Jefferson Van Drew, the Democratic candidate for State Senate in the first district, is not happy that the AFL-CIO endorsed his opponent, Republican State Senator Nicholas Asselta. Speaking to the Southern New Jersey Central Labor Council -- a pro-Van Drew group run by Camden County Democratic Co-Chairman (and South Jersey AFL-CIO President) Donald Norcross, Van Drew made it clear that if he wins, he'll be sure to remember who was with him and who was not. In context, Van Drew was not as much showing gratitude to the CLC as he was expressing anger with Charlie Wowkanech's union.

Stupid thing to say...
Way to cement their backing of Asselta, if he had just shut up a lot of them would;ve voted 4 him anyway.
First rule of holes....
First rule of holes, when you are in one stop digging. A few days ago I said the union's would not put feet on the street for Asselta. With Van Drew's recent comment, I retract that statement. Funny thing, since Van Dude's been in the legs, he's forgotten alot of things.
Thanks Mr. Jefferson
Its like going up a bee hive and wacking it with a baseball bat. Van Drew will be eating those words on election day...Rule #1 - don't piss off the unions, Rule #2 -Be sure to follow rule #1.
Especially because one of
Especially because one of the reasons Charlie WoWo is so high on Nicky is that he was a good boy when he was denied the AFL-CIO endorsement in 1995 (can you say Lou Magazzu). That and the fact that they go on Nicky's famous junkets together.
Senator Vandrew
Get ready to start saying it!
SJR is right
Have to admit now that Van Drew has insulted them, they wil certainly be putting more money into the campaign for Nick Asselta and will definatly be putting people on the street on Election Day. Van Drew better be careful or he'll turn this race competative. As of right now he still wins, but the GOP will fight to protect Nick's seat if they see an opening.
Now there's a hollow threat
Now there's a hollow threat -- the GOP effectively fighting to protect anything. Especially in Van Drew Country.
That Van Drew is a Pip!
Sounds to me that Van Drew is right now drafting up a tersely worded resolution urging the union to retract their endorsement or he will have another resolution drawn up requesting the Governor to consider increasing their medical co-pays in the next round of contract negotiations.
resurrectingreagan
Indeed. Anything to get his name in the papers.
Van Drew
Has a 100% labor record and is the sponsor of most labor legislation. He has worked with this union after they didn't support him a few years ago and he will work with them when he is a Senator. He is pro labor and has made that clear no matter what labor leadership does.
wow..
And Van Drew is usually good with his words. I honestly still think he'll probably win.
Comment
In context, Van Drew was not as much showing gratitude to the CLC as he was expressing anger with Charlie Wowkanech's union. In context also means those words didn't come out of his mouth someone just took it that way.
Van Drew is another
Democrat who thinks labor should just rubber stamp his endorsement. Get a grip. You wouldn't be in public office if not for organized labor.
Van Drew
Van Drew is a stuffed suit. If he maintains the same sensationalist reactionary attitude in the Senate that he has in the Assembly he'll be exposed quickly and he'll have no shot against Lobiondo in 08. Van Drew looks the part and talks the part Organized Labor wants to make sure he acts the part, I won't hold my breath.
Van Drew just doesn't get it
I guess Jeff Van Drew doesn't get that he needs to work for
the endorsement of labor. Saying the right things at some
press conference doesn't help the average working man.
Van Drew might as well drop out now because he just woke
up a sleeping giant. He isn't owed anything by the hardworking
members of any local...I guess they didn't teach that in dentist
school.
Van Drew, Asselta - Nothing Special
Whether it's Van Who or Asselta, we're screwed either way. Either one will kiss Corzine's butt. Yes New Jersey Taxpayers, Governor Corzine has come up with two ridiculous proposals to raise the gas tax again on NJ taxpayers as well as the tolls AFTER the election. Also, forget about a tax rebate next year. It won't happen because the state is looking at another huge budget deficit. The governor and legislature will stick it to us again for sure. We strongly urge you to overwhelm the governor and your representatives with e-mails, letters and phone calls to stop these ridiculous proposals and future actions. Tell the members of the senate and assembly that their jobs are on the line unless they cut the pork from the budget and stop these future actions. All they are good for as election time grows closer is to point fingers. It's time for us to take action and kick them out of office. It only takes a few minutes to send an e-mail, letter or make a couple phone calls. Spread the word to your NJ friends over the internet and at work, and demand change. Make your voice heard. They'll be looking for your vote come election time. < Web site addresses: Governor Corzine http://www.state.nj.us/ < NJ Legislators http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/members/legsearch.asp < njcitizensagainst00@yahoo.com
Labor endorsement
Once again for those of you that are saying Van Drew hasn't done anything for Labor-- He is the Prime sponsor of every important Labor bill we have. He pushes them through committee and gets them done. He doesn't just vote for the bill in Committee or on the floor-- he puts his name on it. Also did anyone notice in this story that Van Drew himself didn't make this statement--it was hearsay.
CMCELEPHANT?????
It appears as though CMCELEPHANT jumps to the defense of Jeff Van Drew no matter what...they have posted 3 out of 17 posts and all have been very positive about the Assemblyman. Perhaps Jeff and his team need to take some lessons on astroturfing :-) If this is what his team is worried about doing they are sure to lose this election. Politicsnj comment walls are not where you will overturn Asselta's popularity in the district. However, the comment walls of politicsnj are where Jeff can stroke his own ego....I wonder which is more important to him.
Asselta in the fight of his life..
Asselta is in the fight of his life to maintain his seat, Van Drew on the other hand is going to go for higher office sooner then later. I just think it'd be really scummy if Van Drew won and went for Congress in 08' that quickly after winning a competitive seat.
He will go for it in 08
He is all about the Press. However, Washington is a tougher town than Trenton and once he gets there he'll soon learn that he can simply do the dog and pony show in his district. I wish there was a strong primary challange to him.
