the other brother, "Lucifer" - this comes from the latest politico TV talk about Romney's education of the voting world. The two brothers theory.Well, my money is on the "Lucifer" brother. I mean, the blessed mother didn't kill and gut no does. Hell, Jesus didn't even own a weapon (or, maybe he just didn't register it and the apostles stashed it.) Bottom line - you torturers of wildlife won't be plucking no pearly harps. I hope you like it nice and warm where you are going ... My God doesn't shop at Walmart for Ammo and kill helpless wildlife for recreation.
To all the animal rights folks
I wonder how many of you are pro-choice?
rebreid
Mr Torricelli - it takes a lot of courage to speak the truth and counter the myth of the bold, brave hunter. Hunting nowadays has nothing to do with sport or courage or manhood or daring. And in most cases it has little to do with acquiring food either (the practice of leaving corpses to rot and taking the antlers is becoming common). It's a silly, lethal pastime that provides fools with an opportunity to alleviate their boredom by letting loose on wildlife who have little chance of escape. Thank you for taking a stand on this, on behalf of the wildlife and the many people whose property is trespassed upon by hunters, regardless of the No Hunting signs posted. As for the hunters, get to a gym guys. You'll look and feel better for it, and a few less of you will be killed and maimed each year by your hunting brethren.
It's time for hunting to be consigned to the dust-bin of history
Mr. Torricelli’s article raises some very good points. Form the comments that the Elmer Fudd wannabes make, it seems they travel in small circles and haven’t had a thought – much less an original thought in years.
Their litany of shop-worn excuses for cruelty just doesn’t work:
1) The US constitution nowhere guarantees the right to hunt – please have somebody read it to you slowly.
2) “If you don’t like it here move” is not an acceptable suggestion to people of principle; we would much rather stay here and change things.
3) “It’s a tradition” does not work either: slavery, wife beating, outhouses, killing native Americans, lynch mobs are all fine American traditions that were discarded over the years. The remaining remnants of savagery have to go as well.
4) “If you don’t like to hunt –don’t -- but don’t interfere with my enjoyment!” How about “If you don’t like lynching people-don’t–but don’t interfere with my enjoyment!” As a society, we have the right and obligation to abolish practices of wanton cruelty within our community.
Thank you, Mr. Torricelli for your courageous stand. Hunters are a vocal but very small part of the voting population of New Jersey. There are 84,000 hunters in New Jersey out of a population of 6,734,000 (both numbers are of people age 16 or older) which makes hunters about 1.25% of the New Jersey population. People who have a humane orientation constitute a much larger portion of the voting public.
Ok – New Jersey politicians – it’s time to get smart. Go with times or get consigned to the dust-bin of history along the Fudds.
Bravo Mr. Torricelli
Congratulations to former Senator Torricelli for continuing to educate the public on the abusive practices inherent in the so-called "sport" of hunting. To end this insane slaughter, the vast majority of the population who do not hunt must inform their elected officials that they want hunting relegated to the dust bin of history where it belongs. As one famous person said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil, is for a few good people to do nothing."
Dear Mr. (or Ms./Mrs.)"I
Dear Mr. (or Ms./Mrs.)"I love to kill animals for fun":
Pro-Choice?
I am ProLife-ProWildlife-ProAlllife
..... that's even your pathologically driven life. Stop hiding behind the NRA, Jesus Christ and putting food on your table. Jesus would never hunt and party with you in a tree stand. Jesus would weep at your desensitizing young children to blood and guts. Stop trying to rationalize your bloodlust by hiding in the robes of Christ. You are doing Lucifer's work .... Lucifer would be the one in your tree stands, teaching kids to use a scope on chipmunks, squirrels, etc.
The Christ is welcome in my non-violent home. Would Your Christ be out trapping wildlife and taking pics to share on the internet of the bloodied carcasses? Oh - and would Jesus be running foxes/coyotes in penning operations? You know the answer. Which brother travels with the trappers/hunters? Jesus or Lucifer? Everytime a hunter trains a child to kill an animal, Jesus weeps. He weeps because these evils are done in his name. He weeps because the devil is stealing the sensitivities of children.
