VAN DREW & ALBANO OPPOSE GAS TAX INCREASE
(CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NJ)-- Assemblymen Jeff Van Drew and Nelson Albano stated today that they are opposed to raising the gas tax federally or on the state level. Currently the Governor feels it will cost $7 billion dollars to repair New Jersey’s bridges. Van Drew and Albano feel that this funding is desperately needed for the safety of our residents but that the funding should be the result of cuts in Trenton and Washington and not by increasing the gas tax.
“Raising the gasoline tax is not the solution. We have the second lowest gas tax in the nation and we need to keep it that way. Any gas tax is particularly unfair to South Jersey because we are suburban and rural, we rely upon our vehicles to a much greater degree then does urban, northern New Jersey,” said Van Drew. “The new proposal to raise the federal gas tax is bad idea. We spend billions upon billions of dollars overseas helping other countries while our people are being taxed out of house and home. It is totally unacceptable. We need the federal government to do as they have in the past, spend money restoring the infrastructure that president Dwight Eisenhower envisioned back in the 1950’s, a of system of bridges and roads that would be unparallel to anywhere in the world.”
“After speaking with constituents throughout my term I know that a gas tax is not something they want. We can’t keep relying on our taxpayers to foot the bill for everything and the Federal Government should not rely on them to pay even more. Everyone needs to tighten their belt,” said Albano.
