Voters like Corzine, but they love Codey

Fairleigh Dickinson University's The Public Mind

Not wearing a seatbelt and exceeding the speedlimit has not hurt Gov. Jon Corzine's approvals, according to a new Fairleigh Dickinson University poll released this morning. Corzine has a 58%--28% approval rating among New Jersey voters -- up slightly from a March FDU poll.

But Richard Codey, who served as Acting Governor during Corzine's hospitalization, is still the most popular politician in the state: he has a 73%-9% favoribility rating.

"What can you say?" said FDU Prof. Peter Wooley. "People like this guy. If he could sing, he'd be a rock star." Codey had a 66%-19% approval rating for his stint as Governor.

Two-third of New Jersey voters disapprove of proposals to lease the New Jersey Turnpike and the state Lottery.

Codey's numbers: caused by pathetic Republican "leadership"

Codey has good numbers because the Republican Party's so-called "leadership" is so afraid of Codey they refuse to attack or criticize him on anything. Wilson, Lance and DeCroce belong on Codey's payroll -- with Guy Talarico as well. Maybe they already are? This is New Jersey after all. Codey is even farther to the left of Corzine, but Republicans are so afraid of being criticized -- especially Lance -- that they let him get away with anything he wants.

How very close-minded.

Is it so much to acknowledge that a Democrat could possibly do a good job? Being incapable of objectivity is the mark of a close-minded fool. I may be a staunch Democrat, but I'm not afraid to admit when I think a Republican is doing a good job, for example Ass. Bill Baroni, Sen. Diane B. Allen, and on the national stage Gov. Jon M. Huntmsan, Gov. Linda Lingle, Sen. John Warner, Sen. Olympia J. Snowe, Sen. Richard G. Lugar, Sen. Susan M. Collins, Sen. Chuck Hagel, Sen. Lindsey Graham, Rep. Mark S. Kirk, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, Rep. Christopher Shays, Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Rep. Judy Biggert, and Rep. Walter Jones. And by the way, don't waste your breath--some of them would seem liberal gay-loving zygote-hating godless heathens to a right-of-Atilla-the-Hun choleric reactionary who hates all constitutional amendments except the Second and sometimes the Tenth, but from where I'm sitting, as a radical Marxist hippie junkie tree-hugging homosexual abortionist, they seem to be dignified, intelligent, effective, mainstream moderate-conservatives.

Dick Codey is a man of integrity. He is modest, effective, and a mensch (do you know what that means? A human being). As much as I love Gov. Corzine, I think Dick Codey would be an even better governor. As a suburban husband and father, he comes with perspective congruent with the experience of most New Jerseyans, myself included. He truly is a citizen-lawmaker, and a classy one at that.

Codey '13?

Codey was born in '46, so in '13 when Corzine's done, he'll be 67. Not exactly a spring chicken, but he could definitely run for Governor. I'm sure that would be a multi-way primary (Andrews, Corzine's Lt Gov), but with his name recognition, its possible.

Codey for Senate

I'd rather see him in the Gov mansion but how fitting to take Corzines old gig - Codey is a man of integrity regardless of if its sincere or just for show. He knew he had the respect of the public so he could easly sell an agenda standing up for the citizens of NJ.

ALL ABOUT DICK

Everybody loves the backup QB.  He comes in and throws a couple of TDs and all the fans want to make a switch.  Trust me, Codey is much more Neil O'Donnell than Tom Brady.  The only reason people are enamored with Senator Dick is that he has his self-efacing man of the people act down and, more importantly, they don't know what he has done to our state.  Codey is one of the chief architects of the urban welfare state (don't forget, his district used to include much of urban Essex County, into which he flushed millions of tax dollars with no accountability) and champion of the Abbott reapportionment scheme (at least before he took his act to the burbs via redistricting).  If Jerseyites were made aware that the giant sucking sound they hear in the wallets is directly attributable to Senator Codey, they would think differently.  Alas, the NJGOP is hopelessly enamored with Current-Former-Acting-Soon-to-be Ex Governor Codey because he is a hell of a politician and plays the game better than any Republican could ever fathom.

Great Line

LordXenu, I think Dick Codey is great, but this is the line of the day: "Trust me, Codey is much more Neil O'Donnell than Tom Brady."

Bravo!

Codey is a Joke

This is the problem with New Jersey voters. You may want to sit and have a beer with Dick Codey but that should not influence your opinion on his performance. He has been in charge of the Senate while all this corruption and waste has been happening and lets not forget he was Governor and head of the Senate and nothing changed. He is either part of the problem or incompetent, your choice.

;^ )  Regardless of ideological differences, Codey is a genuinely personable guy.  To his credit, he uses his charm to get what he wants when he wants.  He has a steely edge to him when crossed, but he is willing to bend rather than rigidly head into a mutally destructive battle.  Therein lies the secret of his success not only in terms of survival, but ultimately winning.  I have to admit that I learned a lot from butting heads with him in my former life in NJGOP politics.