Hunting, slavery and lowering the level of discourse
Any comparison of hunting to lynching, genocide or slavery brings me rather surprisingly into complete agreement with the Torch. Those who are so devoid of reason as to equate these horrific practices with hunting should, under NO circumstances, ever handle firearms.
As someone who is married to an African woman and whose children are of that lineage, I find your (VeganMeatball) argument beyond insensitve, patently racist and morally repugnant. While my wife and her ancestors may have been treated like animals by their colonial masters (they weren't even issued birth certificates under British rule), they were not beasts of the field but sentient, wondrously conceived beings created in the image of God. By equating hunting with slavery you callously demean an entire race of people whose humanity should never have been questioned in the first place and who suffered horrors beyond those any animal is capable of comprehending. If you possess any sense of decency, you should publicly apologize for your disgraceful comments post haste.
Torch -- I demand that you address the previous post equating lynching and slavery with hunting. If you do not rebuke this racist tripe, I will take it as a whole-hearted endorsement of this sentiment on your part. Because your blog and the words you wrote have become a vehicle for someone of limited mental capacity and emotional stability to spew hate speech, you have a moral obligation to reject these comments. If any of the many articles I have written or statements I made over the years had ever been misappropriated to justify racism, anti-semitism, homophobia and the like, I would have felt it incumbent upon me to immediately admonish such pernicious ideas. Now is the time to step up to the proverbial plate and do the right thing.
*BTW, I am the proud dad of 3 dogs rescued from kill shelters and, as I stated previously, choose not to hunt. So any assumption regarding my lack of love for all creatures great and small would be terribly presumptuous.
A question of Logic, reason and decency to Lord Xenu
As one who has stated that you are a man of logic, reason and decency, the proud dad of 3 rescued dogs, and has testified to your love for all creatures great and small, please explain to me the logic of how you can support the shooting, wounding and killing of sentient animals for enjoyment, that are no different than your dogs and the other creatures you avow to love. These animals feel the same stress, terror, shock, anxiety, fear, trauma, foreboding, and pain as your dogs. I'm wondering why a self described man of such decency and compassion isn't demanding an apology for the small wounded doe found hovering behind Mr. Torcelli's barn, whose leg was nearly severed, and who was shaking in terror. Mr. Torcelli said her panic caused her to urinate as her wide eyes conveyed pure terror. She couldn't move but dragged herself on three legs to attempt a futile escape. I look forward to your response.
Torricelli on deer hunting
As for hunting, I would like to add this for those who are unaware:
Of all types of hunting, bow hunting is the most cruel method because the wounding rate is about 55%, meaning that for every 100 arrow-shot deer, 55 stagger around with arrows imbedded in a non-vital area, for days, weeks, even months before they die. It took Braveheart, a magnificent young buck from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, nearly a year to die, slowly and painfully, after being shot by a bowhunter.
Another buck wounded by the arrow from a hunter and not retrieved by the hunter died outside my house.
"For humane advocates [and many hunters], bowhunting is set apart from other forms of sport hunting chiefly by its appalling high wounding rate - greater than 50%. In other words, it has been conclusively documented that for every animal hit by a broadhead arrow and retrieved by a hunter, at least one is hit and not retrieved, usually to die after prolonged agony from septic infection, peritonitis, blood loss, or other complications. The broadhead arrow is intended to kill primarily by circulatory hemorrhage. It is extremely difficult to shoot an arrow into a vital organ in a large ungulate such as a deer, and thus, a 'clean kill' is nearly impossible in bowhunting." From Houston Post
George, you should read my posts a little better
If you read my initial post, I describe the actions taken by the hunters Torricelli references as "less than stellar" and offered no excuse for their particular conduct. I do not support the irresponsible slaughter of wildlife. I do, however, support and defend the decent, honorable tradition of hunting as practiced by those in tune with the created order. I lived in Vermont and Oklahoma for several years and witnessed the types of bonding experiences the Torch has yet to see from the vantage point of his gentleman's farm. In Vermont, there are stiff civil penalties for those who do not act responsibly when hunting. Most states have similar laws on the books. These laws should be followed and, when they are ignored, the violators should be prosecuted. If I had observed a hunter engage in the kind of grossly inapproriate conduct described by the former Senator, I would not have simply killed the doe and been satisfied to blog about it later. I would have contacted the authorities and, if possible, confronted the hunter man to man.
