Look for Elizabeth Democrats to claim the Assembly seat currently held by Neil Cohen, possibly sending the first minority legislator from this heavily Democratic Union County district. Possible candidates include: Union County Freeholder Chairman Angel Estrada, City Councilmen Frank Cuesta, Many Grova, Nelson Gonzalez, Carlos Cedeño, and William Gallman; City Councilwoman Patricia Perkins-Auguste; and Annette Quijano, an Assistant Counsel to Goveror Jon Corzine.
Cohen, who is expected to resign amidst an investigation to his possession of child pornography on his office computer, began his political career with Union Township as his political base. He had served as a Freeholder and Democratic County Chairman before winning an Assembly seat in a Republican district in 1989. He lost his bid for re-election in 1991, and then moved to Roselle, where he was able to return to the Legislature two years later from a district that strongly favored Democrats.
Despite a large African-American and Hispanic population in the 20th, the district has always sent white men to the Legislature. Raymond Lesniak holds the Senate seat and Joseph Cryan is the other Assemblyman.
