The two Assembly seats had been won by the Republicans in 1985.From the West New York home of a Hudson County legend, Christopher Jackman, Silverio "Sal" Vega will announce his candidacy for State Senator in the 33rd district.  Vega, a freshman Assemblyman and the May of West New York, will be joined by the Hudson County Democratic Organization candidates for State Assembly: former Hoboken Councilwoman (and unsuccessful '05 mayoral candidate) Carol Marsh, and Nicole Harrison Garcia, the wife of indicted former Assemblyman and Union City Mayor Rudy Garcia.

The HCDO is backing Vega over Assemblyman Brian Stack, the Mayor of Union City, for the Senate seat currently held by Bernard Kenny, who is not seeking re-election.

Vega has the backing of Kenny, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy, Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise, and Hoboken Mayor David Roberts.  Stack is supported by Congressman Albio Sires and Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner.

The colorful and popular Jackman, a longtime labor leader, was elected to the State Assembly in 1967 -- a member of a freshman class that included Thomas Kean and Robert Littell.  He served as Assembly Speaker from 1978 through 1981, and was elected to the State Senate in 1983, winning the legendary William Vincent Musto's old seat. Jackman was re-elected in 1987, easily defeating Republican Assemblyman Ronald Dario.  In that contest, his running mates, Robert Menendez and Bernie Kenny, won two GOP Assembly seats.  Jackman died in office in January 1991 and was replaced in the Senate by Menendez.

Christy Jackman - what a guy! - he was "Christy" before Whitman.

I had been an aide to Christy when he was an Assemblyman and totally enjoyed every minute of it. His quotes are still great today. I remember one day driving to Trenton in his Olds - he told me NEVER drive an obviously expensive car when you are in public office. His car had EVERYTHING in it, but it was only an Olds. Also, I wasn't too familiar with the traffic on the Nj tpke so, while driving, I asked him "Chris, which is the better lane to drive in?" You gotta know his answer..... OK.... he said: "Jimmy stay in the middle - this way you can go right or left." So, I said "Chris -I gotta nail you down! What's your favorite color?" Thought a minute and said "Plaid!" Honest to God. No wonder he got so far. Would you fantastic Hudson County political trivialists remember Charlie Cole? Toastmaster extraordinaire! And W.C.Fields lookalike. I loved it when he would playfully bellow - "I want NO Corruption in Politics"!.......(that I'm not a part of). Hudson County Democrats - Love 'em or well, Love 'em. Has anyone within the political community ever heard a speech beginning with these words - "AS I look out at this crowd......" I first heard that from Billy Musto - Father of the N.J. Lottery.... Come to think of it. I think Christy might have made a brown suit with a pinkish shirt and Chocolate tie acceptable. Matter of fact, I just remembered. My Father in Law got detained for putting a "Vote for Chris Jackman" sign up in North Bergen somewhere. It never hit the blotter though. We all loved Christy. I just don't know how he would feel about what's going on in W.N.Y now though. Jimmy