Moreover, while you may never have spent significant time in the great American heartland, many people still hunt to put food on their table. I choose not to hunt because, as I stated previously, I can get my meat at the local A&P. My personal moral beliefs and my abiding love for anything with fur dictate that I would only take the life of an animal if necessary to feed my family. Killing solely for pleasure is not my cup of tea. Most hunters I know are nothing like those portrayed either by Bob T or the posters on this thread. I would be the first one to admonish anyone who hunted recklessly, especially given that they pose a distinct threat to all those within their proximity (see Dick Cheney and duck hunting).
Now that I've addressed your concerns, tell me George, do you equate a doe with my wife and children? Do you feel comfortable comparing slavery and lynchings to hunting? Are you a disciple of Ingrid Newkirk, who equates Frank Perdue's chicken business with Adolph Hitler's holocaust? Do you hire an exterminator to kill insects in your home or step on the odd cockroach when convenient? Do you extend an unborn child the same protections as you would Bambi? I'll look forward to your response.
No Better then a Shock Jock
Well done torch,
You have finally found a way to get people to respond to your usually boring commentary...you've insulted them!
You have grouped an entire county into the same barrel with what is, I am sure, a charactor so vile that he must have been exagerated to fit your story's needs.
I moved out to this area back in the early 1970's and have seen this beautiful countryside get prgressivly dumped on by self-rightous pompus asses such as your self after they move in.
You are no different then the McMansion owners who cryed about the smell of chicken farms after they built next to one.
I've had the opportunity to know some people who worked with you daily back when you were somebody...they are right with what they think of you and you clarified it with this blog
Please make sure your dog has an orange vest on if you are going to let it run free...feel free to wear antlers!
---
I suggest that everyone in the US stop eating any kind of meat, fish or dairy product... chicken eggs could be chickens too... LET THE CHICKENS LIVE!!
Beyond that... let's hire a special clean up crew to pick up the 10,000+ deer carcasses off the side of the road...
I'll also suggest a $238,234,394 study to analyze how effective it would be to issue "sterilization arrows" to would be hunters so that they can still enjoy their sport while performing it in a humane fashion that would also help to control population...
Regardless... hunting must certainly be outlawed as based on my own unbiased bipartisan study over 87% of hunters simply like to wound animals and leave them dying in the woods...

Lord Xemu
Sorry, Lord Whatever of Whatever. Not taking your bait. Don't really care what race you chose for a mate to make babies with - your moral equivalency argument does not make hunting/dog fighting/fox penning/trapping morally acceptable in today's society or even merit a spot in this discussion.I am sure that you - along with countless other conscience driven Americans - are actively working on the global issue of CURRENT child and sexual slavery. You might even be working on the issue of slave labor in foreign factories. Good for you. Still has nothing to do with hunting. It is obvious to anyone who does not have an ego to pump up, that the point being made by posters is that the issues that are culturally acceptable to a society at any given time, changes with the evolution of human moral evolution wthin that society. Apparently, the finer points of this discourse went over your head while you were so eager to let us know about your marriage, children and dogs. My grandmother was stripped naked, beaten to death and thrown in a hole in Poland - in front of my mother who was then raped and watched her sisters be killed. This has made eveyrone in my own family constellation tireless workers to reduce suffering in any and all forms. My daughter just completed a tour in Africa working with HIV orphans. ....and all of this is totally beside the point. Because we are not ranking world atrocity levels. The point was that people evolve and today's acceptable behavior will not be acceptable to future generations. End of conversation.

How about a government website that shows the benefits of hunting:

and seriously... everyone on here posting "anti-hunting" propaganda... you better not be buying any meat /fish products at the supermarket... you better not be wearing leather shoes... or have leather seats in your car... or heaven forbid have a fur coat... or be using any products that were ever tested on animals ( including prescriptions )...
also... anyone who is worried about child labor / slavery etc... i suggest you download the following:

The only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn't get worse every time Congress meets. - Will Rogers
Bait and the taking thereof
Hans, I was posting in direct response to George's post and addressing George. I was neither offering you any bait nor soliciting your opinion. Or has this finer point of discourse escaped your highly-evolved self?