He's great....

Codey is by far the best governor New Jersey has ever had. Everyone here today has made light of the fact that he is able to accomplish so much, and that he strikes fear into his opponents. He's not a politician, he's a civil servant. He has a great quote that reads, "I want to be an advocate for the people that can not afford to make a political contribution.....or afford to live in a nicely equipped education rich suburb." He is a great man, a great person, and a well respected figure across the board. Look at how lucky we are with this republican leadership we have so ill-fatedly elected to represent the nation. Poverty, welfare, inequalities, these are problems that not only effect our belittled communities of Camden, East Orange, Newark, etc., but every single suburb that we all may inhabit. Those communities hurt our states ratings in education and all we do is suck the life out of the people that live in those communities. We need to follow Codey's quote and be the advocates for those people. Because "those people", include all of us. And Codey includes all of us, like a great leader and a better man.

Hartwyk

Andrew, please name something he has done other than being in charge of the Senate while corruption has run rampant through every branch of government. PLease explain what he has done while 95% of all other States are enjoying surpluses in their budget and we have a black-hole in ours.
PLease explain what he did while Mcgreevey was destoying the governorship, while Peter Harvey convicted nobody, while Wayne Bryant and Sharpe James lived like Kings off the taxpayers dime.

Codey is a regular guy

Codey is the Harry Truman of our generation of politics and that's a good thing. The Republicans are woefully incompetent granted, but Codey's style and personality make him a larger than life political figure. He's authentic. He's a far cry from Florio, Torricelli, McGreevey, Corzine et al who all struggled just to shake hands and chat with the public. There was nothing genuine about any of these past elected officials. None of them liked to campaign with the exception of McGreevey. None of them really have anything in common with people outside of politics. Codey is genuine. He has kids. He shares his problems with the public. He has a real job. He coaches. He is not a political elitist like so many in government today. People acknowledge that and like him for it. People thrive for authenticity and a sense of connection. Codey has it and the rest don't. Codey is a walking testimonial why this state doesn't need a Lieutenant Governor.

Id Vote for Codey

I think Ive established myself as fairly conservative and my name speaks for my opinion of democrats. However, even I would vote for Dick Codey because I think hes a good guy who cares a lot about this state.

"Codey has good numbers because the Republican Party's so-called "leadership" is so afraid of Codey they refuse to attack or criticize him on anything."

I actually dont think thats true, I think they dont criticize him because theres not much to criticize. He does a decent job when he fills in as governor. He unites the state, he doesnt work to benefit himself, and he just generally comes off as likeable governor.

05/08/07 1:55 pm

Not as bad

While I don't think Codey does an overwhelmingly great job with laws he supports I definately like him more then Governor Corzine. He is blue-collar and not loaded with millions and would have been a much better representative for this state then Corzine. And while he catches a huge break because he is a good substitute and has never been majorly tested, he is a very likable and smart man. The reason why the GOP doesn't attack him is because he is respectable and not really the man in charge of the state. If he ran for governor I'm not sure if I'd support him but I'd definately respect him. He does a good job in being a substitute leader, despite some of the shaky things he supports, he makes sure to get out there and be as effective as possible. He was in the office for a very short time, yet he made it a point to borrow the governor's helicopter and fly over flood ravaged areas and push for aid in these areas. I don't care what side your on, that to me is helping the people for a good cause and being a good leader. Kudos to Codey.

Still Waiting

Like I said, there is a difference between someone you personally like and someone who does a good job. Codey has been at the helm while all our troubles have compounded. What has he done, to thwart corruption, provide manufacturing jobs in Camden, Newark, and Edison so desperatley needed, control property taxes in the under-funded suburbs. I probably would like to have a beer and watch a college ball-game with him too, but he has done nothing to fix the problems ailing this State.

05/08/07 2:12 pm

You don't get it.

People VOTE for people they like.

Period.

Codey is a likeable character in a sea of awful elected officials.

He isn't running for sainthood. All politics by nature is corrupt in both parties.

The standard for electability in NJ is very low.

05/08/07 4:59 pm

The person is important

"What has he done, to thwart corruption, provide manufacturing jobs..." its not like Whitman or McGreedy did a lot...and so far, Corzine hasnt done enough either. So if no governor is going to address the important issues, id rather at least have one I like personally. Codey is a good man, I only wish he could serve a real term because I want him to be remembered in New Jersey as the type of governor to look up to. It seems to me like this McGreevey legacy will never end.

Codey for Lieutenant Governor in 2009

The first occupant of any office has the opportunity to define it for the future.    Senator Codey has demonstrated his ability to lead the State, both as a loyal caretaker and as the person actually in charge.  These would be the characteristics that we should want a lieutenant governor to have.  Let the first occupant of the new office be someone whom the people of the State are confident can do the job, and not just someone selected for ticket-balancing purposes.
