The conventional wisdom among Monmouth County Republicans seems to be that Assemblyman Sean Kean has an edge over Assemblyman Steven Corodemus if both decide to seek the State Senate seat that becomes open in 2007 when Joseph Palaia retires. That feeling, Republican insiders say, is based on a recent trend of Republican County Committee from the 11th district supporting candidates backed by Kean -- and not Corodemus -- for Freeholder and County Chairman. Corodemus, who is more conservative than his running mate (and somewhat bitter rival), could skip the convention route and challenge Kean in the Republican primary. Democrats made a huge play for the 11th district Assembly seats in 2005, but fell a little short. They are expected to take another shot at picking up legislative seats in Monmouth County, and there chances could be buoyed by a divisive contest for the Senate.

I still think Kean's (heavily populated/heavily Republican) Wall Twp. base gives him a slight edge over Corodemus (whose base is in the Atlantic Highlands, a far smaller more a less Republican town). Plus Kean was the top vote-getter in the last election. I'm not even sure that most Republicans play much attention to endorsements (especially when both Assemblymen have legislative records to either advertise or defend).

Poljunkie, I believe you're a tad off the reservation. Both Steve & Sean are tremendous legislators, but all you need to look at are the county committee numbers to realize that they tilt in Sean's favor. Instead of disputing that fact with any semblance of hard evidence, you decide to attack several members of the Republican party in Monmouth. The people you attack, like them or not, have done more then their fair share to keep Monmouth a Republican county. A day or two after the GOP elects a new chairman, you decide to attack your fellow Republicans. Grow up & get a life!

Reyes, while I appreciate your points, what makes you think I'm a Republican? Nonetheless, should there be a Corodemus/Kean primary, the Dems will have an easy time picking up seats in the 11th district. That's my point. Perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to anger.

Being a Republican and also someone who is VERY involved in politics, I do respect both Corodemus and Kean. Each has a very different style and personality, and while Steve is the more experienced legislator, I think Sean's age and more moderate approach to issues works in his favor. Generally, there is a trend in Monmouth County toward younger and more progressive politicians, and this will resonate with the Republicans in this Senate 2007 race and might also resonate with some unaffiliated/undecided voters. What is also interesting here is that Sean used to be a Democrat years ago. His moderate stances on issues might win him some crossover votes. He is a Republican, yet wrote an article in The Herald supporting legislation to raise the minimum wage. Traditionally, Republicans support business, so clearly, this was somewhat of a departure from the party ideology. The point here is that some Democrats might also find him appealing. And there is no doubt that Wall Township is a tremendous powerbase to have, just by the numbers! Wall Republicans are a very active, vocal and strong group.(not to mention some of the male Republican leaders there are among the most handsome I've seen) If Corodemus wants to win, he needs to not take for granted that his experience and years of service will guarantee him the victory. He will need to go back to basic campaign strategies and make himself as visible as Sean does in both print and in person. Personality counts for a lot in politics.

Sean kean may is a nice guy but he is an ex-lobbyist old boy network empty suit of a legislator.
Steve is everything Sean is not. A really sharp guy who does not use politics to enrich himself and is willing to take on anyone who does.

Hello insidejob61,
Steve is a terrific legislator, no doubt. I was just in his office this morning discussing women's business issues. He is very willing to stand for what he believes will be in the best interest of those he serves. It will be a incredibly hard-fought primary, I am sure. I had the honor of testifying a few weeks ago in front of the Assembly Republican Policy Committee. Steve is the chair of that committee. I respect the work he is doing on behalf of business owners in the state, and I am confident that his committee can develop policies which ultimately reduce the costs of owning a business here in the State of N.J. I am only pointing out
that with recent trends, sometimes the people with more "substance" actually loose to those with more showy personalities due to the perceptions they are able to create. It becomes about "buzz." It is dangerous for anyone who has been in office long-term to not recognize that and make adjustments in their campaign to fit the situation. To not do so would be poor strategy, regardless of how wonderful someone is. I certainly wish Steve all the luck there is Thanks for responding. I will see you in the trenches, so to speak!!