Moreover, I make no apologies for objecting to any attempt to draw a moral equivalency between killing a deer and lynching/enslaving African-Americans. It is relevant to this discourse on hunting to the extent it was employed by a poster to equate the suffering of animals with that of a specific segment of humankind. If the relative degree of evil inherent in these infinitely disparate atrocities is insignifcant to you, I suggest you consider putting down the crack pipe and I'll arrange an intervention. All evil deeds are indeed evil. But certain acts of barbarism cannot logically be equated with others. Is loosing one's temper without justification, thereby hurting someone's feelings, the same as shooting up a school yard full of toddlers? Get real. Using an issue such as slavery or lynching to make even the most valid point represents the worst abuse of hyperbole imaginable.
Further, you posit without qualification that hunting is intrinsically cruel, even taking the liberty to lump it in with sordid activites such as dog fighting. I and many other less evolved sorts would repectfully disagree. Is sitting by and watching one's family starve to death in the name of subjective moral sanctimony any less horrific than killing an animal for food? Many hunt to feed their families. Maybe in your suburban bubble this is an utterly foreign concept or you are of the halcyon opinion that an end to world hunger is just around the corner. The fact of the matter is that hunting is a matter of survival for most of mankind.
There can be no debate that hunting and predation are part of the natural order of our planet whether it be done by a human or a wolf or any other creature inhabiting a higher notch on the food chain than its prey. Without such a predatory balance, entire populations of species such as deer will inevitably multiply to the point of exhausting their food supply. If you wish to recreate reality based on whimsical notions best relegated to Dr. Doolittle (maybe you believe deer use condoms in furtherance of family planning objectives), be my guest. Your fantasy will inevitably collapse under the weight of both delusion and hipocrisy as you cause far more damage to the ecological balance than you can ever hope to prevent.
Furthermore, your argument that hunting should be abolished cannot be sustained based either on Darwinian theory or widely practiced theological doctrines. Evolution teaches that the overriding principle by which our ecosphere progresses is survival of the fittest. Animals that once likely utilized man as a source of food have now had the tables turned as our species adapted and overcame. Evolution demands that we both retain and take advantage of our supremacy on the food chain. As for religious doctrine, both Judeo-Christan and Muslim theology teaches that God gave man dominion over the earth and its creatures (often referred to as the "cultural mandate"). While a sense of stewardship is explicit in man's dominion, he is by no means precluded from drawing sustenance therefrom (I limit myself to these religious traditions because it is not feasible to conduct a more exhaustive survey of world theology in relation to hunting and they serve well enough to illustrate my point).
And Talk about an ego. Your profession of abhorring "suffering in any and all forms" earns you the Mother Teresa of Calcutta prize for dramatic license. Have you ever eaten a living creature? Have you ever swatted a fly? If you have, I must refer you to the myriad blogs dealing with the death penalty on this site. It's time to come clean and turn yourself in as the murderous consumptionist beast that you are. The bottomline is that your sole justification for your purely subjective views regarding the social utility of hunting is exactly that -- YOUR purely subjective views regarding the social utility of hunting. Anyone who disagrees is automatically a child of a lesser god, bereft of any semblance of humanity and condemned to walk the earth in trogloditic rage.
Finally, for the record, I have made it clear that I do not support the kind of gratuitous, irresponsible hunting that was described by his Torchishness. Any attempt on your part to associate me with such loathesome conduct is beyond intellectually dishonest and betrays a terminal inability to engage in rational discourse on an issue to which I am genuinely sympathetic.
I would say that this would end the conversation, but I know better. Those astral travellers such as yourself who emanate from a constellation consecrated to ending all forms of animal, vegetable and mineral suffering can never compromise the values they feel impelled to force on their fellow man. Live long and prosper, Hans.
The Lord of Whatever
Thanks for your good wishes. Yes, I do prosper and fully expect to prosper. You are incorrect on so many issues that I do not have the time or patience to respond. You still miss the point of moral equivalency and I fear are "unteachable." Ironically, by stating that some portions of the world continue to hunt for sustenance. you unwittingly make my point for me - as societies evolve, they no longer need to rape, plunder. or steal wives and labor from neighboring tribes. Their social system evolves. So do their social and moral value systems. We obviously are at differing points on the evolutionary bell curve. That's just the way of the world.
