If Ortiz loses, blame Unanue

Rob Ortiz was widely viewed as a rising star in New Jersey politics in June 2007 when the political newcomer won 57% of the vote in his bid for Bergen County GOP Chairman after Guy Talarico stepped down one year early.  The 35-year-old lawyer was a fundraiser for Rudy Giuliani – at the time the front runner for the Republican presidential nomination – and Bergen Republicans, down on Talarico and anxious to restore their former days of glory, saw Ortiz as a bright light for their future.  But one year later, Ortiz is the underdog as he fights to win his first full two-year term as BCRO Chairman.

If Ortiz loses, one of the reasons may be his friend/client, Andy Unanue, the New Yorker/Coloradan who briefly entered the race for United States Senator in April.  Ortiz expended considerable political capital to secure endorsements for Unanue, whose campaign was a disaster.

Blame Rudy

Had Rudy gotten the presidential nod this whole thing might be a different ballgame, but when you make a sole endorsement and use BCRO as Rudy HQ and he left the race - that just started the Ortiz pick them wrong run.

Blame Ortiz

Rob was given the position of Bergen Chairman because he promised hope money and complete loyalty and unity. The people who started his campaign last year lost faith. Then the entire Bergen establishment in County Committee had enough. Its sad, Now a Chimp with a banana could win County Chair

Blame County Committee

Yeah, and that chimp with a banana is Bob Yudin...

Voting for Yudin would be insane, he will bankrupt the organization and take the BCRO back to the stone age. If county committee actually want someone who can win elections, they need to pick someone who can fundraise.

06/16/08 11:53 am

when you cant win attack the voters ?

not a very smart tactic putting blame on County Committee. Not very smart putting islamic militants like Hescham Mahmud on county committee either. What's next are you going to blame the mailman

Ortiz Fundraising Doesnt Add up

Ortiz has not raised anything like Joe Ferriero or even Jimmy Sheehan raised. Moreover, unlike previous chairmen with poor business skills, Yudin is a longtime business owner who has to balance his books constantly. I think the organization will flourish with a committed chairmen like him.

It would be a different ballgame

It would be a different ballgame if Rudy had won the nomination, because Ortiz would have jumped ship by now for a national position and no longer be a BCRO candidate.

no patience for liars and race baiters

You posters are clueless. BCRO as rudy HQ - Lie.

Did Rudy volunteers use facility. Yes. So did Romney volunteers and McCain Volunteers. All 3 candidates supplied their own labor and paid their own freight.

Ortiz unlaterally gave Rudy line - Lie Rudy is only candidate that asked for slogan and is only one who was eligible to use it. Still, rather than unlaterally decide, Ortiz polled distict chairs who all agreed to give Rudy line. At the time, Rudy was polling at about 60% in NJ. His support of Rudy hurt Ortiz so much that he's on McCain's finance committee.

Muslim on county committee - you are a reprehensible person. From accusing anyone who doesn't support Yudin of being anti-semitic to now criticizing someone who stepped up to serve on county committee just because of their religion. You make me sick

what does selling appliances or managing books have to do with leading a poitical organization. if he want to be treasurer just say so. He clearly doesn't have what it takes to be the leader.

You folks have also lied about how much money Bob has raised in the past, and how much was spent by BCRO on last year's county race relative to prior years.

The latest lie making the rounds is about what happened in terms of the voting eligibility decision. Contrary to what the Yudinistas are saying, Ortiz did not change any rules, the issue was that this rule was never properly set. What did Ortiz do...he included everybody, just as Yudin had demanded. How that can be spun as taking advantage i'll never know.

You folks can't win on facts or merit so you misrepresent and attack. People like you are part of the problem, not part of the solution

Patty D

Each side will say the other is spinning but Patty D'Costanza said that night, only those who voted on Tuesday will vote again. I'd assume she is correct.

Here is a simple question:

Who has raised more money? Ortiz or Yudin?

06/16/08 3:07 pm

Ortiz Put

06/16/08 3:09 pm

Hard to Say

As Chairman Rob certianly his numbers will be high in that position, I think the true test would be to see what Bob raises in his first 10 months as Chair. As a donor to local and county campaigns probably Yudin, Rob might have the edge in National fundraising. It's an apples and orange situation.

