The age issue doesn't go away.
New Jersey voters approve 42 – 34% of the job U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg is doing, but say 46 – 36% that he does not deserve to be reelected next year.
According to a Quinnipiac Poll released today, Lautenberg is too old to effectively serve another six years, voters say 54 – 40%. Republicans say 62 – 30% that Lautenberg is too old, a feeling shared by independent voters 55 – 42%. Democrats split 47 – 48% on the subject.
By a narrow 39 – 36% margin, voters prefer Lautenberg over an unnamed Republican challenger, according to Quinnipiac.
"New Jersey voters put a premium on effectiveness and we expect that they will apply that standard to his reelection next year," said Steve DeMicco, chief consultant to the Lautenberg campaign, who particularly highlighted what the poll describes as the senator's lead "over an unnamed opponent."
Voters approve 40 – 14% of the job U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie is doing, but voters say 30 – 24%, with 46% undecided, that they would not like Christie, a Republican, to run for the U.S. Senate next year. Voters say 31 – 22%, with 47% undecided, that they would not like him to run for Governor in 2009.
"U.S. Attorney Chris Christie gets good marks from voters for his corruption fighter role in New Jersey, but that does not seem to translate into political power as voters say they are not particularly enthusiastic about him running for either the U.S. Senate next year or for Governor the year after," Quinnipiac pollster Clay Richards said.
"The poll shows that Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who many voters say is too old to run for another term, would be vulnerable to a strong Republican candidate next year," he added.
From September 18 – 23, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,230 New Jersey voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.

Money
Money is all that matters. That is what separated Menendez from Kean, Jr.
In the end, will Lautenberg raise enough to overwhelm his opponent? I suspect not.
The next question is, will he write himself a check to self fund?
That is Frank's big dilemma. He said he will not but in the end, that is the only way he stays in and wins.
The pressure will be intense (both DSCC and from Corzine) toward the end of this year after the next filing deadline for him to self-fund.
This Race will be in play if Lautenberg does not have enough cash.
THe GOP
has no one that could contend with FL
How much is?
Senator-to-be Rob Andrews salivating over these numbers! Seriously if the GOP does not make an effort to defeat Lautenberg they are assuring themselves remaining a joke in the national party. There is no reason why a Senator with these numbers should EVER be re-elected.
GOP bench
I tend to agree with you,SJBlue, but I wonder if a well-funded Estabrook can use her money to make age an issue that sticks.
I also agree with Machiavelli though in that if Lautenberg has enough COH--15 to 20M then he simply outspends her running on his record. I think this race comes down to $$.
The issue for the GOP has been they just don't have the cash. She can change all of that.
This pre-supposes that she can win a primary without having to spend alot of her nest egg.
I think that the DSCC is going to weigh this factor, look at their own polling of Lautenberg and make a decision toward the end of this year.
I would not be surprised if we start to hear Pallone's name thrown around given his impressive fundraising numbers.
LOL Pallone
He already had a chance to run for this seat and passed it up.
Fossil Frank
Fossil Frank would be nearly 90 if was re-elected. Don't you think he looks a bit ridiculous at his age not to retire? Is he this pathetic? Move aside Fossil Frank.
Riverkeeper
As usual it comes down to money-however the DSCC will not lose NJ, and they cannot dump Frank. $$ wont matter so much considering that Eastabrook would be a relative no name running in 08 against a popular anti-bush institution that has plenty of cash. If on the off chance that FL gets bumped, it will not be Pallone. Pallone is an impressive fundraiser, but he has never had to spend any money on his races. Furthermore, the State Dems dont think that Pallone is Senate material. I would look to Andrews or Rothman first.
THe GOP
As long as they have a brain and LIVE IN NJ not Senator Dementia.
I think I've been telling you this all along but now others are getting it.
Just look at the face in the article today,
He's in NEVER NEVER NEVERLAND.
"I'm With Fred"
he could die on Election Day and it wouldn't matter
With the lame field on the GOP side, it's irrelevant how old he is. Neither of these candidates is going to lay a hand on the crypt keeper.
Republican Hypocrisy Writ Large...
I wonder how many of the misguided people posting here publicly called for Strom Thurmond to retire with this kind of ugly vehemence?
If Frank Lautenberg is, for any reason, not up to the job next year he won't be foolish enough to run.
I had a chance to see him work the media for about an hour straight at Menendez's victory party last November.
Lautenberg was hopping around the media platform like a Bantam Rooster while smartly addressing all their questions off the top of his head; Frank Lautenberg has more "marbles" left than most of his critics started out with.
Further, most of Lautenberg's detractors here probably voted for the clueless inarticulate incurious and incredibly pedestrian (at best) Bush Jr. Can you imagine the WH resident spending an hour with the real press (not the tame /lame WH captives...except for the great, an old, Helen Thomas ;-) with no script and no prep.
Come on people, cut the crapola. You wanna criticize Frank? Be my guest, but do it on policy...not ad hominem garbage.