How about this Bob?
Why not let hunter's bait the halls of Trenton and Congress with pay to play money and contributor gifts to get those hefty do good politicians out so hunters could take down and possibly wound creatures a lot more dangerous to mankind?
When did we become such an unforgiving people?...sob
I'm gonna do a rare thing
Defend Torch. I have expressed my reservations about his opinions in the past. However, even if this story is made up Torch has a point. Hunting is not a sport. I will repeat this hunting is not a sport. A sport can be defind as fair competition, hunting is a one-sided contest. I have heard the argument that it takes skill to track an animal, this is true, but killing it with a gun takes little or none. Now let me make this point clear=I support the rights of hunters and I am not a vegetarian. In fact I applaud those that hunt and eat the animal, in fact hunted food is far better for you than the processed, hormone induced, store-boaght food we consume normally. However, those who hunt to satisy a lust for killing, those who hunt for the sheer joy of ending an animal's life and those who ham-handidly hunt causing unnecessary suffering, those who hunt for trophey's and those who hunt leaving the animal wounded, and those who do not eat what they have killed have no respect for life, have no respect for nature, and I question whether or not they have a conscience. I would hope that we could have evolved to the point where we find suffering in defensless animals (such as deer) to be appauling, to a point where we respect nature and wildlife. But Torch makes an excellent point hunting has all too often be substitued for genuine acts of "manliness" as if killing something makes you a man.
Deer hunting
Mr. Torricelli is an astute observer of the pathological killers who refer to themselves “sportsmen” and “conservationists”, “harvesting” thousands of wild animals, doing their civic duty by killing every animal in sight. What they are intentionally doing is insuring that herd numbers provide an adequate herd size for their next year’s hunt. How they manage to aim their weapons at all, while waving that American flag with such exaggerated vigor is a mystery. But it would explain their hunting accidents, at least the ones that are reported. Because not only are hunters killing wildlife, they’re wounding and killing each other. There is nothing ethical or moral about killing for pleasure. Hunting is a moral and intelligence issue (or lack thereof). As hunting infiltrates more suburban areas, safety is an issue more than ever, putting residents and their pets at risk. Now they want to involve children in their “sport”, which is based on violence, and the total lack of regard for an animal to live its life. True sport is about competition on a level playing field. Blasting an animal that has been baited, with a high powered rifle or with a bow, from a blind, dressed in camouflage is hardly fair or “sportsmanlike”. Apparently, only true “Americans” and “patriots” are those dressed in camouflage licking an animal’s blood off their fingers. Tell me, do you masturbate to pass the time up in those stands awaiting your prey? The bigger the weapon, the smaller the “tool.”

TORRICELLI ON DEER HUNTING
For anyone who thinks that hunted food is safer, please understand the following:
Chronic wasting disease, a deadly deer illness related to "mad cow," has been discovered in many states. Meat from one of the infected New York deer was fed to people at a fire department fund-raiser before any test results were complete. The meat was finally inspected only because the man who donated the deer thought it looked ill.
Typically, deer meat is NOT even inspected. Just because a butcher is an approved USDA butcher -- that has nothing to do with his ability to test. It only means that his facility is clean enough.
And, venison can be pesticide and herbicide laden.
An article on Ted Nugent's site said, "Some hunters too squeamish to eat their kill are donating the venison to pantries for the homeless."
Infectious prions have been found in deer "meat." In other words, the proteins which cause chronic wasting disease have been discovered in deer muscle -- the part of the animal that is eaten. They had been thought to be only in nervous-system tissue, including brain, spinal and lymph tissues.
A person who eats venison could swallow the proteins shown to cause the deadly brain disease.
Health officials have long reassured hunters they would not be exposed to the disease as long as they did not touch or eat those parts. However, this is quite a breakthrough in research.
Chronic wasting disease, a fatal form of brain degeneration, has been spreading among wild deer in for at least a decade.
The time between a person's exposure to an aberrant prion and the first sign of symptoms is often more than a decade. So just because people don't get ill immediately means nothing.