Great Write Up

Ortiz V. Yudin & the Bergen County republican chairman's race June 16th, 2008 Much to our amazement here at the Consortium, there are actually two men competing to head the train wreck commonly referred to as the Bergen County Republican Organization. The vote is tomorrow night. It is important to note before we go any further that the organization is barely Republican and is hardly organized. The two candidates are current chairman Rob Ortiz from Ridgewood and challenger Bob Yudin from Wyckoff. Rob Ortiz came out of nowhere about ten months ago. To our knowledge, Rob Ortiz was largely an un-known entity to those who were active on County Committee . He was some big money man for George W. Bush. He was the flavor of the month for the establishment folks. Party Crashers as we call them. The same ones who supported Estabrook, then Unanue and currently Zimmer for Senate. Since his election Mr. Ortiz has essentially written the book on what not to do if you are elected BCRO chairman. His first lesson was that raising money for a sitting President of the United States and for a bunch of local out of power Republican candidates are two starkly different tasks. Ortiz proceeded to unilaterally put the organizations support behind the now failed presidential bid of Rudy Giuliani. Then there was his personal recruitment and advocacy of the disastrous Andy Unanue for the United States Senate. This recruitment occured after his county committee had voted and put their support behind N.J. State Senator Joe Pennachio. Ortiz even traveled the state and campaigned on Unanue's behalf. These actions screamed of contempt and arrogance for his county committee members. He never appeared to reach out to the rank and file , never attended many functions or club meetings. He showed a lack of interest and desire to forge the personal relationships necessary to be a successful chairman. He remains largely unknown through every fault of his own. We don't know if he was getting bad advice from inexperienced people or he was just too inexperienced himself to know any better. Mr. Ortiz alienated himself from the organization and failed to build a solid base of support at the grassroots level. Bob Yudin has worked the County Committee organization for years and is very well known throughout the Bergen County Republican Organization. As a candidate for Bergen County Freeholder he has earned the trust and respect of the rank and file members the old fashioned way- through hard work. One main difference between Yudin and Ortiz is motivational. Yudin wants the chairmanship to improve and strengthen the Republican Party in Bergen County. Mr. Ortiz wants to improve and strengthen his own lot. He put his ego ahead of the organization and in the words of Vice President Dick Cheney, he got burned "Big Time". from The Conservative Consortium

you can't help yourself can you vin

first, i note that you didn't respond to my earlier post identifying your numerous misrepresentations. I'll take that as an admission.

You then go on to lie again about Yudin's fundraising. He has had 3 shots at a county wide race and his fundraising numbers in those years are pathetic. Most of the money he did raise came from people he has since alienated or were "loans" from himself.

He can't raise as much money as Ortiz. period. Next question.

No one will give him money because they have no confidence that he can run a winning election. People, no matter how republican, won't throw their money a way on a likely loser.

Ortiz at least brings hope for a better future. Yudin is a throwback to an inglorious past.

06/16/08 3:38 pm

Blame Caramico , Brenner and yes the mailman

Why the poor mailman,? because some folks on County Committee got 5-6 mailings from Ortiz today. Wow more money spent by him in the Chairmans race than  he spent on Woi and Frank last year. its all about me. says the Chairman ooops sorry, Patti Di says he is not the chairman unless he wins.

06/16/08 3:41 pm

There were 2 pieces of mail

and Patti is incorrect. So are you.

PS - The Yudin endorsement from Paul D is incorrect too. Paul says BCRO spent less on county race last year than in any of previous 25 years. WRONGO.

Check ELEC before you publish dudes. BCRO spent more on county race last year than in '06, 05 & '04.

you guys like making stuff up, don't you.

06/16/08 3:57 pm

Yudin and Ortiz

It's a downright tragedy what has become of the BCRO.

As the Democrats run through Bergen County like the Huns across the crumbling Roman Empire, Republicans have a choice between dumb & dumber.

Additionally, you have failed, out-of-county politicos like Kevin O'Toole who had to spend $300K to beat Todd Calguire while Paul DiGaetano thinks his miserable gubernatorial campaign is some monument to change. All he's doing is keeping his hat in the ring anticipating a much different District 36 come reapportionment!

Ortiz has had no success and his taking credit for the Hipp win in Rutherford is almost laughable. Had Ortiz had any political sense he would have fully funded Mike Guarino in the state senate race and at the worst picked up an assembly seat there.

At the same time, Bob Yudin is one of these political amateurs who thinks having a seventy town strategy is how Republicans win again. He actually thinks the GOP can win in 37 versus building upon what little success you've had in 39 & 40.

What makes this all the more amusing is that the Bergen GOP has alienated the one guy who could actually help them politically which is Scott Garrett. Ironically, he is winning the district in lopsided fashions outside of Bergen while Republicans in the county still think "he's too conservative."

In Ortiz, you have a guy in bed with Trump, Xanadu and EnCap. How can he possibly lead when he's unable or unwilling to take on obvious winning issues?

But Yudin is the localized version of Jack Kemp thinking Republicans could win in Harlem if they had a message!

This race is a disaster and I can't quite figure out who will put the final nail in the BCRO coffin.

Vote Column "A" - All the way!

Its quite obvious you have never read the hate mail from this individual in the Record. Another kool aid drinker

Yudin Will Build

And You can bet that Republicans in the county's southern part will be re-awakened by his chairmanship. The four Democratic Assemblypeople representing Southwest Bergen ought to worry next year.