How Do You Test For CWD? The only sure and practical way to diagnose CWD is through microscopic examination of the brain stem of a deer or elk. Recently, research indicated that using ELISA testing on lymph nodes appears reliable as a screening method for the disease. However, immunohistochemistry testing of obex portion of brain stem remains the most reliable and accurate test available.
A test for live animals, involving the removal of tonsils, is currently in experimental and research stages. Testing for CWD is done by federally-approved laboratories; there is no quick test that you or your meat processor can perform to determine if your animal has CWD.
How interesting that some states grant IMMUNITY OF DONORS OF WILD GAME MEAT for free use by a charitable organization from civil or criminal liability arising from an injury or death attributable to the nature, age, condition or packaging of the donated wild game meat if the injury or death is not a result of the gross negligence, recklessness, or intentional misconduct of the donor.
FYI
Survival of the fittest does not apply to inter-species. It is an intra-species theory that states the most desirable qualities of a particular species will be sought out and continued through the natural mating process. Example the "peppered moth." The theory of survival of the fittest does not mean since humans are more "fit" they will prevail over deer. Just to clarify this is not a food chain theory as many many many hunters frequently cite. Just thought that might further the discussion
Dog
Mr. Torricelli, Rather than waste my energy and time debating hunting and the second amendment with liberal wussies, and an ex-politician(and I'm being very kind); I will spend my time and energy telling you please do not let your dog run around the woods uncontrolled and unsupervised, as your dog may kill and/or harm wildlife and livestock. In fact, most farmers see a loose dog as a threat to their stock and will shoot the dog, as they have a right to protect their stock. If you truly love your dog, control your dog.

What a Moron !! This is a guy who infringed the 2nd amendment not knowing that it has nothing to do with hunting. This guy also castrated the CIA. This guy knows less about hunting than he knows about the bill of rights.

we are much more safe eating at taco bell...
in fact... we better require inspections of all the farmers markets and their kitchens...
i hereby suggest a ban on all food... it's the only way to be safe from e coli and other such bacteria...

"Survival of the fittest does not apply to inter-species. It is an intra-species theory that states the most desirable qualities of a particular species..."
actually... that's incorrect... a wolf pack seeks out the weakest / easiest prey... same is true for all predatory animals... so it is most certainly inter-species...

Hunters do not hunt to put food on the table
I am an ex-hunter, gun owner, Christian and registered Independent. I point this out up front because many on this thread seem to miscategorize everyone against hunting as being liberal.
I quit hunting because I no longer enjoyed killing the wildlife that I had come to love. I've experienced enough death and tragedy in my life, and it was no longer acceptable for me to bring any suffering to defenseless animals.
The claim that hunters hunt for food is typical propaganda to justify hunting. It cost a lot more money to go hunting than to the grocery store to put food on the table. All of the hunters I hunted with and know, were trophy hunting. We were looking to bag big bucks with big racks. The food was an incidental, that we would gladly give away.
I also disagree with an earlier justification for hunting made, i.e. if left unchecked the deer population would grow out of control and that they would suffer from starvation and disease. This is just not true. If left unchecked the deer and other game animal populations, like all other animal populations that are not hunted, stabilize to their environment and food supply. In fact, hunting increases the deer population thru compensatory reproduction.
In addition, it is a fact that hunting dramatically increases deer-car accidents. Hunting has a disruptive effect by startling deer and putting them on the run, and wounded deer run without caution into the streets. Erie Insurance Group even states that the amount of deer-vehicle collisions "rose nearly five times on the first day of buck season and doe season". As a result, the Wildlife Agencies that spend millions of dollars to increase the deer population for their hunter constituents, and the hunters themselves are directly responsible for many of the deaths that result from deer-car accidents during hunting season.
Furthermore, I don't think it's a valuable lesson to teach children to kill. Children have a natural empathy toward animals, and being forced to kill them can cause life long psychological problems. Loving nature has nothing to do with killing it. As Paul Watson, an ex Sierra Club board member said: "You can't love or respect nature with a gun."
Since some on this thread want to frame hunting as a partisan debate, I would suggest that you read Matthew Scully's book, " Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy." Mr. Scully served until recently as special assistant and deputy director of speechwriting to U.S. President George W. Bush.
Cambridge
Hey Torch, Cambridge called. Luckily the statute of limitations is up.
Actually Survival of the fittest
See Herbert Spencer's book Principles of Biology
The weak "prey" would not be considered a desirable mate to other "prey" that is the theory. Trust me I am right on this this is not liberal academic brainwashing it is the true scientific theory understood as Survival of the fittest. The "prey" that was eaten by wolves is not considered "fit" therefor his genes will not be passed to the next generation of "prey". Furthermore, even if you were correct (and by no means are you, you sre completely wrong) would it be such a major accomplishment if a human claimed to be more "fit" than a deer? I can rest easy knowing that I am more fit than a wild animal and I have never shot one. I will never shoot one, and will always understand that I am am a more eveolved being. As I have stated I do not want hunting to be illegal, but the arguments that natural deer populations will not naturally regulate their population (yes if too many deer exist in a particular area and they exhaust their food sources many will die and decrease the population-this is natural allbeit sad), that hunting is a bonding expirience that is unparralled, that the thrill is unmatched is simply bogus. If an individual wishes to eat rabbit or deer or whatever and they wish to hunt to obtain it that is their right, but those who revel in the suffering and the death of the animal are simply cruel. Furthermore, hunting to hang an animals head on a wall is by far the most grotesque behavior that any hunter can exhibit. Do you really need evidence that you killed something, is it normal to want to surround yourself with carcasses, do you need an example that screams "I AM THE MAN THE SLAYED THIS BEAST (Of course by beast i mean a herbavore that does not have a means of fighting back)"That is not a sport, it is not thrilling, it is not sane, that is sociopathic.
looooooooooooool
thanks Sjblue...
i honeslty haven't laughed this hard reading a blog post in quite some time...
you're right... the reason weak animals of a herd / pack don't mate is because the rest aren't necrophiliacs...
and this
"would it be such a major accomplishment if a human claimed to be more "fit" than a deer"
loooooooooool... is a pride of lions more fit than a gazelle?? is a pack of wolves more fit than a moose??
your logic is so far from anything i've ever seen or heard....
i hereby propose a bill to outlaw putting pancakes on a rabbit's head...

End my misery
Bobby, end my misery and go away! No one wants your opinion on anything. You are an example of what we are trying to get rid of in New Jersey, corrupt representatives who think that the office is their's to rob the hard working people of New Jersey. The hunter you describe might be fat, and look like a slob, but I bet he never took a bribe, or a kickback! Go away and allow us to try and rebuild the reputation of this state.
"The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything."
--Theodore Roosevelt--
Jeff
Your poor understanding of the theory aside I will try to explain this again. The reason why it is called survival of the fittest is this. A deer that is eaten by a wolf is less "fit" that a deer that escapes the wolf, thus the surviving deer will be able to reproduce continuing his genes in the gene pool ( do you see how in this senario the "fittest" survived?). The deer that survives the wolf attack is "fittest" because he had traits that enabled him to escape. THe deer that was eaten did not posses the traits that would enable escape, thus he is not as "fit" as the escaped deer. I am not making this up. Your argument "Is a lion more fit than a deer" is irrelevant. You can state that in combat a lion has the advantadge and "higher" place in the food chain, thus the lion will have the natural ability to kill and eat a deer, but it is comparing apples and oranges. Even the weakest lion is born with claws and teeth that give the animal the natural ability to kill and eat a strong deer-because he occupies a higher level on the food chain (IE Antelope eat grass-Lion's eat antelope-and no that does not make antelope more fit than grass). However that strong deer is more "fit" compared to other deer and the weak lion is less fit than a stronger lion. Look at it this way. If there were two lions a big, strong lion and a small weak lion and both were chasing after 1 deer. The big strong lion is more "fit" and would thus likely get the deer, eat it and survive. The weak lion will have trouble getting food and it is unlikely that he will survive long. THus the fittest lion survives. I really hope that you are able to get this now.I am not making this up. I am sorry if you are a hunter that has used this theory before to justify why you have the authority to kill an animal, and now you see the holes in your logic. I am also sorry if you are unable to comprehend the simple explination of survival of the fittest (Again, I support humane and competant hunting). Nevertheless I am glad you got a good laugh, you what they say ignorance is bliss.
